1 There was a man in the land of ‘Uz, Job was his name; And this man was perfect and upright, and fearing God, and eschewing evil.
1 Houve um homem na terra de Uz, cujo nome era Jó; e aquele homem era perfeito e íntegro, e alguém que temia a Deus, e afastava-se do mal.
2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
2 E nasceram-lhe sete filhos e três filhas.
3 And his cattle consisted of seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she–asses, and he had a very great store of servants: so that this man was greater than all the sons of the east.
3 Sua posse também era de sete mil ovelhas, três mil camelos, quinhentas juntas de bois e quinhentas jumentas; e muitíssimos os seus servos, de modo que este homem era maior de todos os homens do Oriente.
4 And his sons used to go and prepare a feast in the house of every one on his day; and they sent and invited their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
4 E seus filhos iam e festejavam em suas casas, cada um no seu dia; e mandavam chamar as suas três irmãs para comerem e beberem com eles.
5 And it happened, when the days of the feast were gone round, that Job sent and sanctified them, and he then rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt–offerings according to the number of all of them; for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and have renounced God in their heart. In this manner used Job to do all the time.
5 E assim era que, quando os dias de seus banquetes terminavam, enviava Jó, e os santificava, e se levantava de madrugada, e oferecia ofertas queimadas de acordo com o número de todos eles; porque Jó dizia: Pode ser que meus filhos tenham pecado e amaldiçoado a Deus em seus corações. Assim fazia Jó continuamente.
6 Now it happened on a certain day, when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, that the Accuser also came in the midst of them.
6 Ora, houve um dia em que os filhos de Deus vieram apresentar-se diante do SENHOR, Satanás veio também entre eles.
7 Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Whence comest thou? And the Accuser answered the Lord, and said, From roaming over the earth, and from wandering through it.
7 E o SENHOR disse a Satanás: De onde tu vens? Então Satanás respondeu ao SENHOR, e disse: De ir e de vir sobre a terra, e de nela andar para cima e para baixo.
8 Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Hast thou directed thy attention toward my servant Job; for there is none like him on the earth, a man perfect and upright, who feareth God, and escheweth evil?
8 E o SENHOR disse a Satanás: Tu consideraste o meu servo Jó, que não há ninguém como ele na terra, homem perfeito e íntegro, que teme a Deus e se afasta do mal?
9 Then answered the Accuser the Lord, and said, Is it for nought that Job feareth God?
9 Então Satanás respondeu ao SENHOR, e disse: Acaso Jó teme a Deus por nada?
10 Behold, thou hast indeed placed a fence about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side: the work of his hands hast thou blessed, and his cattle are far spread out in the land.
10 Tu não fizeste uma cerca sobre ele, e sobre a sua casa, e sobre tudo que ele tem por todos os lados? Tu abençoaste o trabalho de suas mãos e suas posses aumentam na terra.
11 But stretch only forth thy hand and touch all that he hath, and see whether he will not renounce thee to thy face.
11 Mas estende a tua mão agora, e toca tudo o que ele tem, e ele te amaldiçoará diante da tua face.
12 Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Behold, all that is his be in thy power; only against himself shalt thou not stretch forth thy hand. The Accuser went thereupon away from the presence of the Lord.
12 E o SENHOR disse a Satanás: Eis que tudo o que ele tem está em teu poder; somente sobre ele não estendas a tua mão. Então Satanás se foi da presença do SENHOR.
13 And it happened on a certain day, when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their first–born brother,
13 E houve um dia em que seus filhos e suas filhas estavam comendo e bebendo vinho na casa de seu irmão mais velho;
14 That a messenger came unto Job, and said, The oxen were ploughing, and the she–asses were feeding beside them:
14 e veio um mensageiro a Jó, e disse: Os bois estavam lavrando, e as jumentas pastando junto a eles;
15 When the Sabeans made an incursion, and took them away, and the young men they slew with the edge of the sword; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
15 e os sabeus caíram sobre eles, e os levaram; sim, eles mataram os servos ao fio da espada; e só eu escapei para contar-te.
16 This one was yet speaking, when another came, and said, A fire of God fell from heaven, and burnt among the sheep and the young men, and consumed them; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
16 Enquanto ele ainda estava falando, veio também um outro e disse: O fogo de Deus caiu do céu, e queimou as ovelhas e os servos, e os consumiu, e só eu escapei para contar-te.
17 This one was yet speaking, when another came, and said, The Chaldeans posted themselves in three divisions, and made an inroad against the camels, and took them away, and the young men they slew with the edge of the sword; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
17 Enquanto ele ainda estava falando, veio também um outro e disse: Os caldeus formaram três bandos, e caíram sobre os camelos, e os carregaram, sim, e mataram os servos ao fio da espada, e só eu escapei para contar-te.
18 While this one was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their first–born brother:
18 Enquanto ele ainda estava falando, veio também um outro e disse: Teus filhos e tuas filhas estavam comendo e bebendo vinho na casa do irmão mais velho;
19 When, behold, a violent wind came from the direction of the wilderness, and struck against the four corners of the house, so that it fell upon the young men, and they died; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
19 e eis que veio um grande vento do deserto, e atingiu os quatro cantos da casa, e caiu sobre os jovens, e eles estão mortos; e só eu escapei para contar-te.
20 Then arose Job, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and prostrated himself.
20 Então Jó se levantou e rasgou o seu manto, e raspou a sua cabeça, e prostrou-se em terra e adorou;
21 And he said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; may the name of the Lord be blessed.
21 e disse: Nu saí do útero de minha mãe, e nu retornarei para lá; o SENHOR o deu, e o SENHOR o tomou. Abençoado seja o nome do SENHOR.
22 With all this did Job not sin, and attributed no injustice to God.
22 Em tudo isto Jó não pecou, nem culpou Deus de maneira tola.
