1 And king Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, whom Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, had made king, reigned as king in the land of Judah in place of Coniah, the son of Jehoiakim.
1 O rei Nabucodonosor, da Babilônia, pôs Zedequias, filho de Josias, como rei na terra de Judá, no lugar de Joaquim, filho de Jeoaquim.
2 But he and his servants and the people of the land did not listen to the words of Yahweh that he spoke by the hand of Jeremiah the prophet.
2 Mas nem Zedequias, nem as autoridades, nem o povo obedeceram à mensagem de Deus, que eu, o profeta Jeremias, lhes entreguei.
3 And king Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to Jeremiah the prophet, ⌞saying⌟, “Please pray for us to Yahweh our God.”
3 O rei Zedequias mandou que Jucal, filho de Selemias, e o sacerdote Sofonias, filho de Maaseias, fossem falar comigo. Eles disseram: — Por favor, Jeremias, ore ao
4 Now Jeremiah was coming and going out in the midst of the people and they had not put him in the house of imprisonment.
4 Eu ainda não tinha sido preso e andava livremente no meio do povo.
5 And the army of Pharaoh had come out from Egypt, and the Chaldeans, who were laying siege to Jerusalem, heard their report and they withdrew from Jerusalem.
5 Nesse tempo, o exército egípcio havia saído do Egito. E, quando os babilônios que estavam cercando Jerusalém souberam disso, foram embora. Então o Senhor , o Deus de Israel, me mandou dizer o seguinte a Zedequias, rei de Judá: — O exército egípcio, que vem vindo para socorrer você, vai voltar para o Egito.
6 And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah the prophet, ⌞saying⌟,

7 “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘This is what you shall say to the king of Judah, who sent you to me to inquire of me, “Look, the army of Pharaoh, which set out to help you, is going to return to his land Egypt.

8 And the Chaldeans will return, and they will fight against this city, and they will capture it, and they will burn it with fire.” ’
8 Aí os babilônios voltarão para atacar esta cidade. Eles vão conquistá-la e pôr fogo nela.
9 Thus says Yahweh: ‘You must not deceive yourselves, ⌞saying⌟, “Surely the Chaldeans will go from us,” for they will not go.
9 Eu, o Senhor , lhes dou este aviso: não se enganem, pensando que os babilônios não vão voltar. Eles voltarão.
10 For even if you struck the whole army of the Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and only men pierced through remained among them, each one in his tent, they would rise up and they would burn this city with fire.’ ”
10 Ainda que vocês derrotassem todo o exército da Babilônia, que está atacando, e ainda que desse exército sobrassem apenas homens feridos, deitados nas suas barracas, isso não adiantaria nada. Pois mesmo assim esses homens se levantariam e poriam fogo nesta cidade.
11 ⌞And then⌟, at the withdrawing of the army of the Chaldeans from Jerusalem ⌞before⌟ the army of Pharaoh,
11 As tropas dos babilônios se retiraram de Jerusalém porque o exército egípcio estava chegando.
12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to receive a portion from there in the midst of the people.
12 Nesse tempo, eu resolvi sair de Jerusalém e ir ao território da tribo de Benjamim para receber certa propriedade, que era parte de uma herança.
13 ⌞And when⌟ he was at the Gate of Benjamin, there was ⌞a sentry on duty⌟ whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, ⌞saying⌟, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans!”
13 Ao chegar ao Portão de Benjamim, o chefe da guarda, chamado Jerias, que era filho de Selemias e neto de Hananias, me fez parar e disse: — Você está fugindo para o lado dos babilônios!
14 And Jeremiah said, “That is a lie! I am not deserting to the Chaldeans.” But he would not listen to him. So Irijah seized Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.
14 — Isso é mentira! — respondi. — Eu não estou fugindo para o lado dos babilônios! Mas Jerias não quis me ouvir. Ele me prendeu e me levou às autoridades.
15 And the officials were angry at Jeremiah and they struck him. And they put him in ⌞prison⌟, in the house of Jonathan the secretary, for they had converted it to the ⌞prison⌟.
15 Elas ficaram furiosas comigo e me deram uma surra. Em seguida, me prenderam na casa de Jônatas, escrivão do rei. Essa casa tinha sido transformada em prisão.
16 So Jeremiah came to the ⌞dungeon⌟, even to the vaulted cells, and Jeremiah stayed there many days.
16 Aí me puseram numa cela cavada na terra, e eu fiquei ali muito tempo.
17 Then King Zedekiah sent and fetched him. And the king questioned him in secrecy in his house, and he said, “Is there a word from Yahweh?” And Jeremiah said, “There is.” And he said, “You will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon.”
17 Depois, o rei Zedequias mandou me buscar. Quando cheguei ao palácio, ele me perguntou em segredo: — Jeremias, você recebeu alguma mensagem de Deus, o — Sim! Recebi! O senhor, ó rei, será entregue nas mãos do rei da Babilônia.
18 Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What did I do wrong to you, or to your servants, or to this people, that you have put me in ⌞prison⌟?
18 Então aproveitei para perguntar a Zedequias: — Qual foi o crime que cometi contra o senhor, ó rei, ou contra as autoridades, ou contra este povo, para que me pusessem na cadeia?
19 And where are your prophets who prophesied to you, ⌞saying⌟, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you and against this land’?
19 Onde estão os seus profetas que lhe diziam que o rei da Babilônia não ia atacar nem o senhor nem este país?
20 Now then, my lord the king, please let my plea fall ⌞before you⌟. You must not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, so that I will not die there.”
20 Portanto, ó rei, meu senhor, agora peço que faça o que vou pedir. Por favor, não me mande de volta para a casa do seu escrivão Jônatas, pois, se eu voltar, vou acabar morrendo ali.
21 So King Zedekiah commanded, and they handed Jeremiah over in the courtyard of the guard, and they gave to him a round loaf of bread from the street of the bakers ⌞every day⌟ until the finishing of all the bread from the city. And Jeremiah stayed in the courtyard of the guard.
21 Então o rei Zedequias ordenou que me pusessem no pátio da guarda. Todos os dias me davam um pão de padaria, até que acabou todo o pão que havia na cidade. E assim fiquei no pátio da guarda.
