1 There was a man in the land of Uz, Job was his name; And this man was perfect and upright, and fearing God, and eschewing evil.
1 Havia um homem na terra de Uz, cujo nome era Jó; e este era homem sincero, reto e temente a Deus; e desviava-se do mal.
2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
2 E nasceram-lhe sete filhos e três filhas.
3 And his cattle consisted of seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred sheasses, and he had a very great store of servants: so that this man was greater than all the sons of the east.
3 E era o seu gado sete mil ovelhas, e três mil camelos, e quinhentas juntas de bois, e quinhentas jumentas; era também muitíssima a gente ao seu serviço, de maneira que este homem era maior do que todos os do Oriente.
4 And his sons used to go and prepare a feast in the house of every one on his day; and they sent and invited their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
4 E iam seus filhos e faziam banquetes em casa de cada um no seu dia; e enviavam e convidavam as suas três irmãs a comerem e beberem com eles.
5 And it happened, when the days of the feast were gone round, that Job sent and sanctified them, and he then rose up early in the morning, and offered burntofferings according to the number of all of them; for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and have renounced God in their heart. In this manner used Job to do all the time.
5 Sucedia, pois, que, tendo decorrido o turno de dias de seus banquetes, enviava Jó, e os santificava, e se levantava de madrugada, e oferecia holocaustos segundo o número de todos eles; porque dizia Jó: Porventura, pecaram meus filhos e blasfemaram de Deus no seu coração. Assim o fazia Jó continuamente.
6 Now it happened on a certain day, when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, that the Accuser also came in the midst of them.
6 E vindo um dia em que os filhos de Deus vieram apresentar-se perante o Senhor , veio também Satanás entre eles.
7 Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Whence comest thou? And the Accuser answered the Lord, and said, From roaming over the earth, and from wandering through it.
7 Então, o Senhor disse a Satanás: De onde vens? E Satanás respondeu ao Senhor e disse: De rodear a terra e passear por ela.
8 Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Hast thou directed thy attention toward my servant Job; for there is none like him on the earth, a man perfect and upright, who feareth God, and escheweth evil?
8 E disse o Senhor a Satanás: Observaste tu a meu servo Jó? Porque ninguém há na terra semelhante a ele, homem sincero, e reto, e temente a Deus, e desviando-se do mal.
9 Then answered the Accuser the Lord, and said, Is it for nought that Job feareth God?
9 Então, respondeu Satanás ao Senhor e disse: Porventura, teme Jó a Deus debalde?
10 Behold, thou hast indeed placed a fence about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side: the work of his hands hast thou blessed, and his cattle are far spread out in the land.
10 Porventura, não o cercaste tu de bens a ele, e a sua casa, e a tudo quanto tem? A obra de suas mãos abençoaste, e o seu gado está aumentado na terra.
11 But stretch only forth thy hand and touch all that he hath, and see whether he will not renounce thee to thy face.
11 Mas estende a tua mão, e toca- lhe em tudo quanto tem, e verás se não blasfema de ti na tua face!
12 Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Behold, all that is his be in thy power; only against himself shalt thou not stretch forth thy hand. The Accuser went thereupon away from the presence of the Lord.
12 E disse o Senhor a Satanás: Eis que tudo quanto tem está na tua mão; somente contra ele não estendas a tua mão. E Satanás saiu da presença do Senhor .
13 And it happened on a certain day, when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their firstborn brother,
13 E sucedeu um dia, em que seus filhos e suas filhas comiam e bebiam vinho na casa de seu irmão primogênito,
14 That a messenger came unto Job, and said, The oxen were ploughing, and the sheasses were feeding beside them:
14 que veio um mensageiro a Jó e lhe disse: Os bois lavravam, e as jumentas pasciam junto a eles;
15 When the Sabeans made an incursion, and took them away, and the young men they slew with the edge of the sword; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
15 e eis que deram sobre eles os sabeus, e os tomaram, e aos moços feriram ao fio da espada; e eu somente escapei, para te trazer a nova.
16 This one was yet speaking, when another came, and said, A fire of God fell from heaven, and burnt among the sheep and the young men, and consumed them; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
16 Estando este ainda falando, veio outro e disse: Fogo de Deus caiu do céu, e queimou as ovelhas e os moços, e os consumiu; e só eu escapei, para te trazer a nova.
17 This one was yet speaking, when another came, and said, The Chaldeans posted themselves in three divisions, and made an inroad against the camels, and took them away, and the young men they slew with the edge of the sword; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
17 Estando ainda este falando, veio outro e disse: Ordenando os caldeus três bandos, deram sobre os camelos, e os tomaram, e aos moços feriram ao fio da espada; e só eu escapei, para te trazer a nova.
18 While this one was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their firstborn brother:
18 Estando ainda este falando veio outro e disse: Estando teus filhos e tuas filhas comendo e bebendo vinho, em casa de seu irmão primogênito,
19 When, behold, a violent wind came from the direction of the wilderness, and struck against the four corners of the house, so that it fell upon the young men, and they died; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
19 eis que um grande vento sobreveio dalém do deserto, e deu nos quatro cantos da casa, a qual caiu sobre os jovens, e morreram; e só eu escapei, para te trazer a nova.
20 Then arose Job, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and prostrated himself.
20 Então, Jó se levantou, e rasgou o seu manto, e rapou a sua cabeça, e se lançou em terra, e adorou,
21 And he said, Naked came I out of my mothers womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; may the name of the Lord be blessed.
21 e disse: Nu saí do ventre de minha mãe e nu tornarei para lá; o Senhor o deu e o Senhor o tomou; bendito seja o nome do Senhor .
22 With all this did Job not sin, and attributed no injustice to God.
22 Em tudo isto Jó não pecou, nem atribuiu a Deus falta alguma.
