1 Flies `that dien, leesen the swetnesse of oynement. Litil foli at a tyme is preciousere than wisdom and glorie.
1 Assim como algumas moscas mortas podem estragar um frasco inteiro de perfume, assim também uma pequena tolice pode fazer a sabedoria perder todo o valor.
2 The herte of a wijs man is in his riyt side; and the herte of a fool is in his left side.
2 Para quem é sábio, é muito natural fazer o que é certo, mas para o tolo o natural é fazer o que é errado.
3 But also a fool goynge in the weie, whanne he is vnwijs, gessith alle men foolis.
3 Todos percebem que ele é tolo; até os que não o conhecem notam a sua falta de juízo.
4 If the spirit of hym, that hath power, stieth on thee, forsake thou not thi place; for heeling schal make gretteste synnes to ceesse.
4 Se uma autoridade se zangar com você, não peça demissão; erros sérios podem ser perdoados se você não perder a calma.
5 An yuel is, which Y siy vndur the sunne, and goith out as bi errour fro the face of the prince; a fool set in hiy dignyte,
5 Eu tenho visto neste mundo uma injustiça que é cometida pelos que governam:
6 and riche men sitte bynethe.
6 eles colocam pessoas tolas em altos cargos e deixam de lado pessoas de valor.
7 I siy seruauntis on horsis, and princes as seruauntis goynge on the erthe.
7 Tenho visto escravos andando a cavalo e príncipes andando a pé como se fossem escravos.
8 He that diggith a diche, schal falle in to it; and an eddre schal bite hym, that distrieth an hegge.
8 Quem abre um buraco cairá nele; quem derruba um muro será mordido por uma cobra.
9 He that berith ouer stoonys, schal be turmentid in tho; and he that kittith trees, schal be woundid of tho.
9 Quem arranca pedras será ferido por elas; quem racha lenha acabará se machucando.
10 If yrun is foldid ayen, and this is not as bifore, but is maad blunt, it schal be maad scharp with myche trauel; and wisdom schal sue aftir bisynesse.
10 Se você deixa o machado perder o corte e não o afia, terá de trabalhar muito mais. É mais inteligente planejar antes de agir.
11 If a serpent bitith, it bitith in silence; he that bacbitith priueli, hath no thing lesse than it.
11 Não adianta nada você saber encantar cobras se deixar que uma delas o morda.
12 The wordis of the mouth of a wijs man is grace; and the lippis of an vnwijs man schulen caste hym doun.
12 Quem é sábio recebe elogios pelas coisas que diz, mas o tolo é destruído pelas suas próprias palavras.
13 The bigynnyng of hise wordis is foli; and the laste thing of his mouth is the worste errour.
13 Ele começa dizendo tolices e acaba falando coisas absurdas e más.
14 A fool multiplieth wordis; a man noot, what was bifore hym, and who mai schewe to hym that, that schal come aftir hym?
14 O tolo não para de falar. Ninguém sabe o que vai acontecer amanhã, nem pode dizer o que acontecerá depois da sua morte.
15 The trauel of foolis shal turment hem, that kunnen not go in to the citee.
15 Somente um homem muito tolo, tão tolo, que nem consegue encontrar o caminho de casa, se esgota de tanto trabalhar.
16 Lond, wo to thee, whos kyng is a child, and whose princes eten eerli.
16 Um país vai mal quando aquele que o governa se deixa levar pela opinião dos outros, e quando as autoridades começam a se divertir logo de manhã.
17 Blessid is the lond, whos kyng is noble; and whose princis eten in her tyme, to susteyne the kynde, and not to waste.
17 Mas um país vai bem quando quem o governa toma as suas próprias decisões, e as autoridades sabem se controlar, comem na hora certa e não bebem demais.
18 The hiynesse of housis schal be maad low in slouthis; and the hous schal droppe in the feblenesse of hondis.
18 Se por preguiça você deixar de consertar o telhado da sua casa, ele acabará ficando cheio de goteiras, e a casa cairá.
19 In leiyyng thei disposen breed and wyn, that thei drynkynge ete largeli; and alle thingis obeien to monei.
19 As festas ajudam a gente a se divertir, e o vinho ajuda a gente a se alegrar; mas sem dinheiro não se pode ter nem uma coisa nem outra.
20 In thi thouyt bacbite thou not the kyng, and in the priuete of thi bed, curse thou not a riche man; for the briddis of heuene schulen bere thi vois, and he that hath pennys, schal telle the sentence.
20 Não critique o governo nem mesmo em pensamento e não critique o homem rico nem mesmo dentro do seu próprio quarto, pois um passarinho poderia ir contar a eles o que você disse.
