1 And the famine [was] sore in the land.
1 A fome se agravou na terra de Canaã.
2 And it came to pass when they had eaten up the wheat which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.
2 Quando os cereais que eles haviam trazido do Egito estavam para acabar, Jacó disse a seus filhos: “Voltem e comprem um pouco mais de mantimento para nós”.
3 And Judah spoke unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face unless your brother [is] with you.
3 Judá, porém, respondeu: “O homem estava falando sério quando nos advertiu: ‘Vocês não me verão novamente se não trouxerem seu irmão’.
4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food:
4 Se o senhor enviar Benjamim conosco, desceremos e compraremos mais mantimento,
5 But if thou wilt not send [him], we will not go down; for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face unless your brother [is] with you.
5 mas, se não deixar Benjamim ir, nós também não iremos. Lembre-se de que o homem disse: ‘Vocês não me verão novamente se não trouxerem seu irmão’”.
6 And Israel said, Why did ye such evil unto me [as] to tell the man that ye had another brother?
6 “Por que vocês foram tão cruéis comigo?”, lamentou-se Jacó. “Por que disseram ao homem que tinham outro irmão?”
7 And they said, The man asked us expressly of our state and of our kindred, saying, [Is] your father yet alive? Have ye [another] brother? And we told him according to the tenor of these words. Could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?
7 “Ele fez uma porção de perguntas sobre nossa família”, responderam. “Quis saber: ‘Seu pai ainda está vivo? Vocês têm outro irmão?’. Nós apenas respondemos às perguntas dele. Como poderíamos imaginar que ele diria: ‘Tragam seu irmão’?”
8 Then Judah said unto Israel, his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live, and not die, both we and thou [and] also our little ones.
8 Judá disse a seu pai: “Deixe o rapaz ir comigo e partiremos. Do contrário, todos nós morreremos de fome, e não apenas nós, mas também nossos pequeninos.
9 I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him; if I do not bring him unto thee and set him before thee, then let me bear the sin for ever;
9 Garanto pessoalmente a segurança dele. O senhor pode me responsabilizar se eu não o trouxer de volta. Carregarei a culpa para sempre.
10 for if we had not lingered, surely by now we would have returned this second time.
10 Se não tivéssemos perdido todo esse tempo, poderíamos ter ido e voltado duas vezes”.
11 Then their father Israel answered them, If [it must be] so now, do this: take of the best fruits of the land in your vessels and take the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, aromas, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds.
11 Por fim, Jacó, seu pai, lhes disse: “Se não há outro jeito, pelo menos façam o seguinte. Coloquem na bagagem os melhores produtos desta terra: bálsamo, mel, especiarias e mirra, pistache e amêndoas, e levem de presente para o homem.
12 And take double money in your hands and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks; carry [it] again in your hand; peradventure it [was] an oversight.
12 Levem também o dobro do dinheiro que foi devolvido, pois alguém deve tê-lo colocado nos sacos por engano.
13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man.
13 Depois, peguem seu irmão e voltem àquele homem.
14 And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may let your other brother go, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved [of my sons], I am bereaved.
14 Que o Deus Todo-poderoso lhes conceda misericórdia quando estiverem diante daquele homem, para que ele liberte Simeão e deixe Benjamim voltar. Mas, se devo perder meus filhos, que assim seja”.
15 Then the men took the present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin, and rose up and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
15 Então os homens pegaram os presentes de Jacó e o dobro do dinheiro e partiram com Benjamim. Por fim, chegaram ao Egito e se apresentaram a José.
16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring [these] men home and slay an animal and make ready; for [these] men shall dine with me at noon.
16 Quando José viu Benjamim com eles, disse ao administrador de sua casa: “Estes homens almoçarão comigo ao meio-dia. Leve-os ao palácio, mate um animal e prepare um grande banquete”.
17 And the man did as Joseph bade, and the man brought the men into Joseph's house.
17 O homem fez conforme José ordenou e os levou ao palácio de José.
18 And the men were afraid because they were brought into Joseph's house, and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks the first time we are brought in here that he may seek occasion against us and fall upon us and take us for bondmen and our asses.
