1 Now the days|strong="H3117" of David|strong="H1732" drew nigh|strong="H7126" that he should die|strong="H4191"; and he charged|strong="H6680" Solomon|strong="H8010" his son|strong="H1121", saying|strong="H0559",
2 I go|strong="H1980" the way|strong="H1870" of all the earth|strong="H0776": be thou strong|strong="H2388" therefore, and shew thyself a man|strong="H0376";
3 And keep|strong="H8104" the charge|strong="H4931" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* thy God|strong="H0430", to walk|strong="H3212" in his ways|strong="H1870", to keep|strong="H8104" his statutes|strong="H2708", and his commandments|strong="H4687", and his judgments|strong="H4941", and his testimonies|strong="H5715", as it is written|strong="H3789" in the law|strong="H8451" of Moses|strong="H4872", that thou mayest prosper|strong="H7919" in all that thou doest|strong="H6213", and whithersoever thou turnest|strong="H6437" thyself:
4 That the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* may continue|strong="H6965" his word|strong="H1697" which he spake|strong="H1696" concerning me, saying|strong="H0559", If thy children|strong="H1121" take heed|strong="H8104" to their way|strong="H1870", to walk|strong="H3212" before|strong="H6440" me in truth|strong="H0571" with all their heart|strong="H3824" and with all their soul|strong="H5315", there shall not fail|strong="H3772" thee (said|strong="H0559" he) a man|strong="H0376" on the throne|strong="H3678" of Israel|strong="H3478".
5 Moreover thou knowest|strong="H3045" also what Joab|strong="H3097" the son|strong="H1121" of Zeruiah|strong="H6870" did|strong="H6213" to me, and what he did|strong="H6213" to the two|strong="H8147" captains|strong="H8269" of the hosts|strong="H6635" of Israel|strong="H3478", unto Abner|strong="H0074" the son|strong="H1121" of Ner|strong="H5369", and unto Amasa|strong="H6021" the son|strong="H1121" of Jether|strong="H3500", whom he slew|strong="H2026", and shed|strong="H7760" the blood|strong="H1818" of war|strong="H4421" in peace|strong="H7965", and put|strong="H5414" the blood|strong="H1818" of war|strong="H4421" upon his girdle|strong="H2290" that was about his loins|strong="H4975", and in his shoes|strong="H5275" that were on his feet|strong="H7272".
6 Do|strong="H6213" therefore according to thy wisdom|strong="H2451", and let not his hoar head|strong="H7872" go down|strong="H3381" to the grave|strong="H7585" in peace|strong="H7965".
7 But shew|strong="H6213" kindness|strong="H2617" unto the sons|strong="H1121" of Barzillai|strong="H1271" the Gileadite|strong="H1569", and let them be of those that eat|strong="H0398" at thy table|strong="H7979": for so they came|strong="H7126" to me when I fled|strong="H1272" because|strong="H6440" of Absalom|strong="H0053" thy brother|strong="H0251".
8 And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei|strong="H8096" the son|strong="H1121" of Gera|strong="H1617", a Benjamite|strong="H1145" of Bahurim|strong="H0980", which cursed|strong="H7043" me with a grievous|strong="H4834" curse|strong="H7045" in the day|strong="H3117" when I went|strong="H3212" to Mahanaim|strong="H4266": but he came down|strong="H3381" to meet|strong="H7125" me at Jordan|strong="H3383", and I sware|strong="H7650" to him by the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, saying|strong="H0559", I will not put thee to death|strong="H4191" with the sword|strong="H2719".
9 Now therefore hold him not guiltless|strong="H5352": for thou art a wise|strong="H2450" man|strong="H0376", and knowest|strong="H3045" what thou oughtest to do|strong="H6213" unto him; but his hoar head|strong="H7872" bring thou down|strong="H3381" to the grave|strong="H7585" with blood|strong="H1818".
10 So David|strong="H1732" slept|strong="H7901" with his fathers|strong="H0001", and was buried|strong="H6912" in the city|strong="H5892" of David|strong="H1732".
11 And the days|strong="H3117" that David|strong="H1732" reigned|strong="H4427" over Israel|strong="H3478" were forty|strong="H0705" years|strong="H8141": seven|strong="H7651" years|strong="H8141" reigned|strong="H4427" he in Hebron|strong="H2275", and thirty|strong="H7970" and three|strong="H7969" years|strong="H8141" reigned|strong="H4427" he in Jerusalem|strong="H3389".
