1 Now, Jephthah the Gileadite, was a mighty man of valour, but, he, was the son of an unchaste woman,yet Gilead was the father of Jephthah.
1 Era, então, Jefté, o gileadita, homem valente, porém filho de uma prostituta; Gileade gerara a Jefté.
2 And the wife of Gilead bare him sons,and, when the wifes sons grew up, they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto himThou shalt not inherit with the house of our father, for, son of an alien woman, art thou.
2 Também a mulher de Gileade lhe deu filhos, os quais, quando já grandes, expulsaram Jefté e lhe disseram: Não herdarás em casa de nosso pai, porque és filho doutra mulher.
3 So Jephthah fled from the face of his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob,and there gathered about Jephthah unemployed men, who went forth with him.
3 Então, Jefté fugiu da presença de seus irmãos e habitou na terra de Tobe; e homens levianos se ajuntaram com ele e com ele saíam.
4 And so it came to pass, after a time,that the sons of Ammon made war with Israel.
4 Passado algum tempo, pelejaram os filhos de Amom contra Israel.
5 When, therefore, it came to pass that the sons of Ammon made war with Israel, then went the elders of Gilead, to summon Jephthah out of the land of Tob.
5 Quando pelejavam, foram os anciãos de Gileade buscar Jefté da terra de Tobe.
6 And they said to Jephthah, Oh! come and be our commander,that we may do battle with the sons of Ammon.
6 E disseram a Jefté: Vem e sê nosso chefe, para que combatamos contra os filhos de Amom.
7 But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, Have not, ye, hated me, and thrust me out from the house of my father? Wherefore then, are ye come unto me, now, when ye are in distress?
7 Porém Jefté disse aos anciãos de Gileade: Porventura, não me aborrecestes a mim e não me expulsastes da casa de meu pai? Por que, pois, vindes a mim, agora, quando estais em aperto?
8 And the elders of Gilead said unto JephthahTherefore, have we, now, returned unto thee, that, if thou go with us, and do battle with the sons of Ammon, then shalt thou become our head, for all the inhabitants of Gilead.
8 Responderam os anciãos de Gileade a Jefté: Por isso mesmo, tornamos a ti. Vem, pois, conosco, e combate contra os filhos de Amom, e sê o nosso chefe sobre todos os moradores de Gileade.
9 And Jephthah said unto the elders of GileadIf ye do bring me back to do battle with the sons of Ammon, and Yahweh deliver them up before me, shall, I myself, become your head?
9 Então, Jefté perguntou aos anciãos de Gileade: Se me tornardes a levar para combater contra os filhos de Amom, e o Senhor mos der a mim, então, eu vos serei por cabeça?
10 And the elders of Gilead said unto JephthahYahweh himself, will be hearkening between us, if, according to thy word, so, we do not.
10 Responderam os anciãos de Gileade a Jefté: O Senhor será testemunha entre nós e nos castigará se não fizermos segundo a tua palavra.
11 Then went Jephthah with the elders of Gilead, and the people set him over them, as head and commander,and Jephthah spake all his words before Yahweh, in Mizpah.
11 Então, Jefté foi com os anciãos de Gileade, e o povo o pôs por cabeça e chefe sobre si; e Jefté proferiu todas as suas palavras perante o Senhor , em Mispa.
12 So then Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the sons of Ammon, saying,What occasion is there between us, that thou shouldst have come unto me, to fight against my land?
12 Enviou Jefté mensageiros ao rei dos filhos de Amom, dizendo: Que há entre mim e ti que vieste a mim a pelejar contra a minha terra?
13 And the king of the sons of Ammon said unto the messengers of JephthahBecause Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan,now, therefore, restore them in peace.
13 Respondeu o rei dos filhos de Amom aos mensageiros de Jefté: É porque, subindo Israel do Egito, me tomou a terra desde Arnom até ao Jaboque e ainda até ao Jordão; restitui-ma, agora, pacificamente.
