1 After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.

2 And Job spoke, and said:

3 Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night wherein it was said: 'A man-child is brought forth.'
3 “Maldito o dia em que nasci! Maldita a noite em que disseram: ‘Já nasceu! É homem!’
4 Let that day be darkness; let not God inquire after it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.
4 Que aquele dia vire escuridão! Que Deus, lá do alto, não se importe com ele, e que nunca mais a luz o ilumine!
5 Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own; let a cloud dwell upon it; let all that maketh black the day terrify it.
5 Que a escuridão e as trevas o dominem; que as nuvens o cubram e apaguem a luz do sol!
6 As for that night, let thick darkness seize upon it; let it not rejoice among the days of the year; let it not come into the number of the months.
6 Que aquela noite fique sempre escura e que desapareça do calendário!
7 Lo, let that night be desolate; let no joyful voice come therein.
7 Que seja solitária e triste aquela noite, e que nela não se escutem gritos de alegria!
8 Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to rouse up leviathan.
8 Que seja amaldiçoada pelos feiticeiros, aqueles que têm poder sobre o monstro Leviatã !
9 Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it behold the eyelids of the morning;
9 Que escureçam as estrelas da sua manhã; que ela espere a luz, e a luz não venha; e que a sua madrugada não chegue,
10 Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid trouble from mine eyes.
10 pois ela deixou que minha mãe me desse à luz e não me poupou de todo este sofrimento!
11 Why died I not from the womb? Why did I not perish at birth?
11 “Por que não nasci morto? Por que não morri ao nascer?
12 Why did the knees receive me? And wherefore the breasts, that I should suck?
12 Por que a minha mãe me segurou no colo? Por que me deu o seio e me amamentou?
13 For now should I have lain still and been quiet; I should have slept; then had I been at rest--
13 Se eu tivesse morrido naquele momento, agora estaria dormindo, descansando em paz.
14 With kings and counsellors of the earth, who built up waste places for themselves;
14 Estaria com reis e altas autoridades que reconstruíram palácios antigos
15 Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver;
15 ou estaria com governadores que encheram as suas casas de ouro e de prata.
16 Or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants that never saw light.
16 Se a minha mãe tivesse tido um aborto, às escondidas, eu não teria existido e seria como as crianças que nunca viram a luz do dia.
17 There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary are at rest.
17 Na sepultura acaba a agitação dos maus, e ali repousam os que estão cansados.
18 There the prisoners are at ease together; they hear not the voice of the taskmaster.
18 Ali os prisioneiros descansam juntos e já não ouvem mais os gritos do capataz.
19 The small and great are there alike; and the servant is free from his master.
19 Ali estão os importantes e os humildes, e os escravos ficam livres dos seus donos.
20 Wherewith is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul--
20 “Por que os infelizes continuam vendo a luz? Por que deixar que vivam os que têm o coração amargurado?
21 Who long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;
21 Eles esperam a morte, e ela não vem, embora a desejem mais do que riquezas.
22 Who rejoice unto exultation, and are glad, when they can find the grave?--
22 Eles ficam muito alegres e felizes quando por fim descem para a sepultura.
23 To a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?
23 Deus os faz caminhar às cegas e os cerca de todos os lados.
24 For my sighing cometh instead of my food, and my roarings are poured out like water.
24 “Em vez de comer, eu choro, e os meus gemidos se derramam como água.
25 For the thing which I did fear is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of hath overtaken me.
25 Aquilo que eu temia foi o que aconteceu, e o que mais me dava medo me atingiu.
26 I was not at ease, neither was I quiet, neither had I rest; but trouble came.
26 Não tenho paz, nem descanso, nem sossego; só tenho agitação.”
