1 Therefore, let us leave behind the elementary teaching about the Christ and press on to perfection, not always laying over again a foundation of repentance for a lifeless formality, of faith in God —
1 Pelo que, transpondo os ensinamentos elementares da doutrina de Cristo, procuremos alcançar-lhe a plenitude. Não queremos agora insistir nas noções fundamentais da conversão, da renúncia ao pecado, da fé em Deus,
2 teaching concerning baptisms and the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead and a final judgment.
2 a doutrina dos vários batismos, da imposição das mãos, da ressurreição dos mortos e do julgamento eterno.
3 Yes and, with God’s help, we will.
3 Isto faremos, se Deus o permitir.
4 For if those who were once for all brought into the light, and learned to appreciate the gift from heaven, and came to share in the Holy Spirit,
4 Porque aqueles que foram uma vez iluminados saborearam o dom celestial, participaram dos dons do Espírito Santo,
5 and learned to appreciate the beauty of the divine message, and the new powers of the coming age —
5 experimentaram a doçura da palavra de Deus e as maravilhas do mundo vindouro e, apesar disso, caíram na apostasia,
6 if those, I say, fell away, it would be impossible to bring them again to repentance; they would be crucifying the Son of God over again for themselves, and exposing him to open contempt.
6 é impossível que se renovem outra vez para a penitência, visto que, da sua parte, crucificaram de novo o Filho de Deus e publicamente o escarneceram.
7 Ground that drinks in the showers that from time to time fall on it, and produces vegetation useful to those for whom it is tilled, receives a blessing from God;
7 O terreno que recebe chuvas freqüentes e fornece ao agricultor boas searas, é abençoado por Deus.
8 but, if it ‘bears thorns and thistles,’ it is regarded as worthless, it is in danger of being ‘cursed,’ and its end will be the fire.
8 O que produz só espinhos e abrolhos, é abandonado, não demora que será amaldiçoado e acabará sendo incendiado.
9 But about you, dear friends, even though we speak in this way, we are confident of better things — of things that point to your salvation.
9 Embora vos falemos desse modo, caríssimos, temos a melhor idéia a vosso respeito e de vossa salvação.
10 For God is not unjust; he will not forget the work that you did, and the love that you showed for his name, in sending help to your fellow Christians — as you are still doing.
10 Deus não é injusto e não esquecerá vossas obras e a caridade que mostrastes por amor de seu nome, vós que servistes e continuais a servir os santos.
11 But our great desire is that every one of you should be equally earnest to attain to a full conviction that our hope will be fulfilled, and that you should keep that hope to the end.
11 Desejamos, apenas, que ponhais todo o empenho em guardar intata a vossa esperança até o fim,
12 Then you will not show yourselves slow to learn, but you will copy those who, through faith and patience, are now entering upon the enjoyment of God’s promises.
12 e que, longe de vos tornardes negligentes, sejais imitadores daqueles que pela fé e paciência se tornam herdeiros das promessas.
13 When God gave his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater by whom he could swear, he swore by himself.
13 Quando Deus fez a promessa a Abraão, como não houvesse ninguém maior por quem jurar, jurou por si mesmo,
14 His words were — ‘I will assuredly bless you and increase your numbers.’
14 dizendo: Em verdade eu te abençoarei, e multiplicarei a tua posteridade {Gn 22,16s}.
15 And so, after patiently waiting, Abraham obtained the fulfillment of God’s promise.
15 E Abraão, esperando com paciência, alcançou a realização da promessa.
16 People, of course, swear by what is greater than themselves, and with them an oath is accepted as putting a matter beyond all dispute.
16 Os homens, com efeito, juram por quem é maior do que eles, e o juramento serve de garantia e põe fim a toda controvérsia.
17 And therefore God, in his desire to show, with unmistakable plainness, to those who were to enter on the enjoyment of what he had promised, the unchangeableness of his purpose, bound himself with an oath.
17 Por isso, querendo Deus mostrar mais seguramente aos herdeiros da promessa a imutabilidade da sua resolução, interpôs o juramento.
18 For he intended us to find great encouragement in these two unchangeable things, which make it impossible for God to prove false — we, I mean, who fled for safety where we might lay hold on the hope set before us.
18 Por este ato duplamente irrevogável, pelo qual o próprio Deus se proibia de desdizer-se, encontramos motivo de profunda consolação, nós que pusemos nossa perspectiva em alcançar a esperança proposta.
19 This hope is an anchor for our souls, secure and strong, and it ‘reaches into the sanctuary that lies behind the curtain,’
19 Esperança esta que seguramos qual âncora de nossa alma, firme e sólida, e que penetra até além do véu, no santuário
20 where Jesus, our forerunner, has entered on our behalf, after being made for all time a high priest of the order of Melchizedek.
20 onde Jesus entrou por nós como precursor, Pontífice eterno, segundo a ordem de Melquisedec.