14 And Jephthah yet once more sent messengers unto the king of the sons of Ammon;
14 Porém Jefté tornou a enviar mensageiros ao rei dos filhos de Amom,
15 and said a unto him, Thus, saith Jephthah,Israel took not away the land of Moab, or the land of the sons of Ammon;
15 dizendo-lhe: Assim diz Jefté: Israel não tomou nem a terra dos moabitas nem a terra dos filhos de Amom;
16 for, when they came up out of Egypt, and Israel journeyed through the desert as far as the Red Sea, and came in unto Kadesh,
16 porque, subindo Israel do Egito, andou pelo deserto até ao mar Vermelho e chegou a Cades.
17 then did Israel send messengers unto the king of Edom, sayingLet me pass, I pray thee, through thy land, but the king of Edom hearkened not, unto the king of Moab also, sent they, but he would not consent,so Israel abode in Kadesh.
17 Então, Israel enviou mensageiros ao rei dos edomitas, dizendo: Rogo-te que me deixes passar pela tua terra. Porém o rei dos edomitas não lhe deu ouvidos; a mesma coisa mandou Israel pedir ao rei dos moabitas, o qual também não lhe quis atender; e, assim, Israel ficou em Cades.
18 Then journeyed they through the desert, and went round the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and so came, from the rising of the sun, to the land of Moab, but encamped beyond Arnon,and entered not within the boundary of Moab, for, Arnon, is the boundary of Moab.
18 Depois, andou pelo deserto, e rodeou a terra dos edomitas e a terra dos moabitas, e chegou ao oriente da terra destes, e se acampou além do Arnom; por isso, não entrou no território dos moabitas, porque Arnom é o limite deles.
19 Then did Israel send messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, king of Heshbon,and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land as far as my own place.
19 Mas Israel enviou mensageiros a Seom, rei dos amorreus, rei de Hesbom; e disse-lhe: Deixa-nos, peço-te, passar pela tua terra até ao meu lugar.
20 But Sihon trusted not Israel, to pass through his boundary, so Sihon gathered together all his people, and encamped in Jahaz,and fought against Israel.
20 Porém Seom, não confiando em Israel, recusou deixá-lo passar pelo seu território; pelo contrário, ajuntou todo o seu povo, e se acampou em Jaza, e pelejou contra Israel.
21 Then did Yahweh, God of Israel, deliver up Sihon, and all his people, into the hand of Israel, and they smote them,so Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that land.
21 O Senhor , Deus de Israel, entregou Seom e todo o seu povo nas mãos de Israel, que os feriu; e Israel desapossou os amorreus das terras que habitavam.
22 Yea they took possession of all the territory of the Amorites,from Arnon, even as far as the Jabbok, and from the desert, even as far as the Jordan.
22 Tomou posse de todo o território dos amorreus, desde o Arnom até ao Jaboque e desde o deserto até ao Jordão.
23 Now, therefore, it was, Yahweh God of Israel, that dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel,and shalt, thou, possess it?
23 Assim, o Senhor , Deus de Israel, desapossou os amorreus ante o seu povo de Israel. E pretendes tu ser dono desta terra?
24 What Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess, that, wilt thou not possess? and, whatsoever Yahweh our God hath set before us to possess, that, shall we not possess?
24 Não é certo que aquilo que Quemos, teu deus, te dá consideras como tua possessão? Assim, possuiremos nós o território de todos quantos o Senhor , nosso Deus, expulsou de diante de nós.
25 Now, therefore, art thou, really better, than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Hath there been any, striving at all, with Israel, or any, fighting at all, with them,
25 És tu melhor do que o filho de Zipor, Balaque, rei dos moabitas? Porventura, contendeu este, em algum tempo, com Israel ou pelejou alguma vez contra ele?
26 all the time that Israel hath been dwelling in Heshbon and in her towns, and in Aroer and in her towns, and in all the cities that are on the banks of Arnon,for three hundred years? Wherefore, then, have ye not made a rescue within that time?
26 Enquanto Israel habitou trezentos anos em Hesbom e nas suas vilas, e em Aroer e nas suas vilas, e em todas as cidades que estão ao longe do Arnom, por que vós, amonitas, não as recuperastes durante esse tempo?
27 I, therefore, have not sinned against thee; but, thou, art doing me a wrong, in fighting against me,Let Yahweh, the Judge, give judgment today, between the sons of Israel, and the sons of Ammon!
27 Não sou eu, portanto, quem pecou contra ti! Porém tu fazes mal em pelejar contra mim; o Senhor , que é juiz, julgue hoje entre os filhos de Israel e os filhos de Amom.
