1 And the men|strong="H0376" of Ephraim|strong="H0669" said|strong="H0559" unto him, Why hast thou|strong="H4100" served|strong="H6213" us thus|strong="H1697", that thou calledst|strong="H7121" us not, when thou wentest|strong="H1980" to fight|strong="H3898" with the Midianites|strong="H4080"? And they did chide|strong="H7378" with him sharply|strong="H2394".
2 And he said|strong="H0559" unto them, What have I done|strong="H6213" now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning|strong="H5955" of the grapes of Ephraim|strong="H0669" better|strong="H2896" than the vintage|strong="H1210" of Abi-ezer|strong="H0044"?
3 God|strong="H0430" hath delivered|strong="H5414" into your hands|strong="H3027" the princes|strong="H8269" of Midian|strong="H4080", Oreb|strong="H6159" and Zeeb|strong="H2062": and what was I able|strong="H3201" to do|strong="H6213" in comparison of you? Then their anger|strong="H7307" was abated|strong="H7503" toward him, when he had said|strong="H1697" that|strong="H1696".
4 And Gideon|strong="H1439" came|strong="H0935" to Jordan|strong="H3383", and passed over|strong="H5674", he, and the three|strong="H7969" hundred|strong="H3967" men|strong="H0376" that were with him, faint|strong="H5889", yet pursuing|strong="H7291" them.
5 And he said|strong="H0559" unto the men|strong="H0582" of Succoth|strong="H5523", Give|strong="H5414", I pray you, loaves|strong="H3603" of bread|strong="H3899" unto the people|strong="H5971" that follow|strong="H7272" me; for they be faint|strong="H5889", and I am pursuing|strong="H7291" after|strong="H0310" Zebah|strong="H2078" and Zalmunna|strong="H6759", kings|strong="H4428" of Midian|strong="H4080".
6 And the princes|strong="H8269" of Succoth|strong="H5523" said|strong="H0559", Are the hands|strong="H3709" of Zebah|strong="H2078" and Zalmunna|strong="H6759" now in thine hand|strong="H3027", that we should give|strong="H5414" bread|strong="H3899" unto thine army|strong="H6635"?
7 And Gideon|strong="H1439" said|strong="H0559", Therefore when the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* hath delivered|strong="H5414" Zebah|strong="H2078" and Zalmunna|strong="H6759" into mine hand|strong="H3027", then I will tear|strong="H1758" your flesh|strong="H1320" with the thorns|strong="H6975" of the wilderness|strong="H4057" and with briers|strong="H1303".
8 And he went up|strong="H5927" thence to Penuel|strong="H6439", and spake|strong="H1696" unto them likewise|strong="H2063": and the men|strong="H0582" of Penuel|strong="H6439" answered|strong="H6030" him as the men|strong="H0582" of Succoth|strong="H5523" had answered|strong="H6030" him.
9 And he spake|strong="H0559" also unto the men|strong="H0582" of Penuel|strong="H6439", saying|strong="H0559", When I come again|strong="H7725" in peace|strong="H7965", I will break down|strong="H5422" this tower|strong="H4026".
10 Now Zebah|strong="H2078" and Zalmunna|strong="H6759" were in Karkor|strong="H7174", and their hosts|strong="H4264" with them, about fifteen|strong="H2568" thousand|strong="H0505" men, all that were left|strong="H3498" of all the hosts|strong="H4264" of the children|strong="H1121" of the east|strong="H6924": for there fell|strong="H5307" an hundred|strong="H3967" and twenty|strong="H6242" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376" that drew|strong="H8025" sword|strong="H2719".
11 And Gideon|strong="H1439" went up|strong="H5927" by the way|strong="H1870" of them that dwelt|strong="H7931" in tents|strong="H0168" on the east|strong="H6924" of Nobah|strong="H5025" and Jogbehah|strong="H3011", and smote|strong="H5221" the host|strong="H4264": for the host|strong="H4264" was secure|strong="H0983".
