1 And it came to pass after many|strong="H7227" days|strong="H3117", that the word|strong="H1697" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* came to Elijah|strong="H0452" in the third|strong="H7992" year|strong="H8141", saying|strong="H0559", Go|strong="H3212", shew|strong="H7200" thyself unto Ahab|strong="H0256"; and I will send|strong="H5414" rain|strong="H4306" upon|strong="H6440" the earth|strong="H0127".
2 And Elijah|strong="H0452" went|strong="H3212" to shew|strong="H7200" himself unto Ahab|strong="H0256". And there was a sore|strong="H2389" famine|strong="H7458" in Samaria|strong="H8111".
3 And Ahab|strong="H0256" called|strong="H7121" Obadiah|strong="H5662", which was the governor of his house|strong="H1004". (Now Obadiah|strong="H5662" feared|strong="H3373" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* greatly|strong="H3966":
4 For it was so, when Jezebel|strong="H0348" cut off|strong="H3772" the prophets|strong="H5030" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, that Obadiah|strong="H5662" took|strong="H3947" an hundred|strong="H3967" prophets|strong="H5030", and hid|strong="H2244" them by fifty|strong="H0376" in a cave|strong="H4631", and fed|strong="H3557" them with bread|strong="H3899" and water|strong="H4325".)
5 And Ahab|strong="H0256" said|strong="H0559" unto Obadiah|strong="H5662", Go|strong="H3212" into the land|strong="H0776", unto all fountains|strong="H4599" of water|strong="H4325", and unto all brooks|strong="H5158": peradventure|strong="H0194" we may find|strong="H4672" grass|strong="H2682" to save|strong="H2421" the horses|strong="H5483" and mules|strong="H6505" alive|strong="H2421", that we lose|strong="H3772" not all the beasts|strong="H0929".
6 So they divided|strong="H2505" the land|strong="H0776" between them to pass throughout|strong="H5674" it: Ahab|strong="H0256" went|strong="H1980" one|strong="H0259" way|strong="H1870" by himself, and Obadiah|strong="H5662" went|strong="H1980" another|strong="H0259" way|strong="H1870" by himself.
7 And as Obadiah|strong="H5662" was in the way|strong="H1870", behold, Elijah|strong="H0452" met|strong="H7125" him: and he knew|strong="H5234" him, and fell|strong="H5307" on his face|strong="H6440", and said|strong="H0559", Art thou that my lord|strong="H0113" Elijah|strong="H0452"?
8 And he answered|strong="H0559" him, I am: go|strong="H3212", tell|strong="H0559" thy lord|strong="H0113", Behold, Elijah|strong="H0452" is here.
9 And he said|strong="H0559", What have I sinned|strong="H2398", that thou wouldest deliver|strong="H5414" thy servant|strong="H5650" into the hand|strong="H3027" of Ahab|strong="H0256", to slay|strong="H4191" me?
10 As the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* thy God|strong="H0430" liveth|strong="H2416", there is no|strong="H3426" nation|strong="H1471" or kingdom|strong="H4467", whither|strong="H0834" my lord|strong="H0113" hath not sent|strong="H7971" to seek|strong="H1245" thee: and when they said|strong="H0559", He is not there; he took an oath|strong="H7650" of the kingdom|strong="H4467" and nation|strong="H1471", that they found|strong="H4672" thee not.
11 And now thou sayest|strong="H0559", Go|strong="H3212", tell|strong="H0559" thy lord|strong="H0113", Behold, Elijah|strong="H0452" is here.
12 And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone|strong="H3212" from thee, that the Spirit|strong="H7307" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* shall carry|strong="H5375" thee whither I know|strong="H3045" not; and so when I come|strong="H0935" and tell|strong="H5046" Ahab|strong="H0256", and he cannot find|strong="H4672" thee, he shall slay|strong="H2026" me: but I thy servant|strong="H5650" fear|strong="H3372" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* from my youth|strong="H5271".
