1 And Yahweh spake unto Joshua, saying:
1 O S enhor disse a Josué:
2 Speak unto the sons of Israel, saying,Set out for you the cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you, by the hand of Moses:
2 “Diga aos israelitas que designem as cidades de refúgio, de acordo com as instruções que dei a Moisés.
3 that the manslayer who slayeth a person by mistake, unwittingly, may flee thither,so shall they be unto you for refuge from the blood-redeemer,
3 Qualquer um que matar alguém acidentalmente e sem intenção poderá fugir para uma dessas cidades; serão lugares de proteção contra os parentes da vítima que quiserem vingar sua morte.
4 and he shall flee unto one of these cities and present himself at the entrance of the gate of the city, and shall speak, in the ears of the elders of that city, his defence,and they shall take him for protection into the city unto them, and shall give him a place, so shall he dwell with them.
4 “Ao chegar a uma dessas cidades, a pessoa que tirou a vida de alguém comparecerá diante das autoridades à porta da cidade e apresentará seu caso. Eles permitirão que essa pessoa entre na cidade e lhe darão um lugar para habitar no meio deles.
5 And, when the blood-redeemer pursueth after him, then shall they not deliver up the manslayer, into his hand,because, unwittingly, it was that he slew his neighbour, and had not been, cherishing hatred, towards him, aforetime;
5 Se os parentes da vítima forem até lá para vingar sua morte, as autoridades não entregarão o acusado, pois ele matou alguém sem intenção e sem hostilidade anterior.
6 so shall he remain in that city, until he standeth before the assembly, for judgment, until the death of the high-priest who shall be in those days,then, shall the manslayer return, and enter into his own city, and into his own house, within the city from whence he fled.
6 O acusado, porém, deve permanecer na cidade e ser julgado pela comunidade, que dará o veredicto. Continuará a viver na cidade até a morte daquele que era o sumo sacerdote na época do acidente. Depois disso, terá liberdade de voltar para sua casa na cidade de onde fugiu”.
7 So then they set apart Kadesh in Galilee, in the hill country of Naphtali, and Shechem, in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba, the same, is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah.
7 Estas foram as cidades designadas como cidades de refúgio: Quedes, na Galileia, na região montanhosa de Naftali; Siquém, na região montanhosa de Efraim; e Quiriate-Arba (isto é, Hebrom), na região montanhosa de Judá.
8 And, beyond the Jordan, by Jericho eastward, they appointed Bezer in the wilderness, in the table-land, out of the tribe of Reuben,and Ramoth in Gilead, out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan, out of the tribe of Manasseh.
8 Estas foram as cidades designadas no lado leste do rio Jordão, em frente de Jericó: Bezer, no planalto desértico da tribo de Rúben; Ramote, em Gileade, no território da tribo de Gade; e Golã, em Basã, no território da tribo de Manassés.
9 These, were the cities appointed for all the sons of Israel, and for the sojourner who sojourneth in their midst, that whosoever should slay a person by mistake, might flee thither,and not die by the hand of the blood-redeemer, until he should stand before the assembly.
9 Essas cidades foram separadas para todos os israelitas, e também para os estrangeiros que viviam entre eles. Qualquer um que matasse alguém acidentalmente poderia se refugiar numa dessas cidades. Assim, não seria morto por vingança antes de comparecer a julgamento perante a comunidade.
