And Satan|strong="H7854" stood up|strong="H5975" against Israel|strong="H3478", and provoked|strong="H5496" David|strong="H1732" to number|strong="H4487" Israel|strong="H3478".
And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" to Joab|strong="H3097" and to the rulers|strong="H8269" of the people|strong="H5971", Go|strong="H3212", number|strong="H5608" Israel|strong="H3478" from Beer-sheba|strong="H0884" even to Dan|strong="H1835"; and bring|strong="H0935" the number|strong="H4557" of them to me, that I may know|strong="H3045" it.
And Joab|strong="H3097" answered|strong="H0559", The \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* make his people|strong="H5971" an hundred|strong="H3967" times|strong="H6471" so many more|strong="H3254" as they|strong="H1992" be: but, my lord|strong="H0113" the king|strong="H4428", are they not all my lord’s|strong="H0113" servants|strong="H5650"? why then doth my lord|strong="H0113" require|strong="H1245" this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass|strong="H0819" to Israel|strong="H3478"?
Nevertheless the king’s|strong="H4428" word|strong="H1697" prevailed|strong="H2388" against Joab|strong="H3097". Wherefore Joab|strong="H3097" departed|strong="H3318", and went|strong="H1980" throughout all Israel|strong="H3478", and came|strong="H0935" to Jerusalem|strong="H3389".
And Joab|strong="H3097" gave|strong="H5414" the sum|strong="H4557" of the number|strong="H4662" of the people|strong="H5971" unto David|strong="H1732". And all they of Israel|strong="H3478" were a thousand|strong="H0505" thousand|strong="H0505" and an hundred|strong="H3967" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376" that drew|strong="H8025" sword|strong="H2719": and Judah|strong="H3063" was four|strong="H0702" hundred|strong="H3967" threescore and ten|strong="H7657" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376" that drew|strong="H8025" sword|strong="H2719".
But Levi|strong="H3878" and Benjamin|strong="H1144" counted|strong="H6485" he not among|strong="H8432" them: for the king’s|strong="H4428" word|strong="H1697" was abominable|strong="H8581" to Joab|strong="H3097".
And God|strong="H0430" was displeased|strong="H3415" with this thing|strong="H1697"; therefore he smote|strong="H5221" Israel|strong="H3478".
And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto God|strong="H0430", I have sinned|strong="H2398" greatly|strong="H3966", because I have done|strong="H6213" this thing|strong="H1697": but now, I beseech thee, do away|strong="H5674" the iniquity|strong="H5771" of thy servant|strong="H5650"; for I have done very|strong="H3966" foolishly|strong="H5528".
And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* spake|strong="H1696" unto Gad|strong="H1410", David’s|strong="H1732" seer|strong="H2374", saying|strong="H0559",
Go|strong="H3212" and tell|strong="H1696" David|strong="H1732", saying|strong="H0559", Thus saith|strong="H0559" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, I offer|strong="H5186" thee three|strong="H7969" things: choose|strong="H0977" thee one|strong="H0259" of them|strong="H2007", that I may do|strong="H6213" it unto thee.
So Gad|strong="H1410" came|strong="H0935" to David|strong="H1732", and said|strong="H0559" unto him, Thus saith|strong="H0559" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, Choose|strong="H6901" thee
Either three|strong="H7969" years’|strong="H8141" famine|strong="H7458"; or three|strong="H7969" months|strong="H2320" to be destroyed|strong="H5595" before|strong="H6440" thy foes|strong="H6862", while that the sword|strong="H2719" of thine enemies|strong="H0341" overtaketh|strong="H5381" thee; or|strong="H0518" else three|strong="H7969" days|strong="H3117" the sword|strong="H2719" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, even the pestilence|strong="H1698", in the land|strong="H0776", and the angel|strong="H4397" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* destroying|strong="H7843" throughout all the coasts|strong="H1366" of Israel|strong="H3478". Now therefore advise|strong="H7200" thyself what word|strong="H1697" I shall bring again|strong="H7725" to him that sent|strong="H7971" me.
And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto Gad|strong="H1410", I am in a great|strong="H3966" strait|strong="H6887": let me fall|strong="H5307" now into the hand|strong="H3027" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*; for very|strong="H3966" great|strong="H7227" are his mercies|strong="H7356": but let me not fall|strong="H5307" into the hand|strong="H3027" of man|strong="H0120".
So the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* sent|strong="H5414" pestilence|strong="H1698" upon Israel|strong="H3478": and there fell|strong="H5307" of Israel|strong="H3478" seventy|strong="H7657" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376".
And God|strong="H0430" sent|strong="H7971" an angel|strong="H4397" unto Jerusalem|strong="H3389" to destroy|strong="H7843" it: and as he was destroying|strong="H7843", the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* beheld|strong="H7200", and he repented|strong="H5162" him of the evil|strong="H7451", and said|strong="H0559" to the angel|strong="H4397" that destroyed|strong="H7843", It is enough|strong="H7227", stay|strong="H7503" now thine hand|strong="H3027". And the angel|strong="H4397" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* stood|strong="H5975" by the threshingfloor|strong="H1637" of Ornan|strong="H0771" the Jebusite|strong="H2983".