18 Quando os irmãos viram que estavam sendo levados à casa de José, ficaram apavorados. “É por causa do dinheiro que alguém colocou de volta nos sacos da outra vez que estivemos aqui”, disseram uns aos outros. “Ele planeja nos acusar de roubo e, depois, nos prender, nos tornar escravos e tomar nossos jumentos.”
19 And they came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they spoke with him at the door of the house
19 À entrada do palácio, os irmãos se dirigiram ao administrador de José e lhe disseram:
20 and said, my lord, we came indeed down the first time to buy food;
20 “Ouça, senhor. Viemos ao Egito anteriormente para comprar mantimentos.
21 and it came to pass when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, each man's money [was] in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; and we have brought it again in our hand.
21 No caminho de volta para casa, paramos para pernoitar e abrimos os sacos. Descobrimos que o dinheiro de cada um, a quantia exata que havíamos pago, estava na boca do saco. Trouxemos o dinheiro de volta. Aqui está.
22 And we brought down other money in our hands to buy food; we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.
22 Também trouxemos mais dinheiro para comprar mantimentos. Não fazemos ideia de quem colocou o dinheiro nos sacos”.
23 And he said, Peace [be] to you, fear not; your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.
23 “Fiquem tranquilos”, disse o administrador. “Não tenham medo. Seu Deus, o Deus de seu pai, deve ter colocado esse tesouro nos sacos. Tenho certeza de que recebi seu pagamento.” Depois disso, soltou Simeão e o levou até onde eles estavam.
24 And the man brought the men into Joseph's house and gave [them] water, and they washed their feet, and he gave their asses fodder.
24 Em seguida, o administrador os conduziu para dentro do palácio de José. Deu-lhes água para lavar os pés e providenciou ração para seus jumentos.
25 And they made ready the present [waiting] until Joseph came at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there.
25 Quando foram avisados que almoçariam lá, os irmãos prepararam os presentes para a chegada de José ao meio-dia.
26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which [they had] in their hand in the house and bowed themselves to him to the earth.
26 Assim que José chegou em casa, entregaram-lhe os presentes que haviam trazido e curvaram-se até o chão diante dele.
27 And he asked them of [their] welfare and said, [Is] your father well, the old man of whom ye spoke? [Is] he yet alive?
27 Depois de cumprimentá-los, José quis saber: “Como está seu pai, o senhor idoso do qual me falaram? Ainda está vivo?”.
28 And they answered, Thy servant our father [is] in good health, he [is] yet alive. And they bowed down their heads and made obeisance.
28 “Sim”, responderam eles. “Nosso pai, seu servo, ainda está vivo e vai bem.” E curvaram-se mais uma vez.
29 And he lifted up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, [Is] this your younger brother, of whom ye spoke unto me? And he said, God be merciful unto thee, my son.
29 Então José olhou para seu irmão Benjamim, o filho de sua mãe, e perguntou: “Este é o irmão mais novo de que vocês me falaram?”. E disse a Benjamim: “Deus seja bondoso com você, meu filho”.
30 Then Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother; and he sought [where] to weep, and he entered into [his] chamber and wept there.
30 Muito emocionado por causa do irmão, José saiu depressa da sala. Foi para o quarto, onde chorou.
31 And he washed his face and went out and refrained himself and said, Serve bread.
31 Depois de lavar o rosto, voltou mais controlado e ordenou: “Tragam a comida!”.
32 And they served for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, who ate with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians may not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that [is] an abomination unto the Egyptians.
32 José foi servido em sua própria mesa, e seus irmãos, em uma mesa separada. Os egípcios que comiam com José, por sua vez, foram servidos em outra mesa, pois os egípcios desprezavam os hebreus e se recusavam a comer com eles.
33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth; and the men marvelled one at another.
33 José disse a cada um dos irmãos onde deviam sentar-se e, para espanto deles, colocou-os ao redor da mesa em ordem de idade, do mais velho para o mais novo.
34 And he took [and sent] portions unto them from before him; but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were drunk with him.:
34 Mandou encher os pratos deles com comida de sua própria mesa, e deram a Benjamim uma porção cinco vezes maior que a dos outros. E eles comeram e beberam à vontade com José.
