1 And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha,See, we pray thee, the place wherein we sit before thee, is too strait for us.
1 Certo dia, os membros do grupo de profetas disseram a Eliseu: “Como vê, este lugar onde nos reunimos é pequeno demais.
2 Let us go, we pray thee, as far as the Jordan, and fetch from thence every man a single beam, and let us make us a place wherein we may sit. And he saidGo ye.
2 Vamos descer ao rio Jordão, onde há muitos troncos, e construir ali um lugar para nos reunirmos”. “Está bem”, disse Eliseu. “Podem ir.”
3 Then said oneBe content, we pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he saidI myself, will go.
3 “Venha conosco”, sugeriu um deles. “Eu irei”, disse ele.
4 So he went with them,and, when they came to the Jordan, they cut down wood.
4 E foi com eles. Quando chegaram ao Jordão, começaram a derrubar árvores.
5 And it came to pass, as one was felling a branch, that, the axe-head, fell into the water, so he made outcry and saidAlas! my lord, for, it, was borrowed!
5 Enquanto um deles cortava um tronco, a parte de ferro do machado caiu no rio. “Ai, meu senhor!”, gritou. “O machado era emprestado!”
6 And the man of God saidWhere fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a piece of wood and cast it in thither, and the iron did swim.
6 “Onde caiu?”, perguntou o homem de Deus. Quando mostraram o lugar para Eliseu, ele cortou um galho e o jogou na água, e fez o ferro do machado flutuar.
7 And he saidTake it up to thee. So he put forth his hand, and took it.
7 “Pegue-o”, disse Eliseu. E o homem estendeu a mão e o pegou.
8 Now, the king of Syria, was making war against Israel,so he took counsel with his servants, sayingIn such and such a place, shall be my encampment.
8 Quando o rei da Síria estava em guerra contra Israel, consultava seus oficiais e dizia: “Posicionaremos nossas tropas em tal lugar”.
9 The man of God, therefore, sent unto the king of Israel, sayingBeware of passing by this place,for, thither, are the Syrians coming down.
9 De imediato, o homem de Deus advertia o rei de Israel: “Não se aproxime de tal lugar, pois os sírios planejam posicionar suas tropas ali”.
10 So the king of Israel sent unto the place whereof the man of God had spoken to him and warned him, and was on his guard there,not once nor twice
10 E o rei de Israel mandava um aviso para o lugar indicado pelo homem de Deus. Várias vezes ele advertiu o rei de que ficasse alerta naqueles lugares.
11 Then was the heart of the king of Syria disquieted concerning this thing,and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not tell me, who of our men are for the king of Israel?
11 Furioso com essa situação, o rei sírio reuniu seus oficiais e perguntou: “Qual de vocês anda informando o rei de Israel sobre meus planos?”.
12 Then said one of his servants, None, my lord O king,but, Elisha, the prophet, who is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words which thou speakest in thy bed-chamber.
12 “Ó meu senhor, o rei, não somos nós”, respondeu um dos oficiais. “Eliseu, o profeta de Israel, revela ao rei de Israel até as palavras que o senhor diz em seus aposentos!”
13 And he saidGo, and see where he is, that I may send and take him. And it was told him, sayingLo! in Dothan.
13 O rei ordenou: “Vão e descubram onde ele está, para que eu mande capturá-lo!”. Então lhe informaram: “Eliseu está em Dotã”.
14 Therefore sent he thitherhorses and chariots, and a strong force,and they came in by night, and encompassed the city.
14 Assim, certa noite, o rei da Síria mandou um grande exército com muitos carros de guerra e cavalos para cercar a cidade.
15 And, when the attendant of the man of God arose early and went forth, lo! a force surrounding the city, with horses and chariots. Then said his young man unto himAlas! my lord, what shall we do?
15 Na manhã seguinte, o servo do homem de Deus se levantou bem cedo. Ao sair, viu que havia soldados, cavalos e carros de guerra por toda parte. “Ai, meu senhor, o que faremos agora?”, exclamou o servo.
16 And he saidDo not fear,for, more, are, they who are with us, than, they who are with them.
16 “Não tenha medo!”, disse Eliseu. “Pois do nosso lado há muitos mais que do lado deles!”
17 Then prayed Elisha, and said, O Yahweh! open, I beseech thee, his eyes, that he may see. And Yahweh opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and lo! the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire, round about Elisha.
17 Então Eliseu orou: “Ó S enhor , abre os olhos dele, para que veja”. O S enhor abriu os olhos do servo, e ele viu as colinas ao redor de Eliseu cheias de cavalos e carruagens de fogo.
18 And, when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto Yahweh, and saidSmite, I beseech thee, this people, with sudden blindness. And he smote them with sudden blindness, according to the word of Elisha.
18 Quando os sírios avançaram na direção de Eliseu, ele orou: “Ó S enhor , faze que fiquem cegos”. E o S enhor fez que ficassem cegos, conforme Eliseu havia pedido.
