1 This letter which I am now writing to you, dear friends, is my second letter. In both my letters I seek to revive in your honest minds the memory of certain things,
1 Meus queridos amigos, esta é a segunda carta que estou escrevendo a vocês. Nessas duas cartas, procuro despertar pensamentos puros na mente de vocês, fazendo com que lembrem dessas coisas.
2 so that you may recall the words spoken long ago by the holy Prophets, and the commandments of our Lord and Saviour given you through your Apostles.
2 Quero que lembrem das palavras ditas há muito tempo pelos santos profetas e do mandamento do nosso Senhor e Salvador que foi dado a vocês por meio dos apóstolos que anunciaram o evangelho a vocês.
3 But, above all, remember that, in the last days, men will come who make a mock at everything–men governed only by their own passions,
3 Primeiro vocês precisam saber que nos últimos dias vão aparecer homens dominados pelas suas próprias paixões. Eles vão zombar de vocês,
4 and, asking, »What has become of His promised Return? For from the time our forefathers fell asleep all things continue as they have been ever since the creation of the world.«
4 dizendo: “Ele prometeu vir, não foi? Onde está ele? Os nossos pais morreram, e tudo continua do mesmo jeito que era desde a criação do mundo.”
5 For they are wilfully blind to the fact that there were heavens which existed of old, and an earth, the latter arising out of water and extending continuously through water, by the command of God;
5 Esses zombadores esquecem, de propósito, que há muito tempo Deus deu uma ordem, e os céus e a terra foram criados. Esquecem que a terra foi formada da água e no meio da água
6 and that, by means of these, the then existing race of men was overwhelmed with water and perished.
6 e também que pela água do dilúvio o mundo antigo foi destruído.
7 But the present heavens and the present earth are, by the command of the same God, kept stored up, reserved for fire in preparation for a day of judgement and of destruction for the ungodly.
7 Mas os céus e a terra que agora existem estão sendo guardados pela mesma ordem de Deus a fim de serem destruídos pelo fogo. Estão sendo guardados para o Dia do Julgamento e da destruição dos que não querem saber de Deus.
8 But there is one thing, dear friends, which you must not forget. With the Lord one day resembles a thousand years and a thousand years resemble one day.
8 Meus queridos amigos, não esqueçam isto: para o Senhor um dia é como mil anos, e mil anos, como um dia.
9 The Lord is not slow in fulfilling His promise, in the sense in which some men speak of slowness. But He bears patiently with you, His desire being that no one should perish but that all should come to repentance.
9 O Senhor não demora a fazer o que prometeu, como alguns pensam. Pelo contrário, ele tem paciência com vocês porque não quer que ninguém seja destruído, mas deseja que todos se arrependam dos seus pecados.
10 The day of the Lord will come like a thief–it will be a day on which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, the elements be destroyed in the fierce heat, and the earth and all the works of man be utterly burnt up.
10 Porém o Dia do Senhor chegará como um ladrão. Naquele dia os céus vão desaparecer com um barulho espantoso, e tudo o que há no Universo será queimado. A terra e tudo o que existe nela vão sumir.
11 Since all these things are thus pre-destined to dissolution, what sort of men ought you to be found to be in all holy living and godly conduct,
11 Sabendo que tudo isso vai ser destruído assim, então que tipo de gente vocês precisam ser? A vida de vocês deve ser agradável a Deus e dedicada a ele.
12 eagerly looking forward to the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens, all ablaze, will be destroyed, and the elements will melt in the fierce heat?
12 Esperem a vinda do Dia de Deus e façam o possível para que venha logo. Naquele dia os céus serão destruídos com fogo, e tudo o que há no Universo ficará derretido.
13 But in accordance with His promise we are expecting new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness will dwell.
13 Porém Deus prometeu, e nós estamos esperando um novo céu e uma nova terra, onde tudo será feito de acordo com a vontade dele.
14 Therefore, dear friends, since you have these expectations, earnestly seek to be found in His presence, free from blemish or reproach, in peace.
14 Por isso, meus amigos, enquanto vocês esperam aquele dia, façam o possível para estar em paz com Deus, sem mancha e sem culpa diante dele.
15 And always regard the patient forbearance of our Lord as salvation, as our dear brother Paul also has written to you in virtue of the wisdom granted to him.
15 Lembrem que a paciência do nosso Senhor é uma oportunidade para vocês serem salvos. Pois o nosso querido irmão Paulo, com a sabedoria que Deus lhe deu, escreveu a vocês sobre esse assunto.
16 That is what he says in all his letters, when speaking in them of these things. In those letters there are some statements hard to understand, which ill-taught and unprincipled people pervert, just as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own ruin.
16 E foi isso mesmo que ele disse em todas as suas cartas quando escreveu a respeito disso. Nas cartas dele há algumas coisas difíceis de entender, que os ignorantes e os fracos na fé explicam de maneira errada, como fazem também com outras partes das Escrituras Sagradas . E assim eles causam a sua própria destruição.
17 You, therefore, dear friends, having been warned beforehand, must continually be on your guard so as not to be led astray by the false teaching of immoral men nor fall from your own stedfastness.
17 Mas vocês, meus amigos, já sabem disso. Portanto, tomem cuidado para não serem levados pelos erros de pessoas imorais e para não caírem da sua posição segura.
18 But be always growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be all glory, both now and to the day of Eternity!
18 Porém continuem a crescer na graça e no conhecimento do nosso Senhor e Salvador Jesus Cristo. Glória a ele, agora e para sempre! Amém !
