1 Now, when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heardthat, the Sons of the Exile, were building the temple, unto Yahweh, God of Israel,
1 Os inimigos de Judá e Benjamim souberam que os exilados estavam reconstruindo o templo do S enhor , o Deus de Israel.
2 then drew they near unto Zerubbabel, and unto the ancestral chiefs, and said unto them, Let us build with you, for, like you, we seek your God, and, unto him, have, we, been sacrificing since the days of Esar-haddon, king of Assyria, who brought us up hither.
2 Eles foram a Zorobabel e aos outros chefes de família e disseram: “Queremos participar da construção, pois também adoramos seu Deus, como vocês. Temos oferecido sacrifícios para ele desde que Esar-Hadom, rei da Assíria, nos trouxe para cá”.
3 But Zerubbabel and Joshua and the rest of the ancestral chiefs of Israel, said unto them, It pertaineth not to you and to us , to build a house unto our God,but, we ourselves together, will build unto Yahweh, God of Israel, even as King Cyrus, king of Persia, hath commanded us.
3 Mas Zorobabel, Jesua e os outros chefes de família de Israel responderam: “De maneira nenhuma! Vocês não podem participar desse trabalho. Somente nós construiremos o templo para o S enhor , o Deus de Israel, conforme Ciro, rei da Pérsia, nos ordenou”.
4 Then came it to pass, that, the people of the land, were weakening the hands of the people of Judah,and troubling them in building;
4 Então os habitantes da região tentaram desanimar e amedrontar o povo de Judá, para que não continuassem a construção.
5 and hiring against them counselors, to overturn their purpose,all the days of Cyrus, king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius, king of Persia.
5 Subornaram agentes para trabalhar contra eles e frustrar seus planos. Isso prosseguiu durante todo o reinado de Ciro, rei da Pérsia, até que Dario, rei da Pérsia, subiu ao poder.
6 And, in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they an accusation, against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
6 Anos depois, quando Xerxes começou a reinar, os inimigos de Judá escreveram uma carta de acusação contra o povo de Judá e de Jerusalém.
7 And, in the days of Artaxerxes, wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his associates, unto Artaxerxes, king of Persia,and, the writing of the letter, was written in Aramean, and was to be interpreted as Aramean.
7 Mais tarde, durante o reinado de Artaxerxes, rei da Pérsia, os inimigos de Judá, liderados por Bislão, Mitredate e Tabeel, enviaram a Artaxerxes uma carta em aramaico, que foi traduzida para o rei.
8 Rehum holder of judicial authority, and Shimshai the scribe, wrote a certain letter against Jerusalem,to Artaxerxes the king, thus:
8 O comandante Reum e o secretário da corte Sinsai escreveram a carta, na qual apresentaram ao rei Artaxerxes um relatório negativo sobre Jerusalém.
9 Then Rehum holder of judicial authority, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their associates,the Dinaites and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites;
9 Saudaram o rei em nome de todos os seus colegas: os juízes e as autoridades locais, o povo de Tarpel, os persas, os babilônios e o povo de Ereque e de Susã (isto é, Elão).
10 and the rest of the peoples, whom the great and noble Osnappar hath exiled, and set in the city of Samaria,and the rest Beyond the River, and so forth:
10 Também enviaram saudações do restante do povo que o grande e renomado Assurbanípal havia deportado e estabelecido em Samaria e em todas as terras vizinhas da província a oeste do rio Eufrates.
11 This, is a copy of the letter which they sent unto himunto Artaxerxes the king,Thy servants, the men Beyond the River and so forth:
11 Esta é uma cópia da carta: “Ao rei Artaxerxes, de seus súditos leais na província a oeste do rio Eufrates.
12 Be it known unto the king,that, the Jews who came up from thee unto us, are come to Jerusalem,the rebellious and wicked city, are they building, and, the walls, have they finished, and, the foundations, will they repair.