13 Was it not told|strong="H5046" my lord|strong="H0113" what I did|strong="H6213" when Jezebel|strong="H0348" slew|strong="H2026" the prophets|strong="H5030" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, how I hid|strong="H2244" an hundred|strong="H3967" men|strong="H0376" of the \+w LORD’s|strong="H3068"\+w* prophets|strong="H5030" by fifty|strong="H2572" in a cave|strong="H4631", and fed|strong="H3557" them with bread|strong="H3899" and water|strong="H4325"?
14 And now thou sayest|strong="H0559", Go|strong="H3212", tell|strong="H0559" thy lord|strong="H0113", Behold, Elijah|strong="H0452" is here: and he shall slay|strong="H2026" me.
15 And Elijah|strong="H0452" said|strong="H0559", As the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* of hosts|strong="H6635" liveth|strong="H2416", before|strong="H6440" whom I stand|strong="H5975", I will surely shew|strong="H7200" myself unto him to day|strong="H3117".
16 So Obadiah|strong="H5662" went|strong="H3212" to meet|strong="H7125" Ahab|strong="H0256", and told|strong="H5046" him: and Ahab|strong="H0256" went|strong="H3212" to meet|strong="H7125" Elijah|strong="H0452".
17 And it came to pass, when Ahab|strong="H0256" saw|strong="H7200" Elijah|strong="H0452", that Ahab|strong="H0256" said|strong="H0559" unto him, Art thou he that troubleth|strong="H5916" Israel|strong="H3478"?
18 And he answered|strong="H0559", I have not troubled|strong="H5916" Israel|strong="H3478"; but thou, and thy father’s|strong="H0001" house|strong="H1004", in that ye have forsaken|strong="H5800" the commandments|strong="H4687" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and thou hast followed|strong="H3212" Baalim|strong="H1168".
19 Now therefore send|strong="H7971", and gather|strong="H6908" to me all Israel|strong="H3478" unto mount|strong="H2022" Carmel|strong="H3760", and the prophets|strong="H5030" of Baal|strong="H1168" four|strong="H0702" hundred|strong="H3967" and fifty|strong="H2572", and the prophets|strong="H5030" of the groves|strong="H0842" four|strong="H0702" hundred|strong="H3967", which eat|strong="H0398" at Jezebel’s|strong="H0348" table|strong="H7979".
20 So Ahab|strong="H0256" sent|strong="H7971" unto all the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478", and gathered|strong="H6908" the prophets|strong="H5030" together|strong="H6908" unto mount|strong="H2022" Carmel|strong="H3760".
21 And Elijah|strong="H0452" came|strong="H5066" unto all the people|strong="H5971", and said|strong="H0559", How long|strong="H5921" halt|strong="H6452" ye between two|strong="H8147" opinions|strong="H5587"? if the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* be God|strong="H0430", follow him: but if Baal|strong="H1168", then follow|strong="H3212" him. And the people|strong="H5971" answered|strong="H6030" him not a word|strong="H1697".
22 Then said|strong="H0559" Elijah|strong="H0452" unto the people|strong="H5971", I, even I only, remain|strong="H3498" a prophet|strong="H5030" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*; but Baal’s|strong="H1168" prophets|strong="H5030" are four|strong="H0702" hundred|strong="H3967" and fifty|strong="H2572" men|strong="H0376".
23 Let them therefore give|strong="H5414" us two|strong="H8147" bullocks|strong="H6499"; and let them choose|strong="H0977" one|strong="H0259" bullock|strong="H6499" for themselves, and cut it in pieces|strong="H5408", and lay|strong="H7760" it on wood|strong="H6086", and put|strong="H7760" no fire|strong="H0784" under: and I will dress|strong="H6213" the other|strong="H0259" bullock|strong="H6499", and lay|strong="H5414" it on wood|strong="H6086", and put|strong="H7760" no fire|strong="H0784" under:
24 And call|strong="H7121" ye on the name|strong="H8034" of your gods|strong="H0430", and I will call|strong="H7121" on the name|strong="H8034" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*: and the God|strong="H0430" that answereth|strong="H6030" by fire|strong="H0784", let him be God|strong="H0430". And all the people|strong="H5971" answered|strong="H6030" and said|strong="H0559", It is well|strong="H2896" spoken|strong="H1697".