12 And when Zebah|strong="H2078" and Zalmunna|strong="H6759" fled|strong="H5127", he pursued|strong="H7291" after|strong="H0310" them, and took|strong="H3920" the two|strong="H8147" kings|strong="H4428" of Midian|strong="H4080", Zebah|strong="H2078" and Zalmunna|strong="H6759", and discomfited|strong="H2729" all the host|strong="H4264".
13 And Gideon|strong="H1439" the son|strong="H1121" of Joash|strong="H3101" returned|strong="H7725" from battle|strong="H4421" before|strong="H4608" the sun|strong="H2775" was up,
14 And caught|strong="H3920" a young man|strong="H5288" of the men|strong="H0582" of Succoth|strong="H5523", and enquired|strong="H7592" of him: and he described|strong="H3789" unto him the princes|strong="H8269" of Succoth|strong="H5523", and the elders|strong="H2205" thereof, even threescore and seventeen|strong="H7657" men|strong="H0376".
15 And he came|strong="H0935" unto the men|strong="H0582" of Succoth|strong="H5523", and said|strong="H0559", Behold Zebah|strong="H2078" and Zalmunna|strong="H6759", with whom ye did upbraid|strong="H2778" me, saying|strong="H0559", Are the hands|strong="H3709" of Zebah|strong="H2078" and Zalmunna|strong="H6759" now in thine hand|strong="H3027", that we should give|strong="H5414" bread|strong="H3899" unto thy men|strong="H0582" that are weary|strong="H3287"?
16 And he took|strong="H3947" the elders|strong="H2205" of the city|strong="H5892", and thorns|strong="H6975" of the wilderness|strong="H4057" and briers|strong="H1303", and with them he taught|strong="H3045" the men|strong="H0582" of Succoth|strong="H5523".
17 And he beat down|strong="H5422" the tower|strong="H4026" of Penuel|strong="H6439", and slew|strong="H2026" the men|strong="H0582" of the city|strong="H5892".
18 Then said|strong="H0559" he unto Zebah|strong="H2078" and Zalmunna|strong="H6759", What|strong="H0375" manner of men|strong="H0582" were they whom ye slew|strong="H2026" at Tabor|strong="H8396"? And they answered|strong="H0559", As thou|strong="H3644" art, so were they; each one|strong="H0259" resembled|strong="H8389" the children|strong="H1121" of a king|strong="H4428".
19 And he said|strong="H0559", They were my brethren|strong="H0251", even the sons|strong="H1121" of my mother|strong="H0517": as the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* liveth|strong="H2416", if|strong="H3863" ye had saved them alive|strong="H2421", I would not slay|strong="H2026" you.
20 And he said|strong="H0559" unto Jether|strong="H3500" his firstborn|strong="H1060", Up|strong="H6965", and slay|strong="H2026" them. But the youth|strong="H5288" drew|strong="H8025" not his sword|strong="H2719": for he feared|strong="H3372", because he was yet a youth|strong="H5288".
21 Then Zebah|strong="H2078" and Zalmunna|strong="H6759" said|strong="H0559", Rise|strong="H6965" thou, and fall|strong="H6293" upon us: for as the man|strong="H0376" is, so is his strength|strong="H1369". And Gideon|strong="H1439" arose|strong="H6965", and slew|strong="H2026" Zebah|strong="H2078" and Zalmunna|strong="H6759", and took away|strong="H3947" the ornaments|strong="H7720" that were on their camels’|strong="H1581" necks|strong="H6677".
22 Then the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" said|strong="H0559" unto Gideon|strong="H1439", Rule|strong="H4910" thou over us, both thou, and thy son|strong="H1121", and thy son’s|strong="H1121" son|strong="H1121" also: for thou hast delivered|strong="H3467" us from the hand|strong="H3027" of Midian|strong="H4080".
