¹ 'Men, brethren, and fathers, hear my defence now unto you;' --

¹ Homens, irmàos e pais, ouvi agora a minha defesa perante vós

² and they having heard that in the Hebrew dialect he was speaking to them, gave the more silence, and he said, --

² (E, quando ouviram falar-lhes em língua hebraica, maior silêncio guardaram). E disse:

³ 'I, indeed, am a man, a Jew, having been born in Tarsus of Cilicia, and brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, having been taught according to the exactitude of a law of the fathers, being zealous of God, as all you are to-day.

³ Quanto a mim, sou judeu, nascido em Tarso da Cilícia, e nesta cidade criado aos pés de Gamaliel, instruído conforme a verdade da lei de nossos pais, zelador de Deus, como todos vós hoje sois.

⁴ 'And this way I persecuted unto death, binding and delivering up to prisons both men and women,

⁴ E persegui este caminho até à morte, prendendo, e pondo em prisões, tanto homens como mulheres,

⁵ as also the chief priest does testify to me, and all the eldership; from whom also having received letters unto the brethren, to Damascus, I was going on, to bring also those there bound to Jerusalem that they might be punished,

⁵ Como também o sumo sacerdote me é testemunha, e todo o conselho dos anciãos. E, recebendo destes cartas para os irmãos, fui a Damasco, para trazer maniatados para Jerusalém aqueles que ali estivessem, a fim de que fossem castigados.

⁶ and it came to pass, in my going on and coming near to Damascus, about noon, suddenly out of the heaven there shone a great light round about me,

⁶ Ora, aconteceu que, indo eu já de caminho, e chegando perto de Damasco, quase ao meio-dia, de repente me rodeou uma grande luz do céu.

⁷ I fell also to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why me do you persecute?

⁷ E caí por terra, e ouvi uma voz que me dizia: Saulo, Saulo, por que me persegues?

⁸ 'And I answered, Who are you, Lord? and he said unto me, I am Jesus the Nazarene whom you do persecute --

⁸ E eu respondi: Quem és, Senhor? E disse-me: Eu sou Jesus Nazareno, a quem tu persegues.

⁹ and they who are with me the light did see, and became afraid, and the voice they heard not of him who is speaking to me --

⁹ E os que estavam comigo viram, em verdade, a luz, e se atemorizaram muito, mas não ouviram a voz daquele que falava comigo.

¹⁰ and I said, What shall I do, Lord? and the Lord said unto me, Having risen, go on to Damascus, and there it shall be told you concerning all things that have been appointed for you to do.

¹⁰ Então disse eu: Senhor, que farei? E o Senhor disse-me: Levanta-te, e vai a Damasco, e ali se te dirá tudo o que te é ordenado fazer.

¹¹ 'And when I did not see from the glory of that light, being led by the hand by those who are with me, I came to Damascus,

¹¹ E, como eu não via, por causa do esplendor daquela luz, fui levado pela mão dos que estavam comigo, e cheguei a Damasco.

¹² and a certain one, Ananias, a pious man according to the law, being testified to by all the Jews dwelling there,

¹² E um certo Ananias, homem piedoso conforme a lei, que tinha bom testemunho de todos os judeus que ali moravam,

¹³ having come unto me and stood by me, said to me, Saul, brother, look up; and I the same hour did look up to him;

¹³ Vindo ter comigo, e apresentando-se, disse-me: Saulo, irmão, recobra a vista. E naquela mesma hora o vi.

¹⁴ and he said, The God of our fathers did choose you beforehand to know His will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice out of his mouth,

¹⁴ E ele disse: O Deus de nossos pais de antemão te designou para que conheças a sua vontade, e vejas aquele Justo e ouças a voz da sua boca.

¹⁵ because you shall be his witness unto all men of what you hast seen and heard;

¹⁵ Porque hás de ser sua testemunha para com todos os homens do que tens visto e ouvido.

¹⁶ and now, why tarry you? having risen, baptize yourself, and wash away your sins, calling upon the name of the Lord.