25 And Elijah|strong="H0452" said|strong="H0559" unto the prophets|strong="H5030" of Baal|strong="H1168", Choose|strong="H0977" you one|strong="H0259" bullock|strong="H6499" for yourselves, and dress|strong="H6213" it first|strong="H7223"; for ye are many|strong="H7227"; and call|strong="H7121" on the name|strong="H8034" of your gods|strong="H0430", but put|strong="H7760" no fire|strong="H0784" under.
26 And they took|strong="H3947" the bullock|strong="H6499" which was given|strong="H5414" them, and they dressed|strong="H6213" it, and called|strong="H7121" on the name|strong="H8034" of Baal|strong="H1168" from morning|strong="H1242" even until noon|strong="H6672", saying|strong="H0559", O Baal|strong="H1168", hear|strong="H6030" us. But there was no|strong="H0369" voice|strong="H6963", nor any that answered|strong="H6030". And they leaped|strong="H6452" upon the altar|strong="H4196" which was made|strong="H6213".
27 And it came to pass at noon|strong="H6672", that Elijah|strong="H0452" mocked|strong="H2048" them, and said|strong="H0559", Cry|strong="H7121" aloud|strong="H1419": for he is a god|strong="H0430"; either he is talking|strong="H7879", or he is pursuing|strong="H7873", or he is in a journey|strong="H1870", or peradventure|strong="H0194" he sleepeth|strong="H3463", and must be awaked|strong="H3364".
28 And they cried|strong="H7121" aloud|strong="H6963", and cut|strong="H1413" themselves after their manner|strong="H4941" with knives|strong="H2719" and lancets|strong="H7420", till the blood|strong="H1818" gushed out|strong="H8210" upon them.
29 And it came to pass, when midday|strong="H6672" was past|strong="H5674", and they prophesied|strong="H5012" until the time of the offering|strong="H5927" of the evening sacrifice|strong="H4503", that there was neither voice|strong="H6963", nor any to answer|strong="H6030", nor any that regarded|strong="H7182".
30 And Elijah|strong="H0452" said|strong="H0559" unto all the people|strong="H5971", Come near|strong="H5066" unto me. And all the people|strong="H5971" came near|strong="H5066" unto him. And he repaired|strong="H7495" the altar|strong="H4196" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* that was broken down|strong="H2040".
31 And Elijah|strong="H0452" took|strong="H3947" twelve|strong="H8147" stones|strong="H0068", according to the number|strong="H4557" of the tribes|strong="H7626" of the sons|strong="H1121" of Jacob|strong="H3290", unto whom the word|strong="H1697" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* came, saying|strong="H0559", Israel|strong="H3478" shall be thy name|strong="H8034":
32 And with the stones|strong="H0068" he built|strong="H1129" an altar|strong="H4196" in the name|strong="H8034" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*: and he made|strong="H6213" a trench|strong="H8585" about|strong="H5439" the altar|strong="H4196", as great as would contain|strong="H1004" two measures|strong="H5429" of seed|strong="H2233".
33 And he put|strong="H6186" the wood|strong="H6086" in order|strong="H6186", and cut|strong="H5408" the bullock|strong="H6499" in pieces, and laid|strong="H7760" him on the wood|strong="H6086", and said|strong="H0559", Fill|strong="H4390" four|strong="H0702" barrels|strong="H3537" with water|strong="H4325", and pour|strong="H3332" it on the burnt sacrifice|strong="H5930", and on the wood|strong="H6086".
34 And he said|strong="H0559", Do it the second time|strong="H8138". And they did it the second time|strong="H8138". And he said|strong="H0559", Do it the third time|strong="H8027". And they did it the third time|strong="H8027".
35 And the water|strong="H4325" ran|strong="H3212" round about|strong="H5439" the altar|strong="H4196"; and he filled|strong="H4390" the trench|strong="H8585" also with water|strong="H4325".