23 And Gideon|strong="H1439" said|strong="H0559" unto them, I will not rule|strong="H4910" over you, neither shall my son|strong="H1121" rule|strong="H4910" over you: the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* shall rule|strong="H4910" over you.
24 And Gideon|strong="H1439" said|strong="H0559" unto them, I would desire|strong="H7592" a request|strong="H7596" of you, that ye would give|strong="H5414" me every man|strong="H0376" the earrings|strong="H5141" of his prey|strong="H7998". (For they had golden|strong="H2091" earrings|strong="H5141", because they were Ishmaelites|strong="H3459".)
25 And they answered|strong="H0559", We will willingly|strong="H5414" give|strong="H5414" them. And they spread|strong="H6566" a garment|strong="H8071", and did cast|strong="H7993" therein every man|strong="H0376" the earrings|strong="H5141" of his prey|strong="H7998".
26 And the weight|strong="H4948" of the golden|strong="H2091" earrings|strong="H5141" that he requested|strong="H7592" was a thousand|strong="H0505" and seven|strong="H7651" hundred|strong="H3967" shekels of gold|strong="H2091"; beside ornaments|strong="H7720", and collars|strong="H5188", and purple|strong="H0713" raiment|strong="H0899" that was on the kings|strong="H4428" of Midian|strong="H4080", and beside the chains|strong="H6060" that were about their camels’|strong="H1581" necks|strong="H6677".
27 And Gideon|strong="H1439" made|strong="H6213" an ephod|strong="H0646" thereof, and put|strong="H3322" it in his city|strong="H5892", even in Ophrah|strong="H6084": and all Israel|strong="H3478" went thither a whoring|strong="H2181" after|strong="H0310" it: which thing became a snare|strong="H4170" unto Gideon|strong="H1439", and to his house|strong="H1004".
28 Thus was Midian|strong="H4080" subdued|strong="H3665" before|strong="H6440" the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478", so that they lifted up|strong="H5375" their heads|strong="H7218" no more|strong="H3254". And the country|strong="H0776" was in quietness|strong="H8252" forty|strong="H0705" years|strong="H8141" in the days|strong="H3117" of Gideon|strong="H1439".
29 And Jerubbaal|strong="H3378" the son|strong="H1121" of Joash|strong="H3101" went|strong="H3212" and dwelt|strong="H3427" in his own house|strong="H1004".
30 And Gideon|strong="H1439" had threescore and ten|strong="H7657" sons|strong="H1121" of his body|strong="H3409" begotten|strong="H3318": for he had many|strong="H7227" wives|strong="H0802".
31 And his concubine|strong="H6370" that was in Shechem|strong="H7927", she also bare|strong="H3205" him a son|strong="H1121", whose name|strong="H8034" he called|strong="H7760" Abimelech|strong="H0040".
32 And Gideon|strong="H1439" the son|strong="H1121" of Joash|strong="H3101" died|strong="H4191" in a good|strong="H2896" old age|strong="H7872", and was buried|strong="H6912" in the sepulchre|strong="H6913" of Joash|strong="H3101" his father|strong="H0001", in Ophrah|strong="H6084" of the Abi-ezrites|strong="H0033".
33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon|strong="H1439" was dead|strong="H4191", that the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" turned again|strong="H7725", and went a whoring|strong="H2181" after|strong="H0310" Baalim|strong="H1168", and made|strong="H7760" Baal-berith|strong="H1170" their god|strong="H0430".
34 And the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" remembered|strong="H2142" not the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* their God|strong="H0430", who had delivered|strong="H5337" them out of the hands|strong="H3027" of all their enemies|strong="H0341" on every side|strong="H5439":
35 Neither shewed|strong="H6213" they kindness|strong="H2617" to the house|strong="H1004" of Jerubbaal|strong="H3378", namely, Gideon|strong="H1439", according to all the goodness|strong="H2896" which he had shewed|strong="H6213" unto Israel|strong="H3478".
