1 Now in those days, John the Baptist arrived, preaching in the desert of Judea,
1 Naqueles dias, veio João, o Batista, pregando no deserto da Judeia,
2 and saying: “Repent. For the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.”
2 e dizendo: Arrependei-vos, porque o reino do céu tem-se aproximado.
3 For this is the one who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, saying: “A voice crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his paths.”
3 Porque este é o anunciado pelo profeta Isaías, dizendo: A voz de um clamando no deserto, preparai o caminho do Senhor, fazei planos seus caminhos.
4 Now the same John had a garment made from the hair of camels, and a leather belt around his waist. And his food was locusts and wild honey.
4 E este João tinha as suas vestes de pelos de camelo, e um cinto de couro em torno de seus lombos, e o seu alimento era locustas e mel silvestre.
5 Then Jerusalem, and all Judea, and the entire region around the Jordan went out to him.
5 Então vinham a ele Jerusalém e toda a Judeia, e toda a região ao redor do Jordão,
6 And they were baptized by him in the Jordan, acknowledging their sins.
6 e eram por ele batizados no Jordão, confessando os seus pecados.
7 Then, seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees arriving for his baptism, he said to them: “Progeny of vipers, who warned you to flee from the approaching wrath?
7 Mas ele vendo muitos dos fariseus e dos saduceus, que vinham ao seu batismo, disse-lhes: Ó geração de víboras, quem vos advertiu para fugir da ira vindoura?
8 Therefore, produce fruit worthy of repentance.
8 Dai, pois, frutos dignos de arrependimento.
9 And do not choose to say within yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones.
9 e não pensai em dizer dentro de vós mesmos: Temos a Abraão por nosso pai, pois eu vos digo que Deus pode, destas pedras, levantar filhos a Abraão.
10 For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.
10 E também agora está posto o machado à raiz das árvores; pois, toda árvore não produzindo fruto bom, é cortada e lançada no fogo.
11 Indeed, I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who will come after me is more powerful than me. I am not worthy to carry his shoes. He will baptize you with the fire of the Holy Spirit.
11 Eu realmente vos batizo com água para o arrependimento, mas aquele que vem depois de mim é mais poderoso do que eu, cujos calçados não sou digno de carregar; ele vos batizará com o Espírito Santo e com fogo.
12 His winnowing fan is in his hand. And he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. And he will gather his wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
12 Cuja a joeira está em sua mão, e limpará minuciosamente a sua eira; recolherá no celeiro o seu trigo, mas queimará a palha no fogo inextinguível.
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee, to John at the Jordan, in order to be baptized by him.
13 Então Jesus foi da Galileia ao Jordão ter com João, para ser batizado por ele.
14 But John refused him, saying, “I ought to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?”
14 Mas João o impedia, dizendo: Eu que tenho necessidade de ser batizado por ti, e vens tu a mim?
15 And responding, Jesus said to him: “Permit this for now. For in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all justice.” Then he allowed him.
15 Jesus, porém, respondendo, disse-lhe: Deixa que assim seja por agora, pois nos convém cumprir toda a justiça. Então ele consentiu.
16 And Jesus, having been baptized, ascended from the water immediately, and behold, the heavens were opened to him. And he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him.
16 E Jesus, quando foi batizado, saiu logo da água, e eis que se lhe abriram os céus, e viu o Espírito de Deus descendo como pomba e vindo sobre ele.
17 And behold, there was a voice from heaven, saying: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
17 E eis que uma voz do céu dizia: Este é o meu Filho amado, em quem me comprazo.
