1 Now, the Philistines, having taken the ark of God,brought it in from Eben-ezer, unto Ashdod.
1 Os filisteus apoderaram-se, pois, da arca de Deus e levaram-na de Eben-Ezer para Azot.
2 And, when the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon,and placed it by the side of Dagon.
2 Tomaram a arca de Deus e meteram-na no templo de Dagon, colocando-a junto do ídolo.
3 And, when they of Ashdod rose early on the morrow and entered into the house of Dagon, they looked and lo! Dagon, was lying prostrate on his face to the earth, before the ark of Yahweh,so they took Dagon and restored him to his place.
3 No dia seguinte, levantando-se pela manhã, os habitantes de Azot viram Dagon estendido com o rosto por terra diante da arca do Senhor. Levantaram o ídolo e repuseram-no no seu lugar.
4 And, when they rose up early in the morning of the morrow, lo! Dagon, was lying prostrate on his face to the earth, before the ark of Yahwehand, the head of Dagon, and both the palms of his hands, had been cut off against the threshold, only, Dagon himself, was left to him.
4 Na manhã seguinte, ao se levantarem, encontraram {de novo} Dagon estendido com o rosto por terra diante da arca do Senhor; a cabeça do deus e suas duas mãos estavam desprendidas e jaziam perto do limiar. Dele só restou o tronco.
5 For this cause, do not the priests of Dagon, nor any that enter into the house of Dagon, tread upon the threshold of Dagon, in Ashdod,until this day.
5 É por isto que os sacerdotes de Dagon e todos os que entram no seu templo em Azot, evitam ainda hoje pôr o pé no limiar da porta.
6 Then was the hand of Yahweh heavy against them of Ashdod, and he astounded them,and smote with tumours Ashdod and her bounds.
6 A mão do Senhor pesava sobre os habitantes de Azot; ele os devastou e os feriu de hemorróidas na cidade e no seu território.
7 And, when the men of Ashdod saw that, so, it was, then kept they saying, Let not the ark of the God of Israel abide with us, for, hard, is his hand upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
7 Vendo isto, os habitantes de Azot exclamaram: A arca do Deus de Israel não ficará conosco, porque a sua mão pesou sobre nós e sobre Dagon, nosso Deus.
8 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and saidWhat shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they said: To Gath, let the ark of the God of Israel go round. So they took round the ark of the God of Israel.
8 Mandaram mensageiros que convocassem todos os príncipes dos filisteus e perguntaram-lhes: Que faremos nós da arca do Deus de Israel? Eles responderam: Transportem-na a Get. E a arca do Deus de Israel foi levada para ali.
9 And so it was, after they had taken it round, then was the hand of Yahweh against the city, with an exceeding great consternation, and he smote the men of the city, from the least, even unto the greatest,and they brake out with tumours.
9 Logo que o fizeram, a mão do Senhor foi contra a cidade, causando nela um grande terror. Feriu os habitantes desde o menor até ao maior com muitos tumores de hemorróidas.
10 Then sent they the ark of God to Ekron,and so it was, when the ark of God entered Ekron, that the Ekronites made outcry, sayingThey have brought round unto me the ark of the God of Israel, to slay me, and my people!
10 Mandaram então a arca de Deus para Acaron. Chegando ela ali, os acaronitas clamaram, dizendo: Trouxeram-nos a arca do Deus de Israel, para nos matar como todo o povo!
11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and saidSend away the ark of the God of Israel, and restore it to its own place, that it slay not me, and my people. For there had come a deadly consternation, throughout all the city, heavy exceedingly, was the hand of God there.
11 Convocaram todos os príncipes dos filisteus e disseram-lhes: Devolvei a arca do Deus de Israel; que ela volte para o seu lugar, e não nos faça perecer com todo o povo.
12 And, the men who died not, were smitten with the tumours,so the cry of the city for help, ascended the heavens.
12 Reinava na cidade um pavor mortal, e a mão de Deus fazia-se sentir rudemente. Aqueles que escapavam à morte, eram feridos de hemorróidas, e da cidade subia até ao céu um clamor angustiado.
