Eclesiastes 6

1 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is heavy on man:
1 Também tenho visto outra coisa muito triste que acontece neste mundo:
2 a man to whom God gives riches, wealth, and honor, so that he lacks nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God does not give him power to eat of it, but an alien eats it; this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
2 Deus dá a alguns tudo o que desejam — riquezas, propriedades e fama. Porém depois não deixa que eles aproveitem nada disso. E é algum estranho quem aproveita, e não ele. Isso também é ilusão e não está certo.
3 If a man begets a hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not filled with good, and moreover he has no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he:
3 Que adianta um homem viver muitos anos e ter cem filhos se não aproveitar as coisas boas da vida e não tiver um sepultamento decente? Eu digo que uma criança que nasce morta tem mais sorte do que ele.
4 for he comes in vanity, and departs in darkness, and his name is covered with darkness;
4 É inútil a vinda dessa criança; ela desaparece na escuridão, onde é esquecida.
5 moreover he has not seen the sun nor known it; this has rest rather than the other:
5 Não chega a ver a luz do dia, nem a saber como é a vida. Mas pelo menos encontra mais descanso do que aquele homem,
6 yes, though he lives a thousand years twice told, and yet enjoys no good, do not all go to one place?
6 que poderia ter vivido dois mil anos sem nunca ter aproveitado a vida. E, no fim, não vamos todos para o mesmo lugar?
7 All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
7 Todos trabalham duro para ter o que comer, mas nunca ficam satisfeitos.
8 For what advantage has the wise more than the fool? [Or] what has the poor man, that knows how to walk before the living?
8 Que vantagem tem o sábio sobre o tolo? Que vantagem tem o pobre em saber enfrentar a vida?
9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this also is vanity and a striving after wind.
9 Isso também é ilusão, é correr atrás do vento. É muito melhor ficar satisfeito com o que se tem do que estar sempre querendo mais.
10 Whatever has been, its name was given long ago; and it is known what man is; neither can he contend with him who is mightier than he.
10 Tudo o que se passa neste mundo já foi resolvido há muito tempo. Antes de uma pessoa nascer, já está decidido o que vai acontecer com ela. E nós sabemos que não podemos discutir com quem é mais forte do que a gente.
11 Seeing there are many things that increase vanity, what is the advantage to man?
11 Uma coisa é certa: quanto mais falamos, mais tolices dizemos; e não ganhamos nada com isso.
12 For who knows what is good for man in [his] life, all the days of his vain life which he spends as a shadow? For who can tell man what will be after him under the sun?
12 De fato, como é que podemos saber o que é melhor para nós nesta vida de ilusões, vida que passa como uma sombra? Como podemos saber o que vai acontecer na terra depois da nossa morte?