12 Then sat|strong="H3427" Solomon|strong="H8010" upon the throne|strong="H3678" of David|strong="H1732" his father|strong="H0001"; and his kingdom|strong="H4438" was established|strong="H3559" greatly|strong="H3966".
13 And Adonijah|strong="H0138" the son|strong="H1121" of Haggith|strong="H2294" came|strong="H0935" to Bath-sheba|strong="H1339" the mother|strong="H0517" of Solomon|strong="H8010". And she said|strong="H0559", Comest|strong="H0935" thou peaceably|strong="H7965"? And he said|strong="H0559", Peaceably|strong="H7965".
14 He said|strong="H0559" moreover, I have somewhat to say|strong="H1697" unto thee. And she said|strong="H0559", Say on|strong="H1696".
15 And he said|strong="H0559", Thou knowest|strong="H3045" that the kingdom|strong="H4410" was mine, and that all Israel|strong="H3478" set|strong="H7760" their faces|strong="H6440" on me, that I should reign|strong="H4427": howbeit the kingdom|strong="H4410" is turned about|strong="H5437", and is become my brother’s|strong="H0251": for it was his from the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.
16 And now I ask|strong="H7592" one|strong="H0259" petition|strong="H7596" of thee, deny|strong="H7725" me|strong="H6440" not. And she said|strong="H0559" unto him, Say on|strong="H1696".
17 And he said|strong="H0559", Speak|strong="H0559", I pray thee, unto Solomon|strong="H8010" the king|strong="H4428", (for he will not say|strong="H7725" thee|strong="H6440" nay|strong="H7725",) that he give|strong="H5414" me Abishag|strong="H0049" the Shunammite|strong="H7767" to wife|strong="H0802".
18 And Bath-sheba|strong="H1339" said|strong="H0559", Well|strong="H2896"; I will speak|strong="H1696" for thee unto the king|strong="H4428".
19 Bath-sheba|strong="H1339" therefore went|strong="H0935" unto king|strong="H4428" Solomon|strong="H8010", to speak|strong="H1696" unto him for Adonijah|strong="H0138". And the king|strong="H4428" rose up|strong="H6965" to meet|strong="H7125" her, and bowed|strong="H7812" himself unto her, and sat down|strong="H3427" on his throne|strong="H3678", and caused a seat|strong="H3678" to be set|strong="H7760" for the king’s|strong="H4428" mother|strong="H0517"; and she sat|strong="H3427" on his right hand|strong="H3225".
20 Then she said|strong="H0559", I desire|strong="H7592" one|strong="H0259" small|strong="H6996" petition|strong="H7596" of thee; I pray thee, say|strong="H7725" me|strong="H6440" not nay|strong="H7725". And the king|strong="H4428" said|strong="H0559" unto her, Ask on|strong="H7592", my mother|strong="H0517": for I will not say|strong="H7725" thee|strong="H6440" nay|strong="H7725".
21 And she said|strong="H0559", Let Abishag|strong="H0049" the Shunammite|strong="H7767" be given|strong="H5414" to Adonijah|strong="H0138" thy brother|strong="H0251" to wife|strong="H0802".
22 And king|strong="H4428" Solomon|strong="H8010" answered|strong="H6030" and said|strong="H0559" unto his mother|strong="H0517", And why dost thou ask|strong="H7592" Abishag|strong="H0049" the Shunammite|strong="H7767" for Adonijah|strong="H0138"? ask|strong="H7592" for him the kingdom|strong="H4410" also; for he is mine elder|strong="H1419" brother|strong="H0251"; even for him, and for Abiathar|strong="H0054" the priest|strong="H3548", and for Joab|strong="H3097" the son|strong="H1121" of Zeruiah|strong="H6870".
23 Then king|strong="H4428" Solomon|strong="H8010" sware|strong="H7650" by the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, saying|strong="H0559", God|strong="H0430" do|strong="H6213" so to me, and more also|strong="H3254", if Adonijah|strong="H0138" have not spoken|strong="H1696" this word|strong="H1697" against his own life|strong="H5315".
24 Now therefore, as the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* liveth|strong="H2416", which hath established|strong="H3559" me, and set|strong="H3427" me on the throne|strong="H3678" of David|strong="H1732" my father|strong="H0001", and who hath made|strong="H6213" me an house|strong="H1004", as he promised|strong="H1696", Adonijah|strong="H0138" shall be put to death|strong="H4191" this day|strong="H3117".
25 And king|strong="H4428" Solomon|strong="H8010" sent|strong="H7971" by the hand|strong="H3027" of Benaiah|strong="H1141" the son|strong="H1121" of Jehoiada|strong="H3077"; and he fell|strong="H6293" upon him that he died|strong="H4191".
