1 For you yourselves know, brethren, that our coming to you was not without fruit.
1 Vocês mesmos sabem, irmãos, que a visita que lhes fizemos não foi inútil.
2 But even after we had suffered before and were spitefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we were bold in our God to speak the gospel of God to you in much conflict.
2 Sabem como fomos maltratados e quanto sofremos em Filipos, antes de chegarmos aí. E, no entanto, com confiança em nosso Deus, anunciamos a vocês as boas-novas de Deus, apesar de grande oposição.
3 For our exhortation did not come from error or uncleanness, nor was it in deceit.
3 Portanto, como veem, não pregamos com a intenção de enganá-los, nem com motivos impuros, nem com artimanhas.
4 But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, who tests our hearts.
4 Em vez disso, falamos como mensageiros aprovados por Deus, aos quais foram confiadas as boas-novas. Nosso propósito não é agradar as pessoas, mas a Deus, que examina as intenções de nosso coração.
5 For neither at any time did we use flattering words, as you know, nor in pretense of covetousness; God is witness.
5 Como bem sabem, nunca tentamos conquistá-los com bajulação, e Deus é nossa testemunha de que não agimos motivados pela ganância.
6 Nor did we seek honor from men, either from you or from others, when we might have been authoritative as apostles of Christ.
6 Quanto ao reconhecimento humano, nunca o buscamos de vocês, nem de nenhum outro.
7 But we were gentle among you, just as a nurse cherishes her own children.
7 Ainda que, como apóstolos de Cristo, tivéssemos o direito de fazer certas exigências, agimos como crianças entre vocês. Ou melhor, fomos como a mãe que alimenta os filhos e deles cuida.
8 So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own souls, because you had become beloved to us.
8 Nós os amamos tanto que compartilhamos com vocês não apenas as boas-novas de Deus, mas também nossa própria vida.
9 For you remember, brethren, our labor and toil; for laboring night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God.
9 Não se lembram, irmãos, de como trabalhamos arduamente entre vocês? Noite e dia nos esforçamos para obter sustento, a fim de não sermos um peso para ninguém enquanto lhes anunciávamos as boas-novas de Deus.
10 You are witnesses, and God also, how holily and uprightly and blamelessly we were among you who believe;
10 Vocês mesmos são nossas testemunhas, e Deus também é, de que fomos dedicados, honestos e irrepreensíveis com todos vocês, os que creem.
11 as you know how we exhorted, and encouraged, and charged every one of you, as a father does his own children,
11 E sabem que tratamos a cada um como um pai trata seus filhos.
12 that you would walk worthily of God who calls you into His kingdom and glory.
12 Aconselhamos, incentivamos e insistimos para que vivam de modo que Deus considere digno, pois ele os chamou para terem parte em seu reino e em sua glória.
13 For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the Word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the Word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.
13 Portanto, nunca deixamos de agradecer a Deus, pois, quando vocês receberam de nós a mensagem dele, não consideraram nossas palavras meras ideias humanas, mas as aceitaram como palavra de Deus, o que sem dúvida são. E essa mensagem continua a atuar em vocês, os que creem.
14 For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Judeans,
14 E então, irmãos, vocês foram perseguidos por seus próprios compatriotas, tornando-se assim imitadores das igrejas de Deus em Cristo Jesus na Judeia, que também sofreram nas mãos de seu próprio povo, os judeus.
15 who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have driven us out; and they do not please God and are contrary to all men,
15 Eles mataram o Senhor Jesus e os profetas, e agora também nos perseguem. Não agradam a Deus e trabalham contra toda a humanidade,
16 forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, so as always to fill up the measure of their sins; but wrath has come upon them to the end.
16 procurando impedir-nos de anunciar a salvação aos gentios. Com isso, continuam a acumular pecados, mas a ira de Deus finalmente os alcançou.
17 But we, brethren, having been taken away from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavored more eagerly, with great desire, to see your face.
17 Irmãos, depois de um breve tempo separados de vocês, embora nosso coração nunca os tenha deixado, esforçamo-nos por voltar a vê-los, pela grande saudade que sentimos.
18 Therefore we wanted to come to you; even I, Paul, time and again; but Satan hindered us.
18 Queríamos muito visitá-los, e eu, Paulo, tentei não apenas uma vez, mas duas; Satanás, porém, nos impediu.
19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming.
19 Afinal, o que nos dá esperança e alegria? E qual será nossa magnífica recompensa e coroa diante do Senhor Jesus quando ele voltar? Serão vocês!
20 For you are our glory and joy.
20 Sim, vocês são nosso orgulho e nossa alegria.
