1 I do not want many of you, my friends, to become teachers, knowing, as you do, that we who teach will be judged by a more severe standard than others.
1 Meus irmãos, não sejam, muitos de vocês, mestres, sabendo que seremos julgados com mais rigor.
2 We often make mistakes, every one of us. Anyone who does not make mistakes when speaking is indeed a perfect person, able to bridle their whole body as well.
2 Porque todos tropeçamos em muitas coisas. Se alguém não tropeça no falar, é um indivíduo perfeito, capaz de refrear também todo o corpo.
3 When we put bits into horses’ mouths, to make them obey us, we control the rest of their bodies so.
3 Ora, se colocamos um freio na boca dos cavalos, para que nos obedeçam, também lhes dirigimos o corpo inteiro.
4 Again, think of ships. Large as they are, and even when driven by fierce winds, they are controlled by a very small rudder and steered in whatever direction the man at the helm may determine.
4 Observem, igualmente, os navios que, sendo tão grandes e impelidos por fortes ventos, são dirigidos por um pequeníssimo leme, e levados para onde o piloto quer.
5 So is it with the tongue. Small as it is, it is a great boaster. Think how tiny a spark may set the largest forest ablaze!
5 Assim, também a língua, pequeno órgão, se gaba de grandes coisas. Vejam como uma fagulha incendeia uma grande floresta!
6 And the tongue is like a spark. Among the members of our body it proves itself a world of mischief; it contaminates the whole body; it sets the wheels of life on fire, and is itself set on fire by the flames of Gehenna.
6 Ora, a língua é um fogo; é um mundo de maldade. A língua está situada entre os membros do nosso corpo e contamina o corpo inteiro, e não só põe em chamas toda a carreira da existência humana, como também ela mesma é posta em chamas pelo inferno.
7 For while all sorts of beasts and birds, and of reptiles and creatures in the sea, are tameable, and actually have been tamed by man,
7 Pois toda espécie de animais, de aves, de répteis e de seres marinhos se doma e tem sido domada pelo gênero humano,
8 no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless plague! It is charged with deadly poison!
8 mas a língua ninguém é capaz de domar; é mal incontido, cheio de veneno mortal.
9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made ‘in God’s likeness.’
9 Com ela, bendizemos o Senhor e Pai; também, com ela, amaldiçoamos as pessoas, criadas à semelhança de Deus.
10 From the very same mouth come blessings and curses! My friends, it is not right that this should be so.
10 De uma só boca procede bênção e maldição. Meus irmãos, isso não deveria ser assim.
11 Does a spring give both good and bad water from the same source?
11 Por acaso pode a fonte jorrar do mesmo lugar água doce e água amarga?
12 Can a fig tree, my friends, bear olives? Or a vine bear figs? No, nor can a brackish well give good water.
12 Meus irmãos, será que a figueira pode produzir azeitonas ou a videira, figos? Assim, também, uma fonte de água salgada não pode dar água doce.
13 Who among you claims to be wise and intelligent? Let them show that their actions are the outcome of a good life lived in the humility of true wisdom.
13 Quem entre vocês é sábio e inteligente? Mostre as suas obras em mansidão de sabedoria, mediante a sua boa conduta.
14 But, while you harbor envy and bitterness and a spirit of rivalry in your hearts, do not boast or lie to the detriment of the truth.
14 Se, pelo contrário, vocês têm em seu coração inveja amargurada e sentimento de rivalidade, não se gloriem disso, nem mintam contra a verdade.
15 That is not the wisdom which comes from above; no, it is earthly, animal, devilish.
15 Esta não é a sabedoria que desce lá do alto; pelo contrário, é terrena, animal e demoníaca.
16 For, where envy and rivalry exist, there you will also find disorder and all kinds of base actions.
16 Pois, onde há inveja e rivalidade, aí há confusão e toda espécie de coisas ruins.
17 But the wisdom from above is, before every thing else, pure; then peace-loving, gentle, open to conviction, rich in compassion and good deeds, and free from partiality and insincerity.
17 Mas a sabedoria lá do alto é, primeiramente, pura; depois, pacífica, gentil, amigável, cheia de misericórdia e de bons frutos, imparcial, sem fingimento.
18 And righteousness, its fruit, is sown in peace by those who work for peace.
18 Ora, é em paz que se semeia o fruto da justiça, para os que promovem a paz.