36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering|strong="H5927" of the evening sacrifice|strong="H4503", that Elijah|strong="H0452" the prophet|strong="H5030" came near|strong="H5066", and said|strong="H0559", \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* God|strong="H0430" of Abraham|strong="H0085", Isaac|strong="H3327", and of Israel|strong="H3478", let it be known|strong="H3045" this day|strong="H3117" that thou art God|strong="H0430" in Israel|strong="H3478", and that I am thy servant|strong="H5650", and that I have done|strong="H6213" all these things at thy word|strong="H1697".
37 Hear|strong="H6030" me, O \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, hear|strong="H6030" me, that this people|strong="H5971" may know|strong="H3045" that thou art the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* God|strong="H0430", and that thou hast turned|strong="H5437" their heart|strong="H3820" back|strong="H5437" again|strong="H0322".
38 Then the fire|strong="H0784" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* fell|strong="H5307", and consumed|strong="H0398" the burnt sacrifice|strong="H5930", and the wood|strong="H6086", and the stones|strong="H0068", and the dust|strong="H6083", and licked up|strong="H3897" the water|strong="H4325" that was in the trench|strong="H8585".
39 And when all the people|strong="H5971" saw|strong="H7200" it, they fell|strong="H5307" on their faces|strong="H6440": and they said|strong="H0559", The \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, he is the God|strong="H0430"; the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, he is the God|strong="H0430".
40 And Elijah|strong="H0452" said|strong="H0559" unto them, Take|strong="H8610" the prophets|strong="H5030" of Baal|strong="H1168"; let not one|strong="H0376" of them escape|strong="H4422". And they took|strong="H8610" them: and Elijah|strong="H0452" brought them down|strong="H3381" to the brook|strong="H5158" Kishon|strong="H7028", and slew|strong="H7819" them there.
41 And Elijah|strong="H0452" said|strong="H0559" unto Ahab|strong="H0256", Get thee up|strong="H5927", eat|strong="H0398" and drink|strong="H8354"; for there is a sound|strong="H6963" of abundance|strong="H1995" of rain|strong="H1653".
42 So Ahab|strong="H0256" went up|strong="H5927" to eat|strong="H0398" and to drink|strong="H8354". And Elijah|strong="H0452" went up|strong="H5927" to the top|strong="H7218" of Carmel|strong="H3760"; and he cast himself down|strong="H1457" upon the earth|strong="H0776", and put|strong="H7760" his face|strong="H6440" between his knees|strong="H1290",
43 And said|strong="H0559" to his servant|strong="H5288", Go up|strong="H5927" now, look|strong="H5027" toward|strong="H1870" the sea|strong="H3220". And he went up|strong="H5927", and looked|strong="H5027", and said|strong="H0559", There is nothing|strong="H3972". And he said|strong="H0559", Go again|strong="H7725" seven|strong="H7651" times|strong="H6471".
44 And it came to pass at the seventh time|strong="H7637", that he said|strong="H0559", Behold, there ariseth|strong="H5927" a little|strong="H6996" cloud|strong="H5645" out of the sea|strong="H3220", like a man’s|strong="H0376" hand|strong="H3709". And he said|strong="H0559", Go up|strong="H5927", say|strong="H0559" unto Ahab|strong="H0256", Prepare|strong="H0631" thy chariot, and get thee down|strong="H3381", that the rain|strong="H1653" stop|strong="H6113" thee not.
45 And it came to pass in the mean while|strong="H3541", that the heaven|strong="H8064" was black|strong="H6937" with clouds|strong="H5645" and wind|strong="H7307", and there was a great|strong="H1419" rain|strong="H1653". And Ahab|strong="H0256" rode|strong="H7392", and went|strong="H3212" to Jezreel|strong="H3157".
46 And the hand|strong="H3027" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* was on Elijah|strong="H0452"; and he girded up|strong="H8151" his loins|strong="H4975", and ran|strong="H7323" before|strong="H6440" Ahab|strong="H0256" to the entrance|strong="H0935" of Jezreel|strong="H3157".
