1 These ben the names of the sones of Israel, that entriden into Egipt with Jacob; alle entriden with her housis;
1 Estes são os nomes dos filhos de Israel que se mudaram para o Egito com Jacó, cada um com sua família:
2 Ruben, Symeon,
2 Rúben, Simeão, Levi, Judá,
3 Leuy, Judas, Isachar, Zabulon, and Benjamin,
3 Issacar, Zebulom, Benjamim,
4 Dan, and Neptalim, Gad, and Aser.
4 Dã, Naftali, Gade e Aser.
5 Therfor alle the soules of hem that yeden out of `the hipe of Jacob weren seuenti and fyue.
5 Ao todo, desceram ao Egito setenta descendentes de Jacó, incluindo José, que já estava lá.
6 Forsothe Joseph was in Egipt; and whanne he was deed, and alle hise brithren, and al his kynrede,
6 Com o tempo, José e seus irmãos morreram, e toda aquela geração chegou ao fim.
7 the sones of Israel encreessiden, and weren multiplied as buriounnyng, and thei weren maad strong greetli, and filliden the lond.
7 Mas seus descendentes, os israelitas, tiveram muitos filhos e netos. Multiplicaram-se tanto que se fortaleceram e encheram a terra.
8 A newe kyng, that knewe not Joseph, roos in the meene tyme on Egipt, and seide to his puple, Lo!
8 Por fim, subiu ao poder no Egito um novo rei, que não sabia coisa alguma sobre José.
9 the puple of the sones of Israel is myche, and strongere than we;
9 O rei disse a seu povo: “Vejam, agora o povo de Israel é mais numeroso e mais forte que nós.
10 come ye, wiseli oppresse we it, lest perauenture it be multiplied; and lest, if batel risith ayens vs, it be addid to oure enemyes, and go out of the lond, whanne we ben ouercomun.
10 Precisamos tramar um plano para evitar que se tornem ainda mais numerosos. Se não o fizermos e houver guerra, eles se unirão a nossos inimigos, lutarão contra nós e depois fugirão desta terra”.
11 And so he made maistris of werkis souereyns to hem, that thei schulden turmente hem with chargis. And thei maden citees of tabernaclis to Farao, Fiton, and Ramesses.
11 Assim, os egípcios nomearam capatazes para dirigir o trabalho do povo. Sob opressão, os israelitas construíram Pitom e Ramessés, duas cidades que serviam de centros de armazenamento para o faraó.
12 And bi hou myche thei oppressiden hem, bi so myche thei weren multiplied, and encreessiden more.
12 Porém, quanto mais eram oprimidos, mais os israelitas se multiplicavam e se espalhavam, e mais preocupados os egípcios ficavam.
13 And Egipcians hatiden the sones of Israel, and turmentiden, and scorneden hem;
13 Por isso, os egípcios os forçavam com crueldade a trabalhar pesado.
14 and brouyten her lijf to bitternesse bi hard werkis of cley and to tijl stoon, and bi al seruage, bi which thei weren oppressid in the werkis of erthe.
14 Tornaram a vida deles amarga, obrigando-os a preparar argamassa, produzir tijolos e fazer todo o trabalho nos campos. Eram cruéis em todas as suas exigências.
15 Forsothe the kyng of Egipt seide to the mydwyues of Ebrews, of whiche oon was clepid Sefora, the tother Fua;
15 O faraó, rei do Egito, deu a seguinte ordem às parteiras hebreias Sifrá e Puá:
16 and he commaundide to hem, Whanne ye schulen do the office of medewyues to Ebrew wymmen, and the tyme of childberyng schal come, if it is a knaue child, sle ye him; if it is a womman, kepe ye.
16 “Quando ajudarem as hebreias a dar à luz, prestem atenção durante o parto. Se for menino, matem o bebê; se for menina, deixem que viva”.
17 Forsothe the medewyues dredden God, and diden not bi the comaundement of the kyng of Egipt, but kepten knaue children.
17 Mas as parteiras temiam a Deus e se recusaram a obedecer à ordem do rei; assim, deixaram os meninos viver.
18 To whiche clepid to hym the kyng seide, What is this thing which ye wolden do, that ye wolden kepe the children?
18 Então o rei do Egito mandou chamar as parteiras e lhes perguntou: “Por que fizeram isso? Por que deixaram os meninos viver?”.
19 Whiche answeriden, Ebrew wymmen ben not as the wymmen of Egipt, for thei han kunnyng of the craft of medewijf, and childen bifore that we comen to hem.
19 “As mulheres hebreias não são como as egípcias”, responderam as parteiras ao faraó. “São mais vigorosas e dão à luz com tanta rapidez que não conseguimos chegar a tempo.”
20 Therfor God dide wel to medewyues; and the puple encreesside, and was coumfortid greetli.
20 Deus foi bondoso com as parteiras, e os israelitas continuaram a multiplicar-se e tornaram-se cada vez mais fortes.
21 And for the mydewyues dredden God, he bildide `housis to hem.
21 E, porque as parteiras temeram a Deus, ele deu a cada uma delas a sua própria família.
22 Therfor Farao comaundide al his puple, and seide, What euer thing of male kynde is borun to Ebrewis, `caste ye into the flood; what euer thing of wymmen kynde, kepe ye.
22 Então o faraó deu a seguinte ordem a todo o seu povo: “Lancem no rio Nilo todos os meninos hebreus recém-nascidos, mas deixem as meninas viver”.
