1 Now in those days, John the Baptist arrived, preaching in the desert of Judea,
1 Naquele tempo João Batista foi para o deserto da Judeia e começou a pregar,
2 and saying: “Repent. For the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.”
2 dizendo: — Arrependam-se dos seus pecados porque o
3 For this is the one who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, saying: “A voice crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his paths.”
3 A respeito de João, o profeta Isaías tinha escrito o seguinte: “Alguém está gritando no deserto: Preparem o caminho para o Senhor passar! Abram estradas retas para ele!”
4 Now the same John had a garment made from the hair of camels, and a leather belt around his waist. And his food was locusts and wild honey.
4 João usava uma roupa feita de pelos de camelo e um cinto de couro e comia gafanhotos e mel do mato.
5 Then Jerusalem, and all Judea, and the entire region around the Jordan went out to him.
5 Os moradores de Jerusalém, da região da Judeia e de todos os lugares em volta do rio Jordão iam ouvi-lo.
6 And they were baptized by him in the Jordan, acknowledging their sins.
6 Eles confessavam os seus pecados, e João os batizava no rio Jordão.
7 Then, seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees arriving for his baptism, he said to them: “Progeny of vipers, who warned you to flee from the approaching wrath?
7 Quando João viu que muitos fariseus e saduceus vinham para serem batizados por ele, disse: — Ninhada de cobras venenosas! Quem disse que vocês escaparão do terrível castigo que Deus vai mandar?
8 Therefore, produce fruit worthy of repentance.
8 Façam coisas que mostrem que vocês se arrependeram dos seus pecados.
9 And do not choose to say within yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones.
9 E não digam uns aos outros: “Abraão é nosso antepassado.” Pois eu afirmo a vocês que até destas pedras Deus pode fazer descendentes de Abraão!
10 For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.
10 O machado já está pronto para cortar as árvores pela raiz. Toda árvore que não dá frutas boas será cortada e jogada no fogo.
11 Indeed, I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who will come after me is more powerful than me. I am not worthy to carry his shoes. He will baptize you with the fire of the Holy Spirit.
11 Eu os batizo com água para mostrar que vocês se arrependeram dos seus pecados, mas aquele que virá depois de mim os batizará com o Espírito Santo e fogo. Ele é mais importante do que eu, e não mereço a honra de carregar as sandálias dele.
12 His winnowing fan is in his hand. And he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. And he will gather his wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
12 Com a pá que tem na mão ele vai separar o trigo da palha. Guardará o trigo no seu depósito, mas queimará a palha no fogo que nunca se apaga.
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee, to John at the Jordan, in order to be baptized by him.
13 Naqueles dias, Jesus foi da Galileia até o rio Jordão a fim de ser batizado por João Batista.
14 But John refused him, saying, “I ought to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?”
14 Mas João tentou convencê-lo a mudar de ideia, dizendo assim: — Eu é que preciso ser batizado por você, e você está querendo que eu o batize?
15 And responding, Jesus said to him: “Permit this for now. For in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all justice.” Then he allowed him.
15 Mas Jesus respondeu: E João concordou.
16 And Jesus, having been baptized, ascended from the water immediately, and behold, the heavens were opened to him. And he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him.
16 Logo que foi batizado, Jesus saiu da água. O céu se abriu, e Jesus viu o Espírito de Deus descer como uma pomba e pousar sobre ele.
17 And behold, there was a voice from heaven, saying: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
17 E do céu veio uma voz, que disse: — Este é o meu Filho querido, que me dá muita alegria!
