1 I tretide alle these thingis in myn herte, to vndirstonde diligentli. Iust men, and wise men ben, and her werkis ben in the hond of God; and netheles a man noot, whether he is worthi of loue or of hatrede.
1 Eu pensei bastante, e me esforcei para entender tudo isso, e cheguei à conclusão de que Deus controla o que as pessoas sábias e honestas fazem e até o amor e o ódio delas. Ninguém sabe nada do que vai acontecer no futuro, mas isso não faz diferença.
2 But alle thingis ben kept vncerteyn in to tyme to comynge; for alle thingis bifallen euenli to a iust man and to a wickid man, to a good man and to an yuel man, to a cleene man and to an vnclene man, to a man offrynge offryngis and sacrifices, and to a man dispisynge sacrifices; as a good man, so and a synnere; as a forsworun man, so and he that greetli swerith treuthe.
2 Pois a mesma coisa acontece com os honestos e os desonestos, os bons e os maus, os religiosos e os não religiosos, os que adoram a Deus e os que não adoram. A mesma coisa acontece com quem é bom e com quem é pecador, com a pessoa que faz juramentos e com a que não faz.
3 This thing is the worste among alle thingis, that ben don vndur the sunne, that the same thingis bifallen to alle men; wherfor and the hertis of the sones of men ben fillid with malice and dispisyng in her lijf; and aftir these thingis thei schulen be led doun to hellis.
3 A mesma coisa acontece com todos; e isso é o pior de tudo o que acontece neste mundo. O coração das pessoas está cheio de maldade e de loucura; e, de repente, elas morrem.
4 No man is, that lyueth euere, and that hath trist of this thing; betere is a quik dogge than a deed lioun.
4 Mas, enquanto se vive neste mundo, existe alguma esperança; porque é melhor ser um cão vivo do que um leão morto.
5 For thei that lyuen witen that thei schulen die; but deed men knowen no thing more, nether han meede ferthere; for her mynde is youun to foryetyng.
5 Sim, os vivos sabem que vão morrer, mas os mortos não sabem nada. Eles não vão receber mais nada e estão completamente esquecidos.
6 Also the loue, and hatrede, and enuye perischiden togidere; and thei han no part in this world, and in the werk that is don vndur the sunne.
6 Os seus amores, os seus ódios, as suas paixões, tudo isso morreu com eles. Nunca mais tomarão parte naquilo que acontece neste mundo.
7 Therfor go thou, iust man, and ete thi breed in gladnesse, and drynke thi wiyn with ioie; for thi werkis plesen God.
7 Portanto, vá em frente. Coma com prazer a sua comida e beba alegremente o seu vinho, pois Deus já aceitou com prazer o que você faz.
8 In ech tyme thi clothis be white, and oile faile not fro thin heed.
8 Procure sempre parecer feliz e satisfeito.
9 Vse thou lijf with the wijf which thou louest, in alle the daies of lijf of thin vnstablenesse, that ben youun to thee vndur sunne, in al the tyme of thi vanyte; for this is thi part in thi lijf and trauel, bi which thou trauelist vndur the sunne.
9 Enquanto você viver neste mundo de ilusões, aproveite a vida com a mulher que você ama. Pois isso é tudo o que você vai receber pelos seus trabalhos nesta vida dura que Deus lhe deu.
10 Worche thou bisili, what euer thing thin hond mai do; for nether werk, nether resoun, nethir kunnyng, nether wisdom schulen be at hellis, whidir thou haastist.
10 Tudo o que você tiver de fazer faça o melhor que puder, pois no mundo dos mortos não se faz nada, e ali não existe pensamento, nem conhecimento, nem sabedoria. E é para lá que você vai.
11 I turnede me to another thing, and Y siy vndur sunne, that rennyng is not of swift men, nethir batel is of stronge men, nether breed is of wise men, nether richessis ben of techeris, ne grace is of crafti men; but tyme and hap is in alle thingis.
11 Eu descobri mais outra coisa neste mundo: nem sempre são os corredores mais velozes que ganham as corridas; nem sempre são os soldados mais valentes que ganham as batalhas. Notei ainda que as pessoas mais sábias nem sempre têm o que comer e que as mais inteligentes nem sempre ficam ricas. Notei também que as pessoas mais capazes nem sempre alcançam altas posições. Tudo depende da sorte e da ocasião.
12 A man knowith not his ende; but as fischis ben takun with an hook, and as briddis ben takun with a snare, so men ben takun in yuel tyme, whanne it cometh sudeynli on hem.
12 Pois ninguém sabe quando a hora da desgraça vai chegar. Como aves que caem, de repente, na armadilha ou como peixes apanhados na rede, nós também podemos cair na desgraça quando menos esperamos.
13 Also Y siy this wisdom vndur the sunne, and Y preuede it the mooste.
13 Há mais uma coisa que eu vi e que é um bom exemplo de como neste mundo não se dá valor à sabedoria.
14 A litil citee, and a fewe men ther ynne; a greet kyng cam ayens it, and cumpasside it with palis, and he bildide strengthis bi cumpas; and bisegyng was maad perfit.
14 Havia uma pequena cidade onde morava pouca gente. Com o seu exército, um rei poderoso atacou a cidade, construiu rampas de ataque em redor dela e se preparou para derrubar as suas muralhas.
15 And a pore man and a wijs was foundun ther ynne; and he delyuerede the citee bi his wisdom, and no man bithouyte aftirward on that pore man.
15 Morava ali um homem que era pobre, mas muito inteligente; era tão inteligente, que poderia ter salvado a cidade. Acontece que ninguém lembrou dele.
16 And Y seide, that wisdom is betere than strengthe; hou therfor is the wisdom of a pore man dispisid, and hise wordis ben not herd?
16 Eu sempre achei que a sabedoria é melhor do que a força; mas ninguém acredita que uma pessoa pobre pode ser sábia e ninguém presta atenção no que ela diz.
17 The wordis of wise men ben herd in silence, more than the cry of a prince among foolis.
17 É melhor ouvir as palavras calmas de uma pessoa sábia do que os gritos de um líder numa reunião de tolos.
18 Betere is wisdom than armuris of batel; and he that synneth in o thing, schal leese many goodis.
18 A sabedoria vale mais do que armas de guerra, mas uma decisão errada pode estragar os melhores planos.
