1 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
1 Ora, havia um certo homem enfermo, chamado Lázaro, de Betânia, da aldeia de Maria e de sua irmã Marta.
2 (Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was sick.)
2 (Era aquela Maria que ungiu o Senhor com unguento, e secou os seus pés com os seus cabelos, cujo irmão, Lázaro, estava enfermo).
3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, behold, the one yoʋ love is sick.”
3 Portanto, suas irmãs enviaram até ele dizendo: Senhor, eis que está enfermo aquele que tu amas.
4 But when Jesus heard this, he said,
4 Quando Jesus ouviu isso, ele disse: Esta enfermidade não é para morte, mas para glória de Deus, para que o Filho de Deus seja glorificado por ela.
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, her sister Mary, and Lazarus.
5 Ora, Jesus amava a Marta, e a sua irmã, e a Lázaro.
6 But when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two more days.
6 Ouvindo, pois, que ele estava enfermo, ficou ainda dois dias no lugar onde ele estava.
7 After that he said to the disciples,
7 Depois disso, então, ele diz aos seus discípulos: Vamos outra vez para a Judeia.
8 The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just recently seeking to stone yoʋ, and yet you are going there again?”
8 Seus discípulos lhe disseram: Mestre, recentemente os judeus procuravam apedrejar-te, e tu vais para lá novamente?
9 Jesus answered,
9 Jesus respondeu: Não há doze horas no dia? Se algum homem andar de dia, ele não tropeça, porque ele vê a luz deste mundo.
10 — ausente —
10 Mas se um homem andar de noite, ele tropeça, porque nele não há luz.
11 After saying this, he said to them,
11 Essas coisas ele falou, e depois disso ele lhes disse: Nosso amigo Lázaro dorme, mas eu vou, para que eu possa despertá-lo do sono.
12 His disciples said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
12 Disseram-lhe, então, os seus discípulos: Senhor, se dorme, ele ficará bom.
13 (They thought Jesus was speaking about natural sleep, but he was actually speaking about Lazarus' death.)
13 Todavia Jesus havia falado de sua morte, mas eles pensavam que falava do repouso do sono.
14 Then Jesus told them plainly,
14 Então, Jesus disse-lhes claramente: Lázaro está morto.
15 — ausente —

16 Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to his fellow disciples, “Let us go too, so that we may die with him.”

17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.
17 Quando Jesus chegou, encontrou Lázaro já há quatro dias no sepulcro.
18 Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,
18 Ora, Betânia estava perto de Jerusalém, cerca de quinze estádios.
19 and many of the Jews had joinedthe women who were with Martha and Mary, to console them about their brother.
19 E muitos dos judeus tinham ido consolar a Marta e a Maria, acerca de seu irmão.
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary remained seated in the house.
20 Ouvindo, então, Marta que Jesus vinha, foi ao seu encontro. Mas Maria ficou assentada em casa.
21 Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if yoʋ had been here, my brother would not have died.
21 Então, disse Marta a Jesus: Senhor, se tu estivesses aqui, meu irmão não teria morrido.
22 But even now I know that God will give yoʋ whatever yoʋ ask of him.”
22 Mas eu sei, que agora mesmo, tudo quanto pedires a Deus, Deus te concederá.
23 Jesus said to her,
23 Disse-lhe Jesus: Teu irmão há de ressuscitar.
24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
24 Disse-lhe Marta: Eu sei que há de ressuscitar na ressurreição do último dia.
25 Jesus said to her,
25 Disse-lhe Jesus: Eu sou a ressurreição, e a vida; quem crê em mim, ainda que esteja morto, ele viverá;
26 — ausente —
26 e todo aquele que vive e crê em mim nunca morrerá. Crês tu isto?
27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord, I have come to believe that yoʋ are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
27 Disse-lhe ela: Sim, Senhor; eu creio que tu és o Cristo, o Filho de Deus, que havia de vir ao mundo.
28 After saying this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for yoʋ.”
28 E, tendo ela dito isso, seguiu o seu caminho, e chamou secretamente a Maria, sua irmã, dizendo: O Mestre está aqui e te chama.
29 When Mary heard this, she rose quickly and went to him.
29 Assim que ela ouviu isso, levantou-se depressa, e foi até ele.
30 (Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, butwas in the place where Martha had met him.)
30 Ora, Jesus ainda não tinha chegado à aldeia, mas estava no lugar onde Marta o encontrara.
31 When the Jews who were in the house with Mary, consoling her, saw her rise quickly and go out, they followed her,saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
31 Os judeus, pois, que estavam com ela na casa e a consolavam, vendo que Maria se levantara e saíra apressadamente, seguiram-na, dizendo: Ela vai ao sepulcro para chorar ali.