26 And unto Abiathar|strong="H0054" the priest|strong="H3548" said|strong="H0559" the king|strong="H4428", Get|strong="H3212" thee to Anathoth|strong="H6068", unto thine own fields|strong="H7704"; for thou art worthy|strong="H0376" of death|strong="H4194": but I will not at this time|strong="H3117" put thee to death|strong="H4191", because thou barest|strong="H5375" the ark|strong="H0727" of the Lord|strong="H0136" \+w GOD|strong="H3069"\+w* before|strong="H6440" David|strong="H1732" my father|strong="H0001", and because thou hast been afflicted|strong="H6031" in all wherein my father|strong="H0001" was afflicted|strong="H6031".
27 So Solomon|strong="H8010" thrust out|strong="H1644" Abiathar|strong="H0054" from being priest|strong="H3548" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*; that he might fulfil|strong="H4390" the word|strong="H1697" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, which he spake|strong="H1696" concerning the house|strong="H1004" of Eli|strong="H5941" in Shiloh|strong="H7887".
28 Then tidings|strong="H8052" came|strong="H0935" to Joab|strong="H3097": for Joab|strong="H3097" had turned|strong="H5186" after|strong="H0310" Adonijah|strong="H0138", though he turned|strong="H5186" not after|strong="H0310" Absalom|strong="H0053". And Joab|strong="H3097" fled|strong="H5127" unto the tabernacle|strong="H0168" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and caught hold|strong="H2388" on the horns|strong="H7161" of the altar|strong="H4196".
29 And it was told|strong="H5046" king|strong="H4428" Solomon|strong="H8010" that Joab|strong="H3097" was fled|strong="H5127" unto the tabernacle|strong="H0168" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*; and, behold, he is by|strong="H0681" the altar|strong="H4196". Then Solomon|strong="H8010" sent|strong="H7971" Benaiah|strong="H1141" the son|strong="H1121" of Jehoiada|strong="H3077", saying|strong="H0559", Go|strong="H3212", fall|strong="H6293" upon him.
30 And Benaiah|strong="H1141" came|strong="H0935" to the tabernacle|strong="H0168" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and said|strong="H0559" unto him, Thus saith|strong="H0559" the king|strong="H4428", Come forth|strong="H3318". And he said|strong="H0559", Nay; but I will die|strong="H4191" here. And Benaiah|strong="H1141" brought|strong="H7725" the king|strong="H4428" word|strong="H1697" again|strong="H7725", saying|strong="H0559", Thus said|strong="H1696" Joab|strong="H3097", and thus he answered|strong="H6030" me.
31 And the king|strong="H4428" said|strong="H0559" unto him, Do|strong="H6213" as he hath said|strong="H1696", and fall|strong="H6293" upon him, and bury|strong="H6912" him; that thou mayest take away|strong="H5493" the innocent|strong="H2600" blood|strong="H1818", which Joab|strong="H3097" shed|strong="H8210", from me, and from the house|strong="H1004" of my father|strong="H0001".
32 And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* shall return|strong="H7725" his blood|strong="H1818" upon his own head|strong="H7218", who fell|strong="H6293" upon two|strong="H8147" men|strong="H0582" more righteous|strong="H6662" and better|strong="H2896" than he, and slew|strong="H2026" them with the sword|strong="H2719", my father|strong="H0001" David|strong="H1732" not knowing|strong="H3045" thereof, to wit, Abner|strong="H0074" the son|strong="H1121" of Ner|strong="H5369", captain|strong="H8269" of the host|strong="H6635" of Israel|strong="H3478", and Amasa|strong="H6021" the son|strong="H1121" of Jether|strong="H3500", captain|strong="H8269" of the host|strong="H6635" of Judah|strong="H3063".
33 Their blood|strong="H1818" shall therefore return|strong="H7725" upon the head|strong="H7218" of Joab|strong="H3097", and upon the head|strong="H7218" of his seed|strong="H2233" for ever|strong="H5769": but upon David|strong="H1732", and upon his seed|strong="H2233", and upon his house|strong="H1004", and upon his throne|strong="H3678", shall there be peace|strong="H7965" for|strong="H5704" ever|strong="H5769" from the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.
34 So Benaiah|strong="H1141" the son|strong="H1121" of Jehoiada|strong="H3077" went up|strong="H5927", and fell|strong="H6293" upon him, and slew|strong="H4191" him: and he was buried|strong="H6912" in his own house|strong="H1004" in the wilderness|strong="H4057".
