1 The wisdom of a man schyneth in his cheer; and the myytieste schal chaunge his face.
1 Quem é como o sábio? Quem sabe interpretar as coisas? A sabedoria de um homem Alcança o favor do rei e muda o seu semblante carregado.
2 I kepe the mouth of the kyng, and the comaundementis and sweryngis of God.
2 Este é o meu conselho: obedeça às ordens do rei porque você fez um juramento diante de Deus.
3 Haste thou not to go awei fro his face, and dwelle thou not in yuel werk. For he schal do al thing, that he wole;
3 Não se apresse em deixar a presença do rei, nem se levante em favor de uma causa errada, pois o rei faz o que bem entende.
4 and his word is ful of power, and no man mai seie to hym, Whi doist thou so?
4 Pois a palavra do rei é soberana, e ninguém lhe pode perguntar: "Que é que estás fazendo? "
5 He that kepith the comaundement of God `in this lijf, schal not feele ony thing of yuel; the herte of a wijs man vndurstondith tyme and answer.
5 Quem obedece às suas ordens não sofrerá mal algum, pois o coração sábio saberá a hora e a maneira certa de agir.
6 Tyme and cesoun is to ech werk; and myche turment is of a man,
6 Pois há uma hora certa e também uma maneira certa de agir para cada situação. O sofrimento de um homem, no entanto, pesa muito sobre ele,
7 for he knowith not thingis passid, and he mai not knowe bi ony messanger thingis to comynge.
7 visto que ninguém conhece o futuro. Quem lhe poderá dizer o que vai acontecer?
8 It is not in the power of man to forbede the spirit, nethir he hath power in the dai of deth, nethir he is suffrid to haue reste, whanne the batel neiyeth; nethir wickidnesse schal saue a wickid man.
8 Ninguém tem o poder de conter o próprio espírito; tampouco tem poder sobre o dia da sua morte, e de escapar dos efeitos da guerra; nem mesmo a maldade livra aqueles que a praticam.
9 I bihelde alle thes thingis, and Y yaf myn herte in alle werkis, that ben don vndur the sunne. Sum tyme a man is lord of a man, to his yuel.
9 Tudo isso vi quando me pus a refletir em tudo o que se faz debaixo do sol. Há ocasiões em que um homem domina sobre outros para a sua própria infelicidade.
10 Y siy wickid men biryed, which, whanne thei lyueden yit, weren in hooli place; and thei weren preisid in the citee, as men of iust werkis; but also this is vanyte.
10 Nessas ocasiões, vi ímpios serem sepultados e gente indo e vindo do lugar onde eles foram enterrados. Todavia, os que haviam praticado o bem foram esquecidos na cidade. Isso também não faz sentido.
11 Forsothe for the sentence is not brouyt forth soone ayens yuele men, the sones of men doon yuels with outen ony drede.
11 Quando os crimes não são castigados logo, o coração do homem se enche de planos para fazer o mal.
12 Netheles of that, that a synnere doith yuel an hundrid sithis, and is suffrid bi pacience, Y knew that good schal be to men dredynge God, that reuerensen his face.
12 O ímpio pode cometer uma centena de crimes e até ter vida longa, mas sei muito bem que as coisas serão melhores para os que temem a Deus, para os que mostram respeito diante dele.
13 Good be not to the wickid man, nethir hise daies be maad longe; but passe thei as schadewe, that dreden not the face of the Lord.
13 Para os ímpios, no entanto, nada irá bem, porque não temem a Deus, e os seus dias, como sombras, serão poucos.
14 Also another vanyte is, which is don on erthe. Iust men ben, to whiche yuels comen, as if thei diden the werkis of wickid men; and wickid men ben, that ben so sikur, as if thei han the dedis of iust men; but Y deme also this moost veyn.
14 Há mais uma coisa sem sentido na terra: justos que recebem o que os ímpios merecem, e ímpios que recebem o que os justos merecem. Isto também, penso eu, não faz sentido.
15 Therfor Y preysid gladnesse, that no good was to a man vndur the sunne, no but to ete, and drynke, and to be ioiful; and that he schulde bere awei with hym silf oneli this of his trauel, in the daies of his lijf, whiche God yaf to hym vndur the sunne.
15 Por isso recomendo que se desfrute a vida, porque debaixo do sol não há nada melhor para o homem do que comer, beber e alegrar-se. Sejam esses os seus companheiros no seu duro trabalho durante todos os dias da vida que Deus lhe der debaixo do sol!
16 And Y settide myn herte to knowe wisdom, and to vndurstonde the departing, which is turned in erthe. A man is, that bi daies and niytis takith not sleep with iyen.
16 Quando voltei a mente para conhecer a sabedoria e observar as atividades do homem sobre a terra, daquele cujos olhos não vêem sono nem de dia nem de noite,
17 And Y vndurstood, that of alle the werkis of God, a man may fynde no resoun of tho thingis, that ben don vndur the sunne; and in as myche as he traueilith more to seke, bi so myche he schal fynde lesse; yhe, thouy a wijs man seith that he knowith, he schal not mow fynde.
17 então percebi tudo o que Deus tem feito. Ninguém é capaz de entender o que se faz debaixo do sol. Por mais que se esforce para descobrir o sentido das coisas, o homem não o encontrará. O sábio pode até afirmar que entende, mas, na realidade não o consegue encontrar.
