1 Then came the men of Kiriath-jearim and fetched up the ark of Yahweh, and brought it into the house of Abinadab, in the hill,and, Eleazar his son, hallowed they, to guard the ark of Yahweh.
1 Então os homens de Quiriate-Jearim foram buscar a arca do S enhor . Eles a levaram até a casa de Abinadabe, numa colina, e consagraram seu filho Eleazar para tomar conta da arca do S enhor .
2 And so it was, that, from the day the ark came to dwell in Kiriath-jearim, the days multiplied, and became twenty years,and all the house of Israel went mourning after Yahweh.
2 A arca permaneceu em Quiriate-Jearim por muito tempo: vinte anos no total. Durante esse período, todo o Israel lamentava à espera de alguma ação do S enhor .
3 And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If, with all your heart, ye are returning unto Yahweh, then put away the gods of the foreigner out of your midst, and the Ashtorethsand firmly set your heart towards Yahweh, and serve him, alone, that he may deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
3 Então Samuel disse a todo o povo de Israel: “Se, de fato, vocês desejam de todo o coração voltar ao S enhor , livrem-se de seus deuses estrangeiros e de suas imagens de Astarote. Voltem o coração para o S enhor e obedeçam somente a ele; então ele os livrará das mãos dos filisteus”.
4 So the sons of Israel put away the Baals, and the Ashtoreths,and served Yahweh, alone.
4 Assim, os israelitas se desfizeram de suas imagens de Baal e de Astarote e serviram somente ao S enhor .
5 And Samuel said, Gather all Israel unto Mizpah,that I may pray for you, unto Yahweh.
5 Então Samuel lhes disse: “Reúnam todo o Israel em Mispá, e eu orarei ao S enhor por vocês”.
6 So they gathered themselves unto Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before Yahweh, and fasted on that day, and said, there, We have sinned against Yahweh. And Samuel judged the sons of Israel in Mizpah.
6 Eles se reuniram em Mispá e tiraram água do poço e a derramaram diante do S enhor . Também jejuaram o dia todo e confessaram que haviam pecado contra o S enhor . (Foi em Mispá que Samuel se tornou juiz em Israel.)
7 And, when the Philistines heard that the sons of Israel had gathered themselves together unto Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel,and, when the sons of Israel heard it, they shrank with fear, from the face of the Philistines.
7 Quando os governantes filisteus ouviram que os israelitas haviam se reunido em Mispá, mobilizaram seu exército e avançaram. Ao saber que os filisteus se aproximavam, os israelitas ficaram muito assustados.
8 And the sons of Israel said unto Samuel, Do not turn in silence from us, from making outcry unto Yahweh our God,that he would save us out of the hand of the Philistines.
8 “Não pare de clamar ao S enhor , nosso Deus, para que ele nos salve dos filisteus!”, imploraram a Samuel.
9 So Samuel took one sucking lamb, and offered it up, as an entire ascending-sacrifice unto Yahweh,and Samuel made outcry unto Yahweh, for Israel, and Yahweh answered him.
9 Então Samuel escolheu um cordeiro que ainda mamava e o ofereceu ao S enhor como holocausto. Suplicou ao S enhor em favor de Israel, e o S enhor o atendeu.
10 And, when Samuel was offering up the ascending-sacrifice, the Philistines, drew near to fight against Israel,but Yahweh thundered with a great noise throughout that day, over the Philistines, and confused them, and they were smitten before Israel.
10 Enquanto Samuel oferecia o holocausto, os filisteus chegaram para atacar Israel. Naquele dia, porém, o S enhor falou do céu com voz poderosa de trovão, provocando pânico entre os filisteus, e eles foram derrotados diante dos israelitas.
11 And the men of Israel went forth out of Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines,and smote them as far as under Beth-car.
11 Os soldados de Israel os perseguiram desde Mispá até um lugar abaixo de Bete-Car, matando-os ao longo do caminho.
12 And Samuel took a certain stone, and set it between Mizpah and Yeshanah, and called the name thereof Eben-ezer,and said, Hitherto, hath Yahweh helped us.
12 Então Samuel pegou uma pedra grande e a colocou entre as cidades de Mispá e Jesana. Deu à pedra o nome de Ebenézer, pois disse: “Até aqui o S enhor nos ajudou!”.
13 So the Philistines were subdued, and, no more, came within the boundary of Israel,and the hand of Yahweh was against the Philistines, all the days of Samuel.
13 Assim, os filisteus foram derrotados e não voltaram a invadir Israel por algum tempo. Durante toda a vida de Samuel, a mão do S enhor esteve contra os filisteus.
14 And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even as far as Gath; even the boundaries thereof, did Israel rescue out of the hand of the Philistines,thus came there to be peace between Israel and the Amorites.
14 As cidades israelitas que os filisteus tinham conquistado entre Ecrom e Gate foram devolvidas a Israel, junto com o restante do território que os filisteus haviam tomado. E houve paz entre Israel e os amorreus naqueles dias.
15 And Samuel judged Israel, all the days of his life.
15 Samuel continuou como juiz em Israel pelo resto de sua vida.
16 And he used to take his journey, from year to year, and go round to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpah,and used to judge Israel, at all these places.
16 A cada ano, viajava pelo território e julgava o povo de Israel em três locais: primeiro em Betel, depois em Gilgal e, por fim, em Mispá.
17 And, his returning, was to Ramah, for, there, was his house, and, there, judged he Israel,so he built there an altar unto Yahweh.
17 Então voltava para sua casa em Ramá, de onde liderava Israel como juiz. Ali Samuel construiu um altar ao S enhor .
