1 I say then, Hath God cast off his people? Far be it I For I myself am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
1 Pergunto, então: Acaso rejeitou Deus o seu povo? De maneira alguma. Pois eu mesmo sou israelita, descendente de Abraão, da tribo de Benjamim.
2 God hath not cast off his people, which he foreknew. Do ye not know what the Scripture saith in the passage concerning Elijah? how he pleadeth to God against Israel:
2 Deus não repeliu o seu povo, que ele de antemão distinguiu! Desconheceis o que narra a Escritura, no episódio de Elias, quando este se queixava de Israel a Deus:
3 “Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have dug down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they are seeking my life.”
3 Senhor, mataram vossos profetas, destruíram vossos altares. Fiquei apenas eu, e ainda procuram tirar-me a vida {I Rs 19,10}?
4 But what saith the answer of God to him? “I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”
4 Que lhe respondeu a voz divina? Reservei para mim sete mil homens, que não dobraram o joelho diante de Baal {I Rs 19,18}.
5 In the same way then at this present time also there is a remnant, according to the election of grace.
5 É o que continua a acontecer no tempo presente: subsiste um resto, segundo a eleição da graça.
6 And if it is by grace, it is no longer on account of works; otherwise grace ceaseth to be grace; but if it is of works, there is then no grace; otherwise work ceaseth to be work. How is it then?
6 E se é pela graça, já não o é pelas obras; de outra maneira, a graça cessaria de ser graça.
7 What Israel seeketh after, that Israel did not obtain; but the elect obtained it, and the rest were hardened;
7 Conseqüência? Que Israel não conseguiu o que procura. Os escolhidos, estes sim, o conseguiram. Quanto aos mais, foram obcecados,
8 as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of slumber, eyes that were not to see, and ears that were not to hear, unto this day.”
8 como está escrito: Deus lhes deu um espírito de torpor, olhos para que não vejam e ouvidos para que não ouçam, até o dia presente {Dt 29,3}.
9 And David saith, “Let their table become a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling-block, and a recompense to them;
9 Davi também o diz: A mesa se lhes torne em laço, em armadilha, em ocasião de tropeço, em justo castigo!
10 let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see; and bow down their back alway.”
10 A vista se lhes obscureça para não verem! Dobra-lhes o espinhaço sem cessar {Sl 68,23s}!
11 I say then, Did they stumble in order to fall? God forbid! But by their offence salvation is come to the gentiles to excite them to emulation.
11 Pergunto ainda: Tropeçaram acaso para cair? De modo algum. Mas sua queda, tornando a salvação acessível aos pagãos, incitou-os à emulação.
12 But if their offence is the riches of the world, and their loss the riches of the gentiles, how much more will their fullness be?
12 Ora, se o seu pecado ocasionou a riqueza do mundo, e a sua decadência a riqueza dos pagãos, que não fará a sua conversão em massa?!
13 For I am speaking to you gentiles; inasmuch as I am the apostle of the gentiles, I magnify my office,
13 Declaro-o a vós, homens de origem pagã: como apóstolo dos pagãos, eu procuro honrar o meu ministério,
14 that I may, if possible, excite to emulation those who are my flesh, and may save some of them.
14 com o intuito de, eventualmente, excitar à emulação os homens da minha raça e salvar alguns deles.
15 For if the rejection of them is the reconciliation of the world, what will the reception of them be, but life from the dead?
15 Porque, se de sua rejeição resultou a reconciliação do mundo, qual será o efeito de sua reintegração, senão uma ressurreição dentre os mortos?
16 And if the first portion of the dough is holy, so also will be the lump; and if the root is holy, so will be the branches.
16 Se as primícias são santas, também a massa o é; e se a raiz é santa, os ramos também o são.
17 And if some of the branches have been broken off, and thou, a wild olive, hast been grafted in among them, and become a partaker with them of the root and fatness of the olive-tree,
17 Se alguns dos ramos foram cortados, e se tu, oliveira selvagem, foste enxertada em seu lugar e agora recebes seiva da raiz da oliveira,
18 boast not over the branches; for if thou boast, thou dost not bear the root, but the root thee.
