1 I tretide alle these thingis in myn herte, to vndirstonde diligentli. Iust men, and wise men ben, and her werkis ben in the hond of God; and netheles a man noot, whether he is worthi of loue or of hatrede.
1 Porque todas estas coisas considerei no meu coração para poder declarar tudo isto: que os justos, e os sábios, e as suas obras, estão nas mãos de Deus, nenhum homem conhece nem o amor nem o ódio; por tudo o que está diante dele.
2 But alle thingis ben kept vncerteyn in to tyme to comynge; for alle thingis bifallen euenli to a iust man and to a wickid man, to a good man and to an yuel man, to a cleene man and to an vnclene man, to a man offrynge offryngis and sacrifices, and to a man dispisynge sacrifices; as a good man, so and a synnere; as a forsworun man, so and he that greetli swerith treuthe.
2 Todas as coisas sucedem igualmente a todos; o mesmo destino sucede ao justo e ao ímpio, ao bom e ao puro, e também ao impuro; assim como ao que sacrifica e ao que não sacrifica; tanto ao bom como ao pecador; ao que jura e ao que teme o juramento.
3 This thing is the worste among alle thingis, that ben don vndur the sunne, that the same thingis bifallen to alle men; wherfor and the hertis of the sones of men ben fillid with malice and dispisyng in her lijf; and aftir these thingis thei schulen be led doun to hellis.
3 Este é um mal entre todas as coisas que se faz debaixo do sol; que todos estão sujeitos aos mesmos destinos e que também o coração dos filhos dos homens está cheio de maldade, e a loucura habita os seus corações enquanto vivem, e depois eles se vão para os mortos.
4 No man is, that lyueth euere, and that hath trist of this thing; betere is a quik dogge than a deed lioun.
4 Para aquele que está entre os vivos há esperança; porque um cão vivo é melhor do que um leão morto.
5 For thei that lyuen witen that thei schulen die; but deed men knowen no thing more, nether han meede ferthere; for her mynde is youun to foryetyng.
5 Porque os vivos sabem que hão de morrer, mas os mortos não sabem coisa alguma, nem tampouco terão eles alguma recompensa, mas a sua memória é esquecida.
6 Also the loue, and hatrede, and enuye perischiden togidere; and thei han no part in this world, and in the werk that is don vndur the sunne.
6 Também o seu amor, o seu ódio, e a sua inveja já pereceram, e também já não têm parte alguma para sempre, em qualquer coisa do que se faz debaixo do sol.
7 Therfor go thou, iust man, and ete thi breed in gladnesse, and drynke thi wiyn with ioie; for thi werkis plesen God.
7 Segue teu caminho, come o teu pão com alegria e bebe o teu vinho com um coração jubiloso, porque Deus agora aceita as tuas obras.
8 In ech tyme thi clothis be white, and oile faile not fro thin heed.
8 Que as tuas vestes estejam sempre brancas, e nunca falte o unguento sobre a tua cabeça.
9 Vse thou lijf with the wijf which thou louest, in alle the daies of lijf of thin vnstablenesse, that ben youun to thee vndur sunne, in al the tyme of thi vanyte; for this is thi part in thi lijf and trauel, bi which thou trauelist vndur the sunne.
9 Viva alegremente com a esposa que tu amas em todos os dias da vida da tua vaidade, os quais ele te deu debaixo do sol, todos os dias da tua vaidade; porque esta é a tua porção nesta vida, e no teu trabalho, o qual tu realizaste debaixo do sol.
10 Worche thou bisili, what euer thing thin hond mai do; for nether werk, nether resoun, nethir kunnyng, nether wisdom schulen be at hellis, whidir thou haastist.
10 Tudo quanto tua mão encontrar para fazer, faze-o conforme as tuas forças, porque na sepultura, para onde tu vais, não há trabalho, nem projetos, nem conhecimento, nem sabedoria.
11 I turnede me to another thing, and Y siy vndur sunne, that rennyng is not of swift men, nethir batel is of stronge men, nether breed is of wise men, nether richessis ben of techeris, ne grace is of crafti men; but tyme and hap is in alle thingis.
11 Voltei-me, e vi debaixo do sol que a corrida não é para os velozes, e nem para os fortes a batalha, nem tampouco para os sábios o pão, e nem tampouco as riquezas para os homens de entendimento, e nem o favor para os homens de habilidades; mas que o tempo e a oportunidade ocorrem a todos.
12 A man knowith not his ende; but as fischis ben takun with an hook, and as briddis ben takun with a snare, so men ben takun in yuel tyme, whanne it cometh sudeynli on hem.
12 Porque o homem também não sabe o seu tempo; assim como os peixes que são pegos por uma rede maligna, e como os passarinhos que são apanhados em um laço, assim se enlaçam os filhos dos homens no mau tempo, quando cai repentinamente sobre eles.
13 Also Y siy this wisdom vndur the sunne, and Y preuede it the mooste.
13 Esta sabedoria também vi debaixo do sol, e pareceu- me grande:
14 A litil citee, and a fewe men ther ynne; a greet kyng cam ayens it, and cumpasside it with palis, and he bildide strengthis bi cumpas; and bisegyng was maad perfit.
14 Havia uma pequena cidade em que tinha poucos homens, e veio contra ela um grande rei, e a sitiou e construiu contra ela grandes baluartes.
15 And a pore man and a wijs was foundun ther ynne; and he delyuerede the citee bi his wisdom, and no man bithouyte aftirward on that pore man.
15 Ora, encontrou-se nela um homem sábio pobre, que pela sua sabedoria livrou aquela cidade, e mesmo assim ninguém se lembrava daquele pobre homem.
16 And Y seide, that wisdom is betere than strengthe; hou therfor is the wisdom of a pore man dispisid, and hise wordis ben not herd?
16 Então disse eu: A sabedoria é melhor do que a força, no entanto, a sabedoria do pobre é desprezada, e as suas palavras não são ouvidas.
17 The wordis of wise men ben herd in silence, more than the cry of a prince among foolis.
17 As palavras dos homens sábios são ouvidas no silêncio, mais do que o grito daquele que governa entre os tolos.
18 Betere is wisdom than armuris of batel; and he that synneth in o thing, schal leese many goodis.
18 A sabedoria é melhor do que as armas de guerra; porém um só pecador destrói muitos bens.
