1 A faithful saying: if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
1 Este ensinamento é verdadeiro: se alguém quer muito ser bispo na Igreja, está desejando um trabalho excelente.
2 It behoveth therefore a bishop to be blameless, the husband of one wife, sober, prudent, of good behaviour, chaste, given to hospitality, a teacher,
2 O bispo deve ser um homem que ninguém possa culpar de nada. Deve ter somente uma esposa, ser moderado, prudente e simples. Deve estar disposto a hospedar pessoas na sua casa e ter capacidade para ensinar.
3 Not given to wine, no striker, but modest, not quarrelsome, not covetous, but
3 Não pode ser chegado ao vinho nem briguento, mas deve ser pacífico e calmo. Não deve amar o dinheiro.
4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all chastity.
4 Deve ser um bom chefe da sua própria família e saber educar os seus filhos de maneira que eles lhe obedeçam com todo o respeito.
5 But if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?
5 Pois, se alguém não sabe governar a sua própria família, como poderá cuidar da Igreja de Deus?
6 Not a neophyte: lest being puffed up with pride, he fall into the judgment of the devil.
6 O bispo não deve ser alguém convertido há pouco tempo; se for, ele ficará cheio de orgulho e será condenado como o Diabo foi.
7 Moreover he must have a good testimony of them who are without: lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
7 É preciso que o bispo seja respeitado pelos de fora da Igreja, para que não fique desmoralizado e não caia na armadilha do Diabo.
8 Deacons in like manner chaste, not double tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre:
8 Do mesmo modo, os diáconos devem ser homens de palavra e sérios. Não devem beber muito vinho, nem ser gananciosos.
9 Holding the mystery of faith in a pure conscience.
9 Eles devem se apegar à verdade revelada da fé e ter sempre a consciência limpa.
10 And let these also first be proved: and so let them minister, having no crime.
10 Primeiro devem ser provados e depois, se forem aprovados, que sirvam a Igreja.
11 The women in like manner chaste, not slanderers, but sober, faithful in all things.
11 A esposa do diácono também deve ser respeitável e não deve ser faladeira. Ela precisa ser moderada e fiel em tudo.
12 Let deacons be the husbands of one wife: who rule well their children, and their own houses.
12 O diácono deve ter somente uma esposa e ser capaz de governar bem os seus filhos e toda a sua família.
13 For they that have ministered well, shall purchase to themselves a good degree, and much confidence in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
13 Pois os diáconos que fazem um bom trabalho conquistam o respeito dos irmãos na fé e são capazes de falar com coragem sobre a sua fé em Cristo Jesus.
14 These things I write to thee, hoping that I shall come to thee shortly.
14 Escrevo essas coisas a você, esperando ir vê-lo logo.
15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
15 Mas, se eu demorar, esta carta vai lhe dizer como devemos agir na família de Deus, que é a Igreja do Deus vivo, a qual é a coluna e o alicerce da verdade.
16 And evidently great is the mystery of godliness, which was manifested in the flesh, was justified in the spirit, appeared unto angels, hath been preached unto the Gentiles, is believed in the world, is taken up in glory.