18 não te envaideças nem menosprezes os ramos. Pois, se te gloriares, sabe que não és tu que sustentas a raiz, mas a raiz a ti.
19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.
19 Dirás, talvez: Os ramos foram cortados para que eu fosse enxertada.
20 Be it so. It was for their unbelief that they were broken off, and thou standest through thy faith; be not high-minded, but fear.
20 Sem dúvida! É pela incredulidade que foram cortados, ao passo que tu é pela fé que estás firme. Não te ensoberbeças, antes teme.
21 For if God spared the natural branches, take care lest he spare not thee.
21 Se Deus não poupou os ramos naturais, bem poderá não poupar a ti.
22 Behold then the goodness and the severity of God; toward those who fell, severity; but toward thee God's goodness, if thou continue in his goodness; otherwise thou also wilt be cut off.
22 Considera, pois, a bondade e a severidade de Deus: severidade para com aqueles que caíram, bondade para contigo, suposto que permaneças fiel a essa bondade; do contrário, também tu serás cortada.
23 And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in; for God is able to graft them in again.
23 E eles, se não persistirem na incredulidade, serão enxertados; pois Deus é poderoso para enxertá-los de novo.
24 For if thou hast been cut off from an olive-tree wild by nature, and hast against thy nature been ingrafted into a good olive-tree, how much more shall these, the natural branches, be ingrafted into their own olive-stock?
24 Se tu, cortada da oliveira de natureza selvagem, contra a tua natureza foste enxertada em boa oliveira, quanto mais eles, que são naturais, poderão ser enxertados na sua própria oliveira!
25 For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits, that blindness hath to some extent come upon Israel, until the fullness of the gentiles shall have come in.
25 Não quero, irmãos, que ignoreis este mistério, para que não vos gabeis de vossa sabedoria: esta cegueira de uma parte de Israel só durará até que haja entrado a totalidade dos pagãos.
26 And thus will all Israel be saved; as it is written, “There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer; he shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.
26 Então Israel em peso será salvo, como está escrito: Virá de Sião o libertador, apartará de Jacó a impiedade.
27 And this will be my covenant with them, when I shall have taken away their sins.”
27 E esta será a minha aliança com eles, quando eu tirar os seus pecados {Is 59,20s; 27,9}.
28 In regard to the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes; but in regard to God's choice, they are beloved for the fathers' sake.
28 Se, quanto ao Evangelho, eles são inimigos de Deus, para proveito vosso, quanto à eleição eles são muito queridos por causa de seus pais.
29 For in respect to his gifts and his calling, there is no change of purpose with God.
29 Pois os dons e o chamado de Deus são irrevogáveis.
30 For as ye in times past were disobedient to God, but have now obtained mercy through their disobedience,
30 Assim como vós antes fostes desobedientes a Deus, e agora obtivestes misericórdia com a desobediência deles,
31 so they too have now become disobedient, that they also may obtain mercy through the mercy shown to you.
31 assim eles são incrédulos agora, em conseqüência da misericórdia feita a vós, para que eles também mais tarde alcancem, por sua vez, a misericórdia.
32 For God delivered up all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.
32 Deus encerrou a todos esses homens na desobediência para usar com todos de misericórdia.
33 O the depth of the riches, and of the wisdom, and of the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his purposes, and his ways past finding out!
33 Ó abismo de riqueza, de sabedoria e de ciência em Deus! Quão impenetráveis são os seus juízos e inexploráveis os seus caminhos!
34 For “who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been made his counselor?”
34 Quem pode compreender o pensamento do Senhor? Quem jamais foi o seu conselheiro?
35 or “who first gave to him, and shall receive a return?”
35 Quem lhe deu primeiro, para que lhe seja retribuído?
36 For from him, and through him, and to him are all things. To him be the glory for ever! Amen.
36 Dele, por ele e para ele são todas as coisas. A ele a glória por toda a eternidade! Amém.