¹⁶ E agora por que te deténs? Levanta-te, e batiza-te, e lava os teus pecados, invocando o nome do Senhor.

¹⁷ 'And it came to pass when I returned to Jerusalem, and while I was praying in the temple, I came into a trance,

¹⁷ E aconteceu que, tornando eu para Jerusalém, quando orava no templo, fui arrebatado para fora de mim.

¹⁸ and I saw him saying to me, Haste and go forth in haste out of Jerusalem, because they will not receive your testimony concerning me;

¹⁸ E vi aquele que me dizia: Dá-te pressa e sai apressadamente de Jerusalém; porque não receberão o teu testemunho acerca de mim.

¹⁹ and I said, Lord, they -- they know that I was imprisoning and was scourging in every synagogue those believing on you;

¹⁹ E eu disse: Senhor, eles bem sabem que eu lançava na prisão e açoitava nas sinagogas os que criam em ti.

²⁰ and when the blood of your witness Stephen was being poured forth, I also was standing by and assenting to his death, and keeping the garments of those putting him to death;

²⁰ E quando o sangue de Estêvão, tua testemunha, se derramava, também eu estava presente, e consentia na sua morte, e guardava as capas dos que o matavam.

²¹ and he said unto me, Go, because to nations far off I will send you.'

²¹ E disse-me: Vai, porque hei de enviar-te aos gentios de longe.

²² And they were hearing him unto this word, and they lifted up their voice, saying, 'Away from the earth with such an one; for it is not fit for him to live.'

²² E ouviram-no até esta palavra, e levantaram a voz, dizendo: Tira da terra um tal homem, porque não convém que viva.

²³ And they crying out and casting up their garments, and throwing dust into the air,

²³ E, clamando eles, e arrojando de si as vestes, e lançando pó para o ar,

²⁴ the chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, saying, 'By scourges let him be examined;' that he might know for what cause they were crying so against him.

²⁴ O tribuno mandou que o levassem para a fortaleza, dizendo que o examinassem com açoites, para saber por que causa assim clamavam contra ele.

²⁵ And as he was stretching him with the thongs, Paul said unto the centurion who was standing by, 'A man, a Roman, uncondemned -- is it lawful to you to scourge;'

²⁵ E, quando o estavam atando com correias, disse Paulo ao centurião que ali estava: É-vos lícito açoitar um romano, sem ser condenado?

²⁶ and the centurion having heard, having gone near to the chief captain, told, saying, 'Take heed what you are about to do, for this man is a Roman;'

²⁶ E, ouvindo isto, o centurião foi, e anunciou ao tribuno, dizendo: Vê o que vais fazer, porque este homem é romano.

²⁷ and the chief captain having come near, said to him, 'Tell me, are you a Roman?' and he said, 'Yes;'

²⁷ E, vindo o tribuno, disse-lhe: Dize-me, és tu romano? E ele disse: Sim.

²⁸ and the chief captain answered, 'I, with a great sum, did obtain this citizenship;' but Paul said, 'But I have been even born so.'

²⁸ E respondeu o tribuno: Eu com grande soma de dinheiro alcancei este direito de cidadão. Paulo disse: Mas eu o sou de nascimento.

²⁹ Immediately, therefore, they departed from him who are about to examine him, and the chief captain also was afraid, having learned that he is a Roman, and because he had bound him,

²⁹ E logo dele se apartaram os que o haviam de examinar; e até o tribuno teve temor, quando soube que era romano, visto que o tinha ligado.

³⁰ and on the morrow, intending to know the certainty therefore he is accused by the Jews, he did loose him from the bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all their sanhedrin to come, and having brought down Paul, he set him before them.

³⁰ E no dia seguinte, querendo saber ao certo a causa por que era acusado pelos judeus, soltou-o das prisões, e mandou vir o principais dos sacerdotes, e todo o seu conselho; e, trazendo Paulo, o apresentou diante deles.
