1 The wisdom of a man schyneth in his cheer; and the myytieste schal chaunge his face.
1 Quem é como o homem sábio? E quem sabe a interpretação das coisas? A sabedoria do homem faz brilhar a sua face, e o vigor da sua face é alterado.
2 I kepe the mouth of the kyng, and the comaundementis and sweryngis of God.
2 Eu aconselho que observes o mandamento do rei, e isso em consideração ao juramento de Deus.
3 Haste thou not to go awei fro his face, and dwelle thou not in yuel werk. For he schal do al thing, that he wole;
3 Não te apresses a sair da sua vista, nem persistas em alguma coisa má, porque ele faz tudo do modo como quer.
4 and his word is ful of power, and no man mai seie to hym, Whi doist thou so?
4 Porque a palavra de um rei tem poder; e quem lhe dirá: Que fazes?
5 He that kepith the comaundement of God `in this lijf, schal not feele ony thing of yuel; the herte of a wijs man vndurstondith tyme and answer.
5 Quem guardar o mandamento não sentirá mal algum; e o coração do sábio discernirá o tempo e o juízo.
6 Tyme and cesoun is to ech werk; and myche turment is of a man,
6 Porque para todo o propósito há tempo e juízo; porquanto a miséria do homem é grande sobre ele.
7 for he knowith not thingis passid, and he mai not knowe bi ony messanger thingis to comynge.
7 Porque ele não sabe o que há de ser; porquanto quem lhe dirá quando há de ser?
8 It is not in the power of man to forbede the spirit, nethir he hath power in the dai of deth, nethir he is suffrid to haue reste, whanne the batel neiyeth; nethir wickidnesse schal saue a wickid man.
8 Nenhum homem há que tenha poder sobre o espírito, para o reter; nem tem ele poder no dia da morte; nem se liberar em tempo de guerra; nem a maldade livrará aqueles que a possuem.
9 I bihelde alle thes thingis, and Y yaf myn herte in alle werkis, that ben don vndur the sunne. Sum tyme a man is lord of a man, to his yuel.
9 Tudo isto eu tenho visto, e apliquei o meu coração a toda a obra que se faz debaixo do sol; há um tempo em que um homem governa sobre outro homem, para o seu próprio dano.
10 Y siy wickid men biryed, which, whanne thei lyueden yit, weren in hooli place; and thei weren preisid in the citee, as men of iust werkis; but also this is vanyte.
10 E então eu vi os ímpios sepultados, aqueles que tinham entrado e saído do lugar santo; e eles foram esquecidos na cidade em que assim fizeram; isto também é vaidade.
11 Forsothe for the sentence is not brouyt forth soone ayens yuele men, the sones of men doon yuels with outen ony drede.
11 Porque não se executa rapidamente uma sentença sobre a má obra, então o coração dos filhos dos homens está inteiramente disposto a fazer o mal.
12 Netheles of that, that a synnere doith yuel an hundrid sithis, and is suffrid bi pacience, Y knew that good schal be to men dredynge God, that reuerensen his face.
12 Embora o pecador pratique o mal cem vezes, e os seus dias se prolonguem, ainda assim eu sei com certeza que bem sucede aos que temem a Deus, aos que temem diante dele.
13 Good be not to the wickid man, nethir hise daies be maad longe; but passe thei as schadewe, that dreden not the face of the Lord.
13 Porém, o ímpio não irá bem, e ele não lhe prolongará os dias, que são como a sombra; porque ele não teme diante de Deus.
14 Also another vanyte is, which is don on erthe. Iust men ben, to whiche yuels comen, as if thei diden the werkis of wickid men; and wickid men ben, that ben so sikur, as if thei han the dedis of iust men; but Y deme also this moost veyn.
14 Há uma vaidade que se faz sobre a terra: há homens justos a quem sucede de acordo com as obras dos ímpios, e também há homens ímpios a quem sucede de acordo com as obras dos justos. Eu digo que isto também é vaidade.
15 Therfor Y preysid gladnesse, that no good was to a man vndur the sunne, no but to ete, and drynke, and to be ioiful; and that he schulde bere awei with hym silf oneli this of his trauel, in the daies of his lijf, whiche God yaf to hym vndur the sunne.
15 Então eu elogiei a alegria, porque o homem não tem nada melhor debaixo do sol do que comer, beber e alegrar-se; porque isso o acompanhará no seu trabalho nos dias da sua vida, que Deus lhe dá debaixo do sol.
16 And Y settide myn herte to knowe wisdom, and to vndurstonde the departing, which is turned in erthe. A man is, that bi daies and niytis takith not sleep with iyen.
16 Quando apliquei o meu coração a conhecer a sabedoria, e a ver o negócio que é realizado sobre a terra (pois também há que, nem o dia nem a noite dorme com os seus olhos);
17 And Y vndurstood, that of alle the werkis of God, a man may fynde no resoun of tho thingis, that ben don vndur the sunne; and in as myche as he traueilith more to seke, bi so myche he schal fynde lesse; yhe, thouy a wijs man seith that he knowith, he schal not mow fynde.
17 então contemplei toda a obra de Deus, que o homem não pode descobrir a obra que se faz debaixo do sol; por mais que trabalhe o homem para a descobrir, contudo, ele não a encontrará; e embora o homem sábio pense que a conhece, ainda assim ele não poderá encontrá-la.
