1 Now when Jacob saw that there was food in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why are ye looking upon one another?
1 Quando Jacó soube que no Egito havia cereais, disse a seus filhos: “Por que vocês estão aí parados, olhando uns para os outros?
2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is food in Egypt; go down there and buy for us from there that we may live, and not die.
2 Ouvi dizer que há cereais no Egito. Desçam até lá e comprem cereais em quantidade suficiente para nos mantermos vivos. Do contrário, morreremos”.
3 And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy wheat in Egypt.
3 Então os dez irmãos mais velhos de José desceram ao Egito para comprar cereais.
4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph's brother, with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure disaster befall him.
4 Mas Jacó não deixou Benjamim, o irmão mais novo de José, ir com eles, pois tinha medo de que algum mal lhe acontecesse.
5 And the sons of Israel came to buy among those that came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
5 Os filhos de Jacó chegaram ao Egito junto com outros para comprar mantimentos, porque também havia fome em Canaã.
6 And Joseph [was] the lord over the land, [and] he [it was] that sold [the wheat] to all the people of the land; and Joseph's brethren came and bowed down themselves before him [with] their faces to the earth.
6 Uma vez que José era governador do Egito e o encarregado de vender cereais a todos, foi a ele que seus irmãos se dirigiram. Quando chegaram, curvaram-se diante dele com o rosto no chão.
7 And when Joseph saw his brethren, he knew them, but made himself strange unto them and spoke roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Where have you come from? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.
7 José reconheceu os irmãos de imediato, mas fingiu não saber quem eram e lhes perguntou com aspereza: “De onde vocês vêm?”. “Da terra de Canaã”, responderam eles. “Viemos comprar mantimentos.”
8 And Joseph knew his brethren but they did not know him.
8 Embora José tivesse reconhecido seus irmãos, eles não o reconheceram.
9 Then Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them and said unto them, Ye [are] spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.
9 José se lembrou dos sonhos que tivera a respeito deles muitos anos antes e lhes disse: “Vocês são espiões! Vieram para descobrir os pontos fracos de nossa terra”.
10 And they said unto him, No, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.
10 “Não, meu senhor!”, responderam eles. “Seus servos vieram apenas para comprar mantimentos.
11 We [are] all one man's sons; we are men of [the] truth, thy servants have never been spies.
11 Somos todos irmãos, membros da mesma família. Somos homens honestos, meu senhor, e não espiões!”
12 And he said unto them, No, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.
12 Mas José insistiu: “São espiões, sim! Vieram para descobrir os pontos fracos de nossa terra”.
13 And they said, Thy servants [are] twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest [is] this day with our father, and one [is] not.
13 Eles disseram: “Senhor, na verdade, nós, seus servos, éramos doze irmãos, todos filhos de um homem que vive na terra de Canaã. Nosso irmão mais novo está em casa com o pai, e um de nossos irmãos já não está conosco.”
14 And Joseph said unto them, That [is it] that [which] I spoke unto you, saying, Ye [are] spies:
14 José, porém, continuou a insistir: “Como eu disse, vocês são espiões!
15 Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth from here unless your youngest brother comes here.
15 Mas há uma forma de verificar sua história. Juro pela vida do faraó que vocês só deixarão o Egito quando seu irmão mais novo vier para cá.
16 Send one of you and let him bring your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison that your words may be proved, whether [there is any] truth in you; or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye [are] spies.
16 Um de vocês deve buscá-lo. Os outros ficarão presos aqui. Então veremos se sua história é verdadeira ou não. Pela vida do faraó, se não tiverem um irmão mais novo, saberei com certeza que são espiões”.
17 And he put them all together into prison for three days.
17 Então José os colocou na prisão por três dias.
18 And Joseph said unto them the third day, Do this and live, [for] I fear God.
18 No terceiro dia, José lhes disse: “Sou um homem temente a Deus. Façam o que direi e viverão.
19 If ye [are] men of [the] truth, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison; go ye, carry food for the famine of your houses
19 Se são mesmo homens honestos, escolham um de seus irmãos para continuar preso. Os demais podem voltar para casa com cereais para seus parentes que estão passando fome.
20 but bring your youngest brother unto me, so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.
20 Tragam-me, porém, seu irmão mais novo. Com isso, provarão que estão dizendo a verdade e não morrerão”. Eles concordaram e,
21 And they said one to another, We [are] truly guilty concerning our brother in that we saw the anguish of his soul when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.
21 conversando entre si, disseram: “É evidente que estamos sendo castigados por aquilo que fizemos a José tanto tempo atrás. Vimos sua angústia quando ele implorou por sua vida, mas nós o ignoramos. Por isso estamos nesta situação difícil”.