19 Then Elisha said unto themThis, is not the way, neither is, this, the city, follow me, that I may lead you unto the man, whom ye would secure! So he led them to Samaria.
19 Então Eliseu saiu e lhes disse: “Vocês tomaram o caminho errado! Esta não é a cidade certa! Sigam-me, e eu os levarei até o homem que procuram”. Então ele os guiou à cidade de Samaria.
20 And it came to pass, when they had entered Samaria, that Elisha said, O Yahweh! open the eyes of these men, that they may see! And Yahweh opened their eyes, and they saw, and lo! they were in the midst of Samaria!
20 Assim que entraram em Samaria, Eliseu orou: “Ó S enhor , agora abre os olhos deles, para que vejam”. O S enhor abriu os olhos deles, e descobriram que estavam no meio de Samaria.
21 Then said the king of Israel unto Elisha, when he saw them,Shall I smiteshall I smite, my father?
21 Quando o rei de Israel os viu, perguntou a Eliseu: “Devo matá-los, meu senhor? Devo matá-los?”.
22 And he saidThou shalt not smite. Them whom thou hadst taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow, wouldst, thou, have been smiting? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go their way unto their lord.
22 “Claro que não!”, respondeu Eliseu. “Eles não são prisioneiros que você capturou na batalha. Dê-lhes comida e bebida e mande-os de volta para casa, para o senhor deles.”
23 And he made for them a great feast, and, when they had eaten and drunk, he let them go, and they went their way unto their lord. So then, troops of Syrians came again, no more, into the land of Israel.
23 Então o rei lhes ofereceu um grande banquete e os mandou de volta para casa, para o senhor deles. Depois disso, os invasores sírios não invadiram mais a terra de Israel.
24 But it came to pass, after this, that Ben-hadad king of Syria gathered together all his host,and came up and laid siege against Samaria.
24 Algum tempo depois, porém, Ben-Hadade, rei da Síria, reuniu todo o seu exército e cercou Samaria.
25 And there came to be, a great famine, in Samaria, and lo! they continued the siege against it,until an asss head was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and one pint of doves dung for five pieces of silver.
25 Como resultado, houve grande fome na cidade. O cerco durou tanto tempo que uma cabeça de jumento era vendida por 960 gramas de prata, e um terço de litro de esterco de pombo, por 60 gramas de prata.
26 And so it was that, as the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman, made outcry unto him, sayingSave, my lord, O king!
26 Um dia, quando o rei de Israel caminhava pelos muros da cidade, uma mulher gritou para ele: “Ó meu senhor, o rei! Por favor, ajude-me!”.
27 And he saidIf Yahweh do not save thee, whence should I save thee? out of the threshing-floor or out of the wine-press?
27 Ele respondeu: “Se o S enhor não a ajudar, o que poderei fazer? Não tenho alimento na eira, nem vinho na prensa de uvas”.
28 And the king said to herWhat aileth thee? And she saidThis woman, said unto meGive thy son, that we may eat him, to-day, and, my son, will we eat to-morrow.
28 Mas depois o rei perguntou: “Qual é o problema?”. Ela respondeu: “Esta mulher me disse: ‘Vamos comer o seu filho hoje, e amanhã comeremos o meu’.
29 So we cooked my son, and did eat him,and I said unto her, on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him; But she had hid her son.
29 Então cozinhamos meu filho e o comemos. No dia seguinte, eu disse a ela: ‘Mate seu filho para que o comamos’, mas ela o havia escondido”.
30 And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes, while yet he was passing by upon the wall,so the people looked, and lo! sackcloth upon his flesh, within.
30 Quando o rei ouviu isso, rasgou as roupas. E, enquanto ele caminhava pelos muros, o povo viu que, por baixo do manto, ele usava pano de saco junto à pele.
31 And he saidSo, let God do to me, and, so, let him add,if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remain on him, to-day!
31 Então o rei jurou: “Que Deus me castigue severamente se eu não separar a cabeça de Eliseu de seus ombros ainda hoje!”.
32 Now, Elisha, being seated in his house, and, the elders, seated with him,when he had sent a man from before him, ere yet the messenger could come in unto him, he himself, said unto the eldersDo ye see how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away my head? See! when the messenger is coming in, close ye the door, and press him back with the door, is not the sound of his lords feet behind him?
32 Eliseu estava sentado em sua casa com as autoridades de Israel quando o rei mandou um mensageiro até ele. Antes, porém, que o mensageiro chegasse, Eliseu disse às autoridades: “O filho do assassino enviou um homem para cortar minha cabeça. Quando o mensageiro chegar, fechem a porta e não o deixem entrar. Logo ouviremos os passos de seu senhor atrás dele”.
33 While yet he was speaking with them, lo! the messenger, coming down unto him,and he said,Lo! this, is a calamity from Yahweh, why should I wait for Yahweh, any longer?
33 Enquanto Eliseu ainda falava, o mensageiro chegou e comunicou a mensagem do rei: “Toda essa desgraça vem do S enhor ! Por que devo continuar a esperar no S enhor ?”.
