1 A man, there wasin the land of Uz, Job, his name,and that man was blameless and upright, and one who revered God, and avoided evil.
1 Houve um homem na terra de Uz, cujo nome era Jó; e aquele homem era perfeito e íntegro, e alguém que temia a Deus, e afastava-se do mal.
2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
2 E nasceram-lhe sete filhos e três filhas.
3 And his substance wasseven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a body of servants exceeding large,thus was that man the greatest of all the sons of the East.
3 Sua posse também era de sete mil ovelhas, três mil camelos, quinhentas juntas de bois e quinhentas jumentas; e muitíssimos os seus servos, de modo que este homem era maior de todos os homens do Oriente.
4 Now his sons were wont to go, and make a banquet, at the house of each one upon his day,and to send and call their three sisters, to eat and to drink with them.
4 E seus filhos iam e festejavam em suas casas, cada um no seu dia; e mandavam chamar as suas três irmãs para comerem e beberem com eles.
5 And so it was, when the days of the banquet came round, that Job sent and hallowed them, and rising early in the morning offered ascending-sacrifices according to the number of them all; for Job said, Peradventure my sons have sinned, and have cursed God in their hearts. Thus and thus, was Job wont to do all the days.
5 E assim era que, quando os dias de seus banquetes terminavam, enviava Jó, e os santificava, e se levantava de madrugada, e oferecia ofertas queimadas de acordo com o número de todos eles; porque Jó dizia: Pode ser que meus filhos tenham pecado e amaldiçoado a Deus em seus corações. Assim fazia Jó continuamente.
6 Now there came a certain day, when the sons of God entered in to present themselves unto Yahweh,so the accuser also entered, in their midst.
6 Ora, houve um dia em que os filhos de Deus vieram apresentar-se diante do SENHOR, Satanás veio também entre eles.
7 And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Whence comest thou? And the accuser answered Yahweh, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and wandering about therein.
7 E o SENHOR disse a Satanás: De onde tu vens? Então Satanás respondeu ao SENHOR, e disse: De ir e de vir sobre a terra, e de nela andar para cima e para baixo.
8 And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Hast thou applied thy heart unto my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a man blameless and upright, one revering God and avoiding evil?
8 E o SENHOR disse a Satanás: Tu consideraste o meu servo Jó, que não há ninguém como ele na terra, homem perfeito e íntegro, que teme a Deus e se afasta do mal?
9 And the accuser answered Yahweh, and said, Is it, for nought, that Job revereth God?
9 Então Satanás respondeu ao SENHOR, e disse: Acaso Jó teme a Deus por nada?
10 Hast not, thou thyself, made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? The work of his hands, thou hast blessed, and, his substance, hath broken forth in the land.
10 Tu não fizeste uma cerca sobre ele, e sobre a sua casa, e sobre tudo que ele tem por todos os lados? Tu abençoaste o trabalho de suas mãos e suas posses aumentam na terra.
11 But, in very deed, put forth, I pray thee, thy hand, and smite all that he hath,verily, unto thy face, will he curse thee.
11 Mas estende a tua mão agora, e toca tudo o que ele tem, e ele te amaldiçoará diante da tua face.
12 And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Lo! all that he hath, is in thy hand, only, against himself, do not put forth thy hand. So the accuser went forth from the presence of Yahweh.
12 E o SENHOR disse a Satanás: Eis que tudo o que ele tem está em teu poder; somente sobre ele não estendas a tua mão. Então Satanás se foi da presença do SENHOR.
13 And there came a certain day,when his sons and his daughters were eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their eldest brother.
13 E houve um dia em que seus filhos e suas filhas estavam comendo e bebendo vinho na casa de seu irmão mais velho;
14 And, a messenger, came in unto Job, and said,The oxen, were plowing, and, the asses, feeding beside them;
14 e veio um mensageiro a Jó, e disse: Os bois estavam lavrando, e as jumentas pastando junto a eles;
15 when the Sabeans swooped down, and took them, and, the young men, smote they with the edge of the sword,and escaped am, only I alone, too tell thee.
15 e os sabeus caíram sobre eles, e os levaram; sim, eles mataram os servos ao fio da espada; e só eu escapei para contar-te.
16 Yet was this one speaking, when, another, came in and said,A fire of God, fell out of the heavens, and burned up the sheep and the young men, and consumed them; and escaped am, only I alone, to tell thee.
16 Enquanto ele ainda estava falando, veio também um outro e disse: O fogo de Deus caiu do céu, e queimou as ovelhas e os servos, e os consumiu, e só eu escapei para contar-te.
17 Yet was this one speaking, when, another, came in and said, The Chaldeans, appointed three chiefs, and spread out against the camels, and took them, and, the young men, smote they with the edge of the sword; and escaped am, only I alone, to tell thee.
17 Enquanto ele ainda estava falando, veio também um outro e disse: Os caldeus formaram três bandos, e caíram sobre os camelos, e os carregaram, sim, e mataram os servos ao fio da espada, e só eu escapei para contar-te.
18 Yet was this one speaking, when, another, came in and said,Thy sons and thy daughters, were eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their eldest brother;
18 Enquanto ele ainda estava falando, veio também um outro e disse: Teus filhos e tuas filhas estavam comendo e bebendo vinho na casa do irmão mais velho;
19 when lo! a great wind, came from over the desert, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they died,and escaped am, only I alone, to tell thee.
19 e eis que veio um grande vento do deserto, e atingiu os quatro cantos da casa, e caiu sobre os jovens, e eles estão mortos; e só eu escapei para contar-te.
20 Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell to the earth and worshipped;
20 Então Jó se levantou e rasgou o seu manto, e raspou a sua cabeça, e prostrou-se em terra e adorou;
21 and saidNaked came I forth from the womb of my mother, and naked must I return thither, Yahweh, gave, and, Yahweh, hath taken away,The name of Yahweh be blessed!
21 e disse: Nu saí do útero de minha mãe, e nu retornarei para lá; o SENHOR o deu, e o SENHOR o tomou. Abençoado seja o nome do SENHOR.
22 In all this, Job sinned not, nor imputed folly unto God.
22 Em tudo isto Jó não pecou, nem culpou Deus de maneira tola.