28 But the king of the sons of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah, which he sent unto him.
28 Porém o rei dos filhos de Amom não deu ouvidos à mensagem que Jefté lhe enviara.
29 Then came upon Jephthah the spirit of Yahweh, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh,and passed through Mizpeh of Gilead, and, from Mizpeh of Gilead, he passed through the sons of Ammon.
29 Então, o Espírito do Senhor veio sobre Jefté; e, atravessando este por Gileade e Manassés, passou até Mispa de Gileade e de Mispa de Gileade passou contra os filhos de Amom.
30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto Yahweh, and said,If thou wilt, deliver, the sons of Ammon into my hand,
30 Fez Jefté um voto ao Senhor e disse: Se, com efeito, me entregares os filhos de Amom nas minhas mãos,
31 then shall it be, that, whosoever cometh forth out of the doors of my house, to meet me, when I return successful, from the sons of Ammon, shall belong unto Yahweh, and I will offer him up, as an ascending-sacrifice.
31 quem primeiro da porta da minha casa me sair ao encontro, voltando eu vitorioso dos filhos de Amom, esse será do Senhor , e eu o oferecerei em holocausto.
32 So then Jephthah passed over unto the sons of Ammon, to fight against them,and Yahweh delivered them into his hand;
32 Assim, Jefté foi de encontro aos filhos de Amom, a combater contra eles; e o Senhor os entregou nas mãos de Jefté.
33 and he smote them, from Aroer even till thou enterest in to Minnith, even twenty cities, and as far as Abel-keramim, with an exceeding great smiting,and thus were the sons of Ammon subdued before the sons of Israel.
33 Este os derrotou desde Aroer até às proximidades de Minite (vinte cidades ao todo) e até Abel-Queramim; e foi mui grande a derrota. Assim, foram subjugados os filhos de Amom diante dos filhos de Israel.
34 Then came Jephthah towards Mizpah, unto his own house, and lo! his daughter, coming forth to meet him, with timbrels, and with dances,and, she, was none other than his only child, he had not, besides her, either son or daughter.
34 Vindo, pois, Jefté a Mispa, a sua casa, saiu-lhe a filha ao seu encontro, com adufes e com danças; e era ela filha única; não tinha ele outro filho nem filha.
35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and saidAlas! my daughter, Thou hast, brought me low, Even, thou, hast come to be among them who trouble me,Yet, I, opened wide my mouth unto Yahweh, and cannot go back.
35 Quando a viu, rasgou as suas vestes e disse: Ah! Filha minha, tu me prostras por completo; tu passaste a ser a causa da minha calamidade, porquanto fiz voto ao Senhor e não tornarei atrás.
36 And she said unto himMy father! Thou hast opened wide thy mouth unto Yahweh, Do with me, according to that which hath gone forth out of thy mouth,after that Yahweh hath exacted for thee an avenging from thine enemies, from the sons of Ammon.
36 E ela lhe disse: Pai meu, fizeste voto ao Senhor ; faze, pois, de mim segundo o teu voto; pois o Senhor te vingou dos teus inimigos, os filhos de Amom.
37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing, be done for me,Let me alone two months, that I may depart, and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.
37 Disse mais a seu pai: Concede-me isto: deixa-me por dois meses, para que eu vá, e desça pelos montes, e chore a minha virgindade, eu e as minhas companheiras.
38 And he saidDepart. So he let her go, for two months,and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity, upon the mountains.
38 Consentiu ele: Vai. E deixou-a ir por dois meses; então, se foi ela com as suas companheiras e chorou a sua virgindade pelos montes.
39 And it came to pass, at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, and he fulfilled on her his vow which he had vowed,she not having known man. And it became a statute, in Israel:
39 Ao fim dos dois meses, tornou ela para seu pai, o qual lhe fez segundo o voto por ele proferido; assim, ela jamais foi possuída por varão. Daqui veio o costume em Israel
40 From year to year, departed the daughters of Israel, to lament aloud for the daughter of Jephthah, the Gileadite, four days in the year.
40 de as filhas de Israel saírem por quatro dias, de ano em ano, a cantar em memória da filha de Jefté, o gileadita.
