Jonas 1

King James (Authorized) Version (ENG-KJV2006)

Now the word|strong="H1697" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* came unto Jonah|strong="H3124" the son|strong="H1121" of Amittai|strong="H0573", saying|strong="H0559",

Arise|strong="H6965", go|strong="H3212" to Nineveh|strong="H5210", that great|strong="H1419" city|strong="H5892", and cry|strong="H7121" against it; for their wickedness|strong="H7451" is come up|strong="H5927" before|strong="H6440" me.

But Jonah|strong="H3124" rose up|strong="H6965" to flee|strong="H1272" unto Tarshish|strong="H8659" from the presence|strong="H6440" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and went down|strong="H3381" to Joppa|strong="H3305"; and he found|strong="H4672" a ship|strong="H0591" going|strong="H0935" to Tarshish|strong="H8659": so he paid|strong="H5414" the fare|strong="H7939" thereof, and went down|strong="H3381" into it, to go|strong="H0935" with them unto Tarshish|strong="H8659" from the presence|strong="H6440" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.

But the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* sent out|strong="H2904" a great|strong="H1419" wind|strong="H7307" into the sea|strong="H3220", and there was a mighty|strong="H1419" tempest|strong="H5591" in the sea|strong="H3220", so that the ship|strong="H0591" was like|strong="H2803" to be broken|strong="H7665".

Then the mariners|strong="H4419" were afraid|strong="H3372", and cried|strong="H2199" every man|strong="H0376" unto his god|strong="H0430", and cast forth|strong="H2904" the wares|strong="H3627" that were in the ship|strong="H0591" into the sea|strong="H3220", to lighten|strong="H7043" it of them. But Jonah|strong="H3124" was gone down|strong="H3381" into the sides|strong="H3411" of the ship|strong="H5600"; and he lay|strong="H7901", and was fast asleep|strong="H7290".

So the shipmaster|strong="H7227" came|strong="H7126" to him, and said|strong="H0559" unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper|strong="H7290"? arise|strong="H6965", call|strong="H7121" upon thy God|strong="H0430", if so be that God|strong="H0430" will think|strong="H6245" upon us, that we perish|strong="H0006" not.

And they said|strong="H0559" every one|strong="H0376" to his fellow|strong="H7453", Come|strong="H3212", and let us cast|strong="H5307" lots|strong="H1486", that we may know|strong="H3045" for whose cause|strong="H7945" this evil|strong="H7451" is upon us. So they cast|strong="H5307" lots|strong="H1486", and the lot|strong="H1486" fell|strong="H5307" upon Jonah|strong="H3124".

Then said|strong="H0559" they unto him, Tell|strong="H5046" us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil|strong="H7451" is upon us; What is thine occupation|strong="H4399"? and whence|strong="H0370" comest|strong="H0935" thou? what is thy country|strong="H0776"? and of what people|strong="H5971" art thou?

And he said|strong="H0559" unto them, I am an Hebrew|strong="H5680"; and I fear|strong="H3373" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, the God|strong="H0430" of heaven|strong="H8064", which hath made|strong="H6213" the sea|strong="H3220" and the dry|strong="H3004" land.

Then were the men|strong="H0582" exceedingly|strong="H1419" afraid|strong="H3372", and said|strong="H0559" unto him, Why hast thou done|strong="H6213" this? For the men|strong="H0582" knew|strong="H3045" that he fled|strong="H1272" from the presence|strong="H6440" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, because he had told|strong="H5046" them.

Then said|strong="H0559" they unto him, What shall we do|strong="H6213" unto thee, that the sea|strong="H3220" may be calm|strong="H8367" unto us? for the sea|strong="H3220" wrought|strong="H1980", and was tempestuous|strong="H5590".

And he said|strong="H0559" unto them, Take me up|strong="H5375", and cast me forth|strong="H2904" into the sea|strong="H3220"; so shall the sea|strong="H3220" be calm|strong="H8367" unto you: for I know|strong="H3045" that for my sake|strong="H7945" this great|strong="H1419" tempest|strong="H5591" is upon you.

Nevertheless the men|strong="H0582" rowed hard|strong="H2864" to bring|strong="H7725" it to the land|strong="H3004"; but they could|strong="H3201" not: for the sea|strong="H3220" wrought|strong="H1980", and was tempestuous|strong="H5590" against them.

Wherefore they cried|strong="H7121" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and said|strong="H0559", We beseech thee|strong="H0577", O \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, we beseech thee, let us not perish|strong="H0006" for this man’s|strong="H0376" life|strong="H5315", and lay|strong="H5414" not upon us innocent|strong="H5355" blood|strong="H1818": for thou, O \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, hast done|strong="H6213" as it pleased|strong="H2654" thee.

So they took up|strong="H5375" Jonah|strong="H3124", and cast him forth|strong="H2904" into the sea|strong="H3220": and the sea|strong="H3220" ceased|strong="H5975" from her raging|strong="H2197".

Then the men|strong="H0582" feared|strong="H3372" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* exceedingly|strong="H1419", and offered|strong="H2076" a sacrifice|strong="H2077" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and made|strong="H5087" vows|strong="H5088".

Now the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* had prepared|strong="H4487" a great|strong="H1419" fish|strong="H1709" to swallow up|strong="H1104" Jonah|strong="H3124". And Jonah|strong="H3124" was in the belly|strong="H4578" of the fish|strong="H1709" three|strong="H7969" days|strong="H3117" and three|strong="H7969" nights|strong="H3915".