12 “Informamos ao rei que os judeus que saíram da Babilônia para Jerusalém estão reconstruindo esta cidade rebelde e má. Já restauraram os alicerces e, em breve, terminarão os muros.
13 Now be it known to the king, that, if this city, be built, and, the walls thereof, be finished, neither, tribute, excise, nor toll, will they render, and so, the revenue of the kings, shalt thou damage.
13 É bom o rei saber que, se esta cidade for reconstruída e seus muros forem concluídos, haverá grande prejuízo para o tesouro real, pois os judeus se recusarão a lhe pagar tributos, impostos e taxas.
14 Now, because the salt of the palace we have eaten, the impoverishment of the king, it is not meet for us to see,therefore have we sent, and certified the king;
14 “Visto que somos seus súditos leais e não desejamos vê-lo desonrado desse modo, enviamos ao rei estas informações.
15 so that search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers, so shalt thou find out in the book of recordsand shalt ascertain, that, this city, is a rebellious city, and one that causeth damage unto kings and provinces, and that, rebellion, have they been wont to cause in the midst thereof since the days of age-past time,for this cause, was this city laid waste.
15 Sugerimos que se faça uma busca no registro de seus antepassados, no qual o rei descobrirá como esta cidade foi rebelde em outros tempos. Aliás, foi destruída por causa de sua longa e problemática história de rebelião contra os reis e as nações que a dominavam.
16 We do certify the king that, if, this city, be built, and, the walls thereof, finished, for that very reason, portion Beyond the River, shalt thou have none.
16 Declaramos ao rei que, se esta cidade for reconstruída e seus muros forem concluídos, o rei perderá a província a oeste do rio Eufrates”.
17 The king sent, a message, unto Rehum holder of judicial authority, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their associates, who were dwelling in Samaria, and the rest Beyond the River, Peace and so forth.
17 O rei Artaxerxes enviou a seguinte resposta: “Ao comandante Reum, ao secretário da corte Sinsai, e a seus companheiros em Samaria e em toda a província a oeste do rio Eufrates. Saudações.
18 The letter which ye sent unto us, was distinctly read before me;
18 “A carta que vocês enviaram foi traduzida e lida para mim.
19 And, from me, went forth an edict, and they have made search and found, that, this city, since the days of age-past time, against kings, hath lifted herself up,and, sedition and rebellion, have been made therein;
19 Ordenei que se fizesse uma busca nos registros e descobri que, de fato, Jerusalém tem sido, ao longo dos anos, foco de insurreição contra vários reis. Aliás, rebeliões e revoltas são normais ali.
20 and, mighty kings, have there been over Jerusalem, and bearing rule everywhere Beyond the River,and, tribute, excise, and toll, have been given to them.
20 Reis poderosos governaram sobre Jerusalém e sobre toda a província a oeste do rio Eufrates e receberam tributos, impostos e taxas.
21 Now, issue ye an edict, to forbid these men,that, this city, be not built, until, from me, the edict be issued.
21 Portanto, deem ordens para que esses homens parem seu trabalho. A cidade não deve ser reconstruída enquanto eu não mandar.
22 Beware, then, of failure to do thus,wherefore should the damage increase, to inflict loss on the kings?
22 Sejam diligentes e não descuidem desse assunto, pois não devemos permitir que a situação prejudique os interesses do rei”.
23 Then, when, the copy of the letter of Artaxerxes the king, had been read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their associates, they journeyed in haste to Jerusalem, unto the Jews, and forbade them, with arm and force.
23 Quando a carta do rei Artaxerxes foi lida para Reum, Sinsai e seus companheiros, eles foram depressa a Jerusalém e, fazendo uso de força, obrigaram os judeus a parar a construção.
24 Then ceased the work of the house of God, which was in Jerusalem,yea it did cease, until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
24 Assim, a obra no templo de Deus em Jerusalém foi interrompida e ficou parada até o segundo ano do reinado de Dario, rei da Pérsia.