32 When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if yoʋ had been here, my brother would not have died.”
32 Tendo, pois, Maria chegado onde Jesus estava e vendo-o, ela lançou-se aos seus pés, dizendo-lhe: Senhor, se tu estivesses aqui, meu irmão não teria morrido.
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and troubled.
33 Quando Jesus, pois, a viu chorar, e choravam também os judeus que vinham com ela, comoveu-se em espírito e conturbou-se,
34 He said,They said to him, “Lord, come and see.”
34 e disse: Onde o pusestes? Eles disseram-lhe: Senhor, vem e vê.
35 Jesus wept.
35 Jesus chorou.
36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”
36 Disseram, então, os judeus: Vede como ele o amava!
37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have also kept this man from dying?”
37 E alguns deles disseram: Não podia este homem, que abriu os olhos ao cego, fazer também com que este homem não morresse?
38 Deeply moved once more, Jesus came to the tomb. (It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.)
38 Jesus, pois, novamente comovido em si mesmo, foi ao sepulcro. Era uma caverna e tinha uma pedra posta sobre ela.
39 Jesus said,Martha, the sister of the man who had died, said to him, “Lord, there is already a stench, for it is the fourth day.”
39 Disse Jesus: Tirai a pedra. Marta, irmã daquele que estava morto, disse-lhe: Senhor, a essa altura ele cheira mal, porque ele está morto há quatro dias.
40 Jesus said to her,
40 Disse-lhe Jesus: Eu não te disse que, se tu creres, verás a glória de Deus?
41 So they took away the stonefrom where the dead man was lying. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said,
41 Então, eles tiraram a pedra do lugar onde jazia o morto. E Jesus, levantando seus olhos, disse: Pai, eu te agradeço, por me haveres ouvido.
42 — ausente —
42 Eu sei que sempre me ouves, mas por causa da multidão que está ao redor eu disse isso, para que possam crer que tu me enviaste.
43 After saying this, he cried out with a loud voice,
43 E, tendo dito isso, clamou em alta voz: Lázaro, vem para fora.
44 Then the man who had died came out, his feet and his hands bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them,
44 E saiu o que estivera morto, amarrado nos pés e nas mãos com faixas; e a sua face envolta em um lenço. Disse-lhes Jesus: Desatai-o, e deixai-o ir.
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.
45 Então, muitos dentre os judeus que tinham vindo a Maria, e que haviam visto as coisas que Jesus fizera, creram nele.
46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told themwhat Jesus had done.
46 Mas alguns deles foram pelo seu caminho até os fariseus, e lhes contaram as coisas que Jesus havia feito.
47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a meeting of the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we going to do? For this man is doing many signs.
47 Então, reuniram-se os principais sacerdotes e os fariseus em conselho, dizendo: O que faremos? Pois este homem faz muitos milagres.
48 If we allow him to continue like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away our holy place and our nation.”
48 Se o deixarmos assim sozinho, todos os homens crerão nele; e virão os romanos e tirar-nos-ão o nosso lugar e a nação.
49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You do not know anything,
49 E um deles, chamado Caifás, que era sumo sacerdote naquele ano, lhes disse: Vós não entendeis nada,
50 nor do you consider that it is better forus to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation perish.”
50 nem considerais que nos convém que um homem morra pelo povo e que não pereça toda a nação.
51 (He said this not of his own accord, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
51 Ora, isso não disse ele por si mesmo; mas, sendo o sumo sacerdote naquele ano, profetizou que Jesus havia de morrer pela nação;
52 and not only for the nation, but also to gather together and unite the children of God scattered abroad.)
52 e não somente por aquela nação, mas também para congregar num só corpo os filhos de Deus que estavam dispersos.
53 So from that day they plottedtogether to kill him.
53 Desde aquele dia, pois, eles tomavam conselho para o matarem.
54 Therefore Jesus no longer went around openly among the Jews. Instead, he departed from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, where hespent time withhis disciples.
54 Jesus, portanto, já não andava publicamente entre os judeus, mas retirou-se dali para a terra junto do deserto, para uma cidade chamada Efraim, e ali continuava com os seus discípulos.
55 Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many people went up to Jerusalem from the countryside to purify themselves before the Passover.
55 E estava próxima a Páscoa dos judeus; e dessa região subiram muitos a Jerusalém, antes da Páscoa, para se purificarem.
56 They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple courts, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?”
56 Então eles buscavam por Jesus, e falavam entre si, estando no templo: Que vos parece? Não virá ele à festa?
57 (Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had givenan order that if anyone knew where Jesus was, he should report it, so that they could arrest him.)
57 Ora, os principais sacerdotes e os fariseus tinham dado ordem para que, se algum homem soubesse onde ele estava, ele deveria mostrar, para que o prendessem.
