1 A man, there wasin the land of Uz, Job, his name,and that man was blameless and upright, and one who revered God, and avoided evil.
1 Na terra de Uz morava um homem chamado Jó. Ele era bom e honesto, temia a Deus e procurava não fazer nada que fosse errado.
2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
2 Jó tinha sete filhos e três filhas
3 And his substance wasseven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a body of servants exceeding large,thus was that man the greatest of all the sons of the East.
3 e era dono de sete mil ovelhas, três mil camelos, mil bois e quinhentas jumentas. Tinha também um grande número de escravos. Enfim, Jó era o homem mais rico de todo o Oriente.
4 Now his sons were wont to go, and make a banquet, at the house of each one upon his day,and to send and call their three sisters, to eat and to drink with them.
4 Os filhos de Jó iam às casas uns dos outros e davam banquetes, cada um por sua vez. E as três irmãs eram sempre convidadas para esses comes e bebes.
5 And so it was, when the days of the banquet came round, that Job sent and hallowed them, and rising early in the morning offered ascending-sacrifices according to the number of them all; for Job said, Peradventure my sons have sinned, and have cursed God in their hearts. Thus and thus, was Job wont to do all the days.
5 Quando terminava uma rodada de banquetes, Jó se levantava de madrugada e oferecia sacrifícios em favor de cada um dos seus filhos, para purificá-los . Jó sempre fazia isso porque pensava que um dos filhos poderia ter pecado, ofendendo a Deus em pensamento.
6 Now there came a certain day, when the sons of God entered in to present themselves unto Yahweh,so the accuser also entered, in their midst.
6 Chegou o dia em que os servidores celestiais vieram apresentar-se diante de Deus, o Senhor , e no meio deles veio também Satanás .
7 And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Whence comest thou? And the accuser answered Yahweh, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and wandering about therein.
7 O Senhor perguntou: — De onde você vem vindo? Satanás respondeu: — Estive dando uma volta pela terra, passeando por aqui e por ali.
8 And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Hast thou applied thy heart unto my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a man blameless and upright, one revering God and avoiding evil?
8 Aí o Senhor disse: — Você notou o meu
9 And the accuser answered Yahweh, and said, Is it, for nought, that Job revereth God?
9 Satanás respondeu: — Será que não é por interesse próprio que Jó te teme?
10 Hast not, thou thyself, made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? The work of his hands, thou hast blessed, and, his substance, hath broken forth in the land.
10 Tu não deixas que nenhum mal aconteça a ele, à sua família e a tudo o que ele tem. Abençoas tudo o que Jó faz, e no país inteiro ele é o homem que tem mais cabeças de gado.
11 But, in very deed, put forth, I pray thee, thy hand, and smite all that he hath,verily, unto thy face, will he curse thee.
11 Mas, se tirares tudo o que é dele, verás que ele te amaldiçoará sem nenhum respeito.
12 And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Lo! all that he hath, is in thy hand, only, against himself, do not put forth thy hand. So the accuser went forth from the presence of Yahweh.
12 O Senhor disse a Satanás: — Pois bem. Faça o que quiser com tudo o que Jó tem, mas não faça nenhum mal a ele mesmo. Então Satanás saiu da presença do
13 And there came a certain day,when his sons and his daughters were eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their eldest brother.
13 Um dia, enquanto os filhos e as filhas de Jó estavam num banquete na casa do irmão mais velho,
14 And, a messenger, came in unto Job, and said,The oxen, were plowing, and, the asses, feeding beside them;
14 chegou à casa de Jó um dos seus empregados, que disse: — Nós estávamos arando a terra com os bois, e as jumentas estavam pastando ali perto.
15 when the Sabeans swooped down, and took them, and, the young men, smote they with the edge of the sword,and escaped am, only I alone, too tell thee.
15 De repente, os sabeus nos atacaram e levaram tudo. Eles mataram à espada os empregados, e só eu consegui escapar para trazer a notícia.
16 Yet was this one speaking, when, another, came in and said,A fire of God, fell out of the heavens, and burned up the sheep and the young men, and consumed them; and escaped am, only I alone, to tell thee.
16 Enquanto este ainda estava falando, veio outro empregado e disse: — Raios caíram do céu e mataram todas as ovelhas e os pastores. Só eu consegui escapar para trazer a notícia.
17 Yet was this one speaking, when, another, came in and said, The Chaldeans, appointed three chiefs, and spread out against the camels, and took them, and, the young men, smote they with the edge of the sword; and escaped am, only I alone, to tell thee.
17 Enquanto este ainda estava falando, chegou um terceiro, que disse: — Três bandos de caldeus nos atacaram e levaram os camelos. Eles mataram à espada os empregados, e só eu consegui escapar para trazer a notícia.
18 Yet was this one speaking, when, another, came in and said,Thy sons and thy daughters, were eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their eldest brother;
18 Enquanto este ainda estava falando, chegou mais um, que disse a Jó: — Os seus filhos e as suas filhas estavam no meio de um banquete na casa do seu filho mais velho.
19 when lo! a great wind, came from over the desert, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they died,and escaped am, only I alone, to tell thee.
19 De repente, veio do deserto um vento muito forte que soprou contra a casa, e ela caiu em cima dos seus filhos. Todos eles morreram; só eu consegui escapar para trazer a notícia.
20 Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell to the earth and worshipped;
20 Então Jó se levantou e, em sinal de tristeza, rasgou as suas roupas e rapou a cabeça. Depois ajoelhou-se, encostou o rosto no chão e adorou a Deus.
21 and saidNaked came I forth from the womb of my mother, and naked must I return thither, Yahweh, gave, and, Yahweh, hath taken away,The name of Yahweh be blessed!
21 Aí disse assim: — Nasci nu, sem nada, e sem nada vou morrer. O
22 In all this, Job sinned not, nor imputed folly unto God.
22 Assim, apesar de tudo o que havia acontecido, Jó não pecou, nem pôs a culpa em Deus.
