1 When Paul and his companions had traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.
1 E passando por Anfípolis e Apolônia, chegaram a Tessalônica, onde havia uma sinagoga de judeus.
2 As was his custom, Paul went in to them, and for three Sabbaths he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
2 E Paulo, como tinha por costume, foi ter com eles; e por três sábados disputou com eles sobre as Escrituras,
3 explaining and presenting evidence that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, saying, “This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ.”
3 Expondo e demonstrando que convinha que o Cristo padecesse e ressuscitasse dentre os mortos. E este Jesus, que vos anuncio, dizia ele, é o Cristo.
4 Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of the devout Greeks and quite a few prominent women.
4 E alguns deles creram, e ajuntaram-se com Paulo e Silas; e também uma grande multidão de gregos religiosos, e não poucas mulheres principais.
5 But the Jewswho refused to believe rounded up some evil men from the marketplace and formed a mob, setting the city in an uproar. They attacked Jason's house, seeking to bring Paul and Silas out to the public assembly.
5 Mas os judeus desobedientes, movidos de inveja, tomaram consigo alguns homens perversos, dentre os vadios e, ajuntando o povo, alvoroçaram a cidade, e assaltando a casa de Jasom, procuravam trazê-los para junto do povo.
6 But when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some other brothers to the city officials, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also,
6 E, não os achando, trouxeram Jasom e alguns irmãos à presença dos magistrados da cidade, clamando: Estes que têm alvoroçado o mundo, chegaram também aqui;
7 and Jason has welcomed them. They all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”
7 Os quais Jasom recolheu; e todos estes procedem contra os decretos de César, dizendo que há outro rei, Jesus.
8 And they stirred up the crowd and the city officials who heard these things.
8 E alvoroçaram a multidão e os principais da cidade, que ouviram estas coisas.
9 But when the city officials had received a security bond from Jason and the others, they released them.
9 Tendo, porém, recebido satisfação de Jasom e dos demais, os soltaram.
10 As soon as it was night the brothers sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived, they went to the synagogue of the Jews.
10 E logo os irmãos enviaram de noite Paulo e Silas a Beréia; e eles, chegando lá, foram à sinagoga dos judeus.
11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica, and they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
11 Ora, estes foram mais nobres do que os que estavam em Tessalônica, porque de bom grado receberam a palavra, examinando cada dia nas Escrituras se estas coisas eram assim.
12 As a result, many of them believed, as did quite a few of the Greek women of high standing and the men.
12 De sorte que creram muitos deles, e também mulheres gregas da classe nobre, e não poucos homens.
13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica found out that Paul was proclaiming the word of God in Berea also, they went there as well,agitating the crowds.
13 Mas, logo que os judeus de Tessalônica souberam que a palavra de Deus também era anunciada por Paulo em Beréia, foram lá, e excitaram as multidões.
14 Then the brothers immediately sent Paulaway, as though he were going by sea, but Silas and Timothy remained in Berea.
14 No mesmo instante os irmãos mandaram a Paulo que fosse até ao mar, mas Silas e Timóteo ficaram ali.
15 Those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and after they had received an order for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they departed.
15 E os que acompanhavam Paulo o levaram até Atenas, e, recebendo ordem para que Silas e Timóteo fossem ter com ele o mais depressa possível, partiram.
16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was full of idols.
16 E, enquanto Paulo os esperava em Atenas, o seu espírito se comovia em si mesmo, vendo a cidade tão entregue à idolatria.
17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout Greeks, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.
17 De sorte que disputava na sinagoga com os judeus e religiosos, e todos os dias na praça com os que se apresentavam.
18 Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophersalso conversed with him. Some said, “What is this babbler trying to say?” But others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign deities.” (They said this because he waspreaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.)
18 E alguns dos filósofos epicureus e estóicos contendiam com ele; e uns diziam: Que quer dizer este paroleiro? E outros: Parece que é pregador de deuses estranhos; porque lhes anunciava a Jesus e a ressurreição.
19 So they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is that yoʋ are presenting?
19 E tomando-o, o levaram ao Areópago, dizendo: Poderemos nós saber que nova doutrina é essa de que falas?
20 For yoʋ are bringing some strange things to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.”
20 Pois coisas estranhas nos trazes aos ouvidos; queremos pois saber o que vem a ser isto
21 (Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who dwelt there would spend their time in nothing else but talking aboutand listening to whatever the newest idea might be.)
21 (Pois todos os atenienses e estrangeiros residentes, de nenhuma outra coisa se ocupavam, senão de dizer e ouvir alguma novidade).
22 Paul then stood before the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I see just how religious you are in every way.
22 E, estando Paulo no meio do Areópago, disse: Homens atenienses, em tudo vos vejo um tanto supersticiosos;
23 For as I was going around and closely observing yoʋr objects of worship, I even found an altar that had been inscribed: ‘To an unknown god.’ I proclaim to you thereforethe one whom you worship in ignorance.
23 Porque, passando eu e vendo os vossos santuários, achei também um altar em que estava escrito: AO DEUS DESCONHECIDO. Esse, pois, que vós honrais, não o conhecendo, é o que eu vos anuncio.
24 The God who made the world and everything in it, who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made by hands,
24 O Deus que fez o mundo e tudo que nele há, sendo Senhor do céu e da terra, não habita em templos feitos por mãos de homens;
25 neither is he served bythe hands of men, as though he needed anything. Rather, he himselfcontinually gives life and breath to all mankind.
25 Nem tampouco é servido por mãos de homens, como que necessitando de alguma coisa; pois ele mesmo é quem dá a todos a vida, e a respiração, e todas as coisas;
26 From onebloodline he created every nation of mankind to dwell on the entire face of the earth. He determined theirappointed times and the boundaries of where they would dwell,
26 E de um só sangue fez toda a geração dos homens, para habitar sobre toda a face da terra, determinando os tempos já dantes ordenados, e os limites da sua habitação;
27 so that they might seekthe Lord and perhaps feel their way toward himand find him, though he is not far from any one of us.
27 Para que buscassem ao Senhor, se porventura, tateando, o pudessem achar; ainda que não está longe de cada um de nós;
28 For in him we live and move and have our being, as even some of your own poets have said:
28 Porque nele vivemos, e nos movemos, e existimos; como também alguns dos vossos poetas disseram: Pois somos também sua geração.
29 Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold, silver, or stone, an image formed by the skill and imagination of man.
29 Sendo nós, pois, geração de Deus, não havemos de cuidar que a divindade seja semelhante ao ouro, ou à prata, ou à pedra esculpida por artifício e imaginação dos homens.
30 Therefore, having overlooked the times of ignorance, God now commands all people everywhere to repent,
30 Mas Deus, não tendo em conta os tempos da ignorância, anuncia agora a todos os homens, e em todo o lugar, que se arrependam;
31 because he has set a day on which he is going to judge the world in righteousness by a man he has appointed. He has provided assurance of this to everyone by raising this man from the dead.”
31 Porquanto tem determinado um dia em que com justiça há de julgar o mundo, por meio do homem que destinou; e disso deu certeza a todos, ressuscitando-o dentre os mortos.
32 Now when they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some began to scoff, but others said, “We wish to hear about this from yoʋ again.”
32 E, como ouviram falar da ressurreição dos mortos, uns escarneciam, e outros diziam: Acerca disso te ouviremos outra vez.
33 So Paul departed from them,
33 E assim Paulo saiu do meio deles.
34 but some of the people joined him and believed, among whom were Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
34 Todavia, chegando alguns homens a ele, creram; entre os quais foi Dionísio, areopagita, uma mulher por nome Dâmaris, e com eles outros.