35 And the king|strong="H4428" put|strong="H5414" Benaiah|strong="H1141" the son|strong="H1121" of Jehoiada|strong="H3077" in his room over the host|strong="H6635": and Zadok|strong="H6659" the priest|strong="H3548" did the king|strong="H4428" put|strong="H5414" in the room of Abiathar|strong="H0054".
36 And the king|strong="H4428" sent|strong="H7971" and called|strong="H7121" for Shimei|strong="H8096", and said|strong="H0559" unto him, Build|strong="H1129" thee an house|strong="H1004" in Jerusalem|strong="H3389", and dwell|strong="H3427" there, and go not forth|strong="H3318" thence any whither|strong="H0575".
37 For it shall be, that on the day|strong="H3117" thou goest out|strong="H3318", and passest over|strong="H5674" the brook|strong="H5158" Kidron|strong="H6939", thou shalt know|strong="H3045" for certain|strong="H3045" that thou shalt surely|strong="H4191" die|strong="H4191": thy blood|strong="H1818" shall be upon thine own head|strong="H7218".
38 And Shimei|strong="H8096" said|strong="H0559" unto the king|strong="H4428", The saying|strong="H1697" is good|strong="H2896": as my lord|strong="H0113" the king|strong="H4428" hath said|strong="H1696", so will thy servant|strong="H5650" do|strong="H6213". And Shimei|strong="H8096" dwelt|strong="H3427" in Jerusalem|strong="H3389" many|strong="H7227" days|strong="H3117".
39 And it came to pass at the end|strong="H7093" of three|strong="H7969" years|strong="H8141", that two|strong="H8147" of the servants|strong="H5650" of Shimei|strong="H8096" ran away|strong="H1272" unto Achish|strong="H0397" son|strong="H1121" of Maachah|strong="H4601" king|strong="H4428" of Gath|strong="H1661". And they told|strong="H5046" Shimei|strong="H8096", saying|strong="H0559", Behold, thy servants|strong="H5650" be in Gath|strong="H1661".
40 And Shimei|strong="H8096" arose|strong="H6965", and saddled|strong="H2280" his ass|strong="H2543", and went|strong="H3212" to Gath|strong="H1661" to Achish|strong="H0397" to seek|strong="H1245" his servants|strong="H5650": and Shimei|strong="H8096" went|strong="H3212", and brought|strong="H0935" his servants|strong="H5650" from Gath|strong="H1661".
41 And it was told|strong="H5046" Solomon|strong="H8010" that Shimei|strong="H8096" had gone|strong="H1980" from Jerusalem|strong="H3389" to Gath|strong="H1661", and was come again|strong="H7725".
42 And the king|strong="H4428" sent|strong="H7971" and called|strong="H7121" for Shimei|strong="H8096", and said|strong="H0559" unto him, Did I not make thee to swear|strong="H7650" by the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and protested|strong="H5749" unto thee, saying|strong="H0559", Know|strong="H3045" for a certain|strong="H3045", on the day|strong="H3117" thou goest out|strong="H3318", and walkest|strong="H1980" abroad any whither|strong="H0575", that thou shalt surely|strong="H4191" die|strong="H4191"? and thou saidst|strong="H0559" unto me, The word|strong="H1697" that I have heard|strong="H8085" is good|strong="H2896".
43 Why then hast thou not kept|strong="H8104" the oath|strong="H7621" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and the commandment|strong="H4687" that I have charged|strong="H6680" thee with?
44 The king|strong="H4428" said|strong="H0559" moreover to Shimei|strong="H8096", Thou knowest|strong="H3045" all the wickedness|strong="H7451" which thine heart|strong="H3824" is privy to|strong="H3045", that thou didst|strong="H6213" to David|strong="H1732" my father|strong="H0001": therefore the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* shall return|strong="H7725" thy wickedness|strong="H7451" upon thine own head|strong="H7218";
45 And king|strong="H4428" Solomon|strong="H8010" shall be blessed|strong="H1288", and the throne|strong="H3678" of David|strong="H1732" shall be established|strong="H3559" before|strong="H6440" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* for|strong="H5704" ever|strong="H5769".
46 So the king|strong="H4428" commanded|strong="H6680" Benaiah|strong="H1141" the son|strong="H1121" of Jehoiada|strong="H3077"; which went out|strong="H3318", and fell|strong="H6293" upon him, that he died|strong="H4191". And the kingdom|strong="H4467" was established|strong="H3559" in the hand|strong="H3027" of Solomon|strong="H8010".