22 Then Reuben answered them, saying, Did I not speak unto you, saying, Do not sin against the young man, and ye would not hear? Therefore, behold, his blood is also required.
22 Rúben disse: “Não lhes falei que não pecassem contra o rapaz? Mas vocês não quiseram me ouvir. Agora, temos de prestar contas pelo sangue dele!”.
23 And they did not know that Joseph understood [them], for he spoke unto them by an interpreter.
23 Não sabiam, porém, que José os entendia, pois falava com eles por meio de um intérprete.
24 And he turned himself about from them and wept and returned to them again and spoke with them and took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.
24 José se afastou dos irmãos e começou a chorar. Quando se recompôs, voltou a falar com eles. Escolheu Simeão e mandou amarrá-lo diante dos demais.
25 Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with wheat and to restore each man's money into his sack and to give them provisions for the way; and thus it was done unto them.
25 Em seguida, José ordenou que seus servos enchessem de cereais os sacos que os irmãos haviam trazido e, em segredo, devolvessem o pagamento, colocando o dinheiro na boca de cada saco. Também mandou que lhes dessem mantimentos para a viagem, e assim fizeram.
26 And they laded their asses with the wheat and departed from there.
26 Os irmãos colocaram os sacos de cereal sobre seus jumentos e partiram de volta para casa.
27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass fodder in the inn, he saw his money; for, behold, it [was] in his sack's mouth.
27 Contudo, quando um deles abriu a bagagem a fim de pegar cereal para seu jumento, encontrou o dinheiro na boca do saco.
28 And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, behold, [it is] even in my sack. And their heart failed [them], and they were afraid, saying one to another, What [is] this [that] God has done unto us?
28 “Vejam só!”, exclamou para seus irmãos. “Devolveram meu dinheiro; está aqui no saco!” O coração deles desfaleceu e, tremendo, disseram uns aos outros: “O que Deus fez conosco?”.
29 And they came unto Jacob, their father, unto the land of Canaan and told him all that had befallen them, saying,
29 Quando os irmãos chegaram à casa de Jacó, seu pai, na terra de Canaã, relataram-lhe tudo que havia acontecido com eles.
30 The man, [who is] the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us and took us for spies of the country.
30 Disseram: “O homem que governa o país falou conosco asperamente e nos acusou de sermos espiões em sua terra,
31 And we said unto him, We [are] men of [the] truth; we have never been spies.
31 mas nós lhe garantimos: ‘Somos homens honestos, e não espiões.
32 We [are] twelve brethren, sons of our father; one [is] not, and the youngest [is] this day with our father in the land of Canaan.
32 Somos doze irmãos, filhos do mesmo pai. Um de nossos irmãos já não está conosco, e o mais novo está em casa com nosso pai, na terra de Canaã’.
33 And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby I shall know that ye [are] men of [the] truth; leave one of your brethren [here] with me and take [food for] the famine of your households and go
33 “Então o homem que governa o país disse: ‘Saberei com certeza se vocês são homens honestos da seguinte forma: deixem um de seus irmãos comigo e voltem para casa levando cereais para seus parentes que estão passando fome.
34 and bring your youngest brother unto me; then I shall know that ye [are] not spies, but [that] ye [are] men of [the] truth; [thus] I will deliver you your brother, and ye shall trade in the land.
34 Tragam-me, porém, seu irmão mais novo e saberei que são homens honestos, e não espiões. Então eu lhes devolverei seu irmão, e vocês poderão negociar livremente nesta terra’”.
35 And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, each man's bundle of money [was] in his sack; and when [both] they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.
35 Ao esvaziarem os sacos, viram que dentro de cada um havia uma bolsa com o dinheiro do pagamento pelos cereais. Os irmãos e o pai ficaram apavorados quando viram as bolsas de dinheiro.
36 And Jacob, their father, said unto them, Ye have bereaved me [of my sons]: Joseph [is] not, and Simeon [is] not, and ye will take Benjamin [away]; all these things are upon me.
36 Jacó disse: “Vocês estão tirando meus filhos de mim! José se foi, Simeão não está aqui, e agora querem levar Benjamim também. Tudo está contra mim!”.
37 And Reuben spoke unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I do not bring him to thee; deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.
37 Então Rúben disse ao pai: “Se eu não trouxer Benjamim de volta, o senhor pode matar meus dois filhos. Eu me responsabilizo por ele e prometo trazê-lo de volta”.
38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left; if [some] disaster should befall him by the way in which ye go, then shall ye bring my gray hairs with sorrow down to Sheol.:
38 Jacó, porém, respondeu: “Meu filho não descerá com vocês. Seu irmão José morreu, e Benjamim é tudo que me resta. Se alguma coisa acontecesse com ele na viagem, vocês me mandariam velho e infeliz para a sepultura”.
