1 Therefore, let us leave behind the elementary teaching about the Christ and press on to perfection, not always laying over again a foundation of repentance for a lifeless formality, of faith in God —
1 Pelo que, deixando os princípios da doutrina de Cristo, prossigamos até a perfeição, não lançando de novo o fundamento de arrependimento de obras mortas e de fé em Deus,
2 teaching concerning baptisms and the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead and a final judgment.
2 de doutrina sobre batismos, e de imposição de mãos, e sobre ressurreição de mortos e sobre juízo eterno.
3 Yes and, with God’s help, we will.
3 E isso faremos, se Deus o permitir.
4 For if those who were once for all brought into the light, and learned to appreciate the gift from heaven, and came to share in the Holy Spirit,
4 Porque é impossível que os que uma vez foram iluminados, e provaram o dom celestial, e se fizeram participantes do Espírito Santo,
5 and learned to appreciate the beauty of the divine message, and the new powers of the coming age —
5 e provaram a boa palavra de Deus, e os poderes do mundo que há de vir,
6 if those, I say, fell away, it would be impossible to bring them again to repentance; they would be crucifying the Son of God over again for themselves, and exposing him to open contempt.
6 se eles caírem, sejam outra vez renovados para arrependimento; visto que eles de novo crucificam para si mesmo o Filho de Deus, expondo-o em uma vergonha aberta.
7 Ground that drinks in the showers that from time to time fall on it, and produces vegetation useful to those for whom it is tilled, receives a blessing from God;
7 Porque a terra que absorve a chuva que cai sobre ela, e produz erva útil, provê para aqueles que a lavram e recebe a bênção da parte de Deus.
8 but, if it ‘bears thorns and thistles,’ it is regarded as worthless, it is in danger of being ‘cursed,’ and its end will be the fire.
8 Mas aquela que produz espinhos e abrolhos é rejeitada, e perto está da maldição; e o seu fim é ser queimada.
9 But about you, dear friends, even though we speak in this way, we are confident of better things — of things that point to your salvation.
9 Porém, amados, esperamos coisas melhores de vós, e coisas que acompanham a salvação, embora falemos assim.
10 For God is not unjust; he will not forget the work that you did, and the love that you showed for his name, in sending help to your fellow Christians — as you are still doing.
10 Porque Deus não é injusto para que se esqueça de vossa obra, e do trabalho de amor que para com o seu nome mostrastes, porquanto ministrastes aos santos, e ainda os servis.
11 But our great desire is that every one of you should be equally earnest to attain to a full conviction that our hope will be fulfilled, and that you should keep that hope to the end.
11 E desejamos que cada um de vós mostre o mesmo zelo até a completa certeza da esperança até o fim.
12 Then you will not show yourselves slow to learn, but you will copy those who, through faith and patience, are now entering upon the enjoyment of God’s promises.
12 Para que não estejais ociosos, mas sejais seguidores dos que pela fé e paciência herdam as promessas.
13 When God gave his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater by whom he could swear, he swore by himself.
13 Porque, quando Deus fez a promessa a Abraão, visto que não havia alguém maior por quem jurar, ele jurou por si mesmo,
14 His words were — ‘I will assuredly bless you and increase your numbers.’
14 dizendo: Certamente abençoando eu te abençoarei e multiplicando eu te multiplicarei.
15 And so, after patiently waiting, Abraham obtained the fulfillment of God’s promise.
15 E assim, tendo Abraão perseverado pacientemente, obteve a promessa.
16 People, of course, swear by what is greater than themselves, and with them an oath is accepted as putting a matter beyond all dispute.
16 Porque os homens verdadeiramente juram pelo maior, e o juramento de confirmação é, para eles, um fim de toda contenda.
17 And therefore God, in his desire to show, with unmistakable plainness, to those who were to enter on the enjoyment of what he had promised, the unchangeableness of his purpose, bound himself with an oath.
17 E assim Deus, desejando mostrar mais abundantemente aos herdeiros da promessa a imutabilidade do seu conselho, confirmou-o com juramento;
18 For he intended us to find great encouragement in these two unchangeable things, which make it impossible for God to prove false — we, I mean, who fled for safety where we might lay hold on the hope set before us.
18 para que através de duas coisas imutáveis, nas quais é impossível que Deus minta, pudéssemos ter uma poderosa consolação, nós, que procuramos refúgio na esperança colocada diante de nós.
19 This hope is an anchor for our souls, secure and strong, and it ‘reaches into the sanctuary that lies behind the curtain,’
19 Esperança essa que temos como âncora da alma, segura e firme, e que penetra até o interior do véu;
20 where Jesus, our forerunner, has entered on our behalf, after being made for all time a high priest of the order of Melchizedek.
20 onde o precursor entrou por nós, o próprio Jesus, feito sumo sacerdote para sempre, segundo a ordem de Melquisedeque.