And David|strong="H1732" lifted up|strong="H5375" his eyes|strong="H5869", and saw|strong="H7200" the angel|strong="H4397" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* stand|strong="H5975" between the earth|strong="H0776" and the heaven|strong="H8064", having a drawn|strong="H8025" sword|strong="H2719" in his hand|strong="H3027" stretched out|strong="H5186" over Jerusalem|strong="H3389". Then David|strong="H1732" and the elders|strong="H2205" of Israel, who were clothed|strong="H3680" in sackcloth|strong="H8242", fell|strong="H5307" upon their faces|strong="H6440".
And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto God|strong="H0430", Is it not I that commanded|strong="H0559" the people|strong="H5971" to be numbered|strong="H4487"? even I it is that have sinned|strong="H2398" and done evil|strong="H7489" indeed|strong="H7489"; but as for these sheep|strong="H6629", what have they done|strong="H6213"? let thine hand|strong="H3027", I pray thee, O \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* my God|strong="H0430", be on me, and on my father’s|strong="H0001" house|strong="H1004"; but not on thy people|strong="H5971", that they should be plagued|strong="H4046".
Then the angel|strong="H4397" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* commanded|strong="H0559" Gad|strong="H1410" to say|strong="H0559" to David|strong="H1732", that David|strong="H1732" should go up|strong="H5927", and set up|strong="H6965" an altar|strong="H4196" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* in the threshingfloor|strong="H1637" of Ornan|strong="H0771" the Jebusite|strong="H2983".
And David|strong="H1732" went up|strong="H5927" at the saying|strong="H1697" of Gad|strong="H1410", which he spake|strong="H1696" in the name|strong="H8034" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.
And Ornan|strong="H0771" turned back|strong="H7725", and saw|strong="H7200" the angel|strong="H4397"; and his four|strong="H0702" sons|strong="H1121" with him hid|strong="H2244" themselves. Now Ornan|strong="H0771" was threshing|strong="H1758" wheat|strong="H2406".
And as David|strong="H1732" came|strong="H0935" to Ornan|strong="H0771", Ornan|strong="H0771" looked|strong="H5027" and saw|strong="H7200" David|strong="H1732", and went out|strong="H3318" of the threshingfloor|strong="H1637", and bowed|strong="H7812" himself to David|strong="H1732" with his face|strong="H0639" to the ground|strong="H0776".
Then David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" to Ornan|strong="H0771", Grant|strong="H5414" me the place|strong="H4725" of this threshingfloor|strong="H1637", that I may build|strong="H1129" an altar|strong="H4196" therein unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*: thou shalt grant|strong="H5414" it me for the full|strong="H4392" price|strong="H3701": that the plague|strong="H4046" may be stayed|strong="H6113" from the people|strong="H5971".
And Ornan|strong="H0771" said|strong="H0559" unto David|strong="H1732", Take|strong="H3947" it to thee, and let my lord|strong="H0113" the king|strong="H4428" do|strong="H6213" that which is good|strong="H2896" in his eyes|strong="H5869": lo|strong="H7200", I give|strong="H5414" thee the oxen|strong="H1241" also for burnt offerings|strong="H5930", and the threshing instruments|strong="H4173" for wood|strong="H6086", and the wheat|strong="H2406" for the meat offering|strong="H4503"; I give|strong="H5414" it all.
And king|strong="H4428" David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" to Ornan|strong="H0771", Nay; but I will verily|strong="H7069" buy|strong="H7069" it for the full|strong="H4392" price|strong="H3701": for I will not take|strong="H5375" that which is thine for the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, nor offer|strong="H5927" burnt offerings|strong="H5930" without cost|strong="H2600".
So David|strong="H1732" gave|strong="H5414" to Ornan|strong="H0771" for the place|strong="H4725" six|strong="H8337" hundred|strong="H3967" shekels|strong="H8255" of gold|strong="H2091" by weight|strong="H4948".
And David|strong="H1732" built|strong="H1129" there an altar|strong="H4196" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and offered|strong="H5927" burnt offerings|strong="H5930" and peace offerings|strong="H8002", and called|strong="H7121" upon the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*; and he answered|strong="H6030" him from heaven|strong="H8064" by fire|strong="H0784" upon the altar|strong="H4196" of burnt offering|strong="H5930".
And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* commanded|strong="H0559" the angel|strong="H4397"; and he put up|strong="H7725" his sword|strong="H2719" again|strong="H7725" into the sheath|strong="H5084" thereof.
At that time|strong="H6256" when David|strong="H1732" saw|strong="H7200" that the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* had answered|strong="H6030" him in the threshingfloor|strong="H1637" of Ornan|strong="H0771" the Jebusite|strong="H2983", then he sacrificed|strong="H2076" there.
For the tabernacle|strong="H4908" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, which Moses|strong="H4872" made|strong="H6213" in the wilderness|strong="H4057", and the altar|strong="H4196" of the burnt offering|strong="H5930", were at that season|strong="H6256" in the high place|strong="H1116" at Gibeon|strong="H1391".
But David|strong="H1732" could|strong="H3201" not go|strong="H3212" before|strong="H6440" it to enquire|strong="H1875" of God|strong="H0430": for he was afraid|strong="H1204" because|strong="H6440" of the sword|strong="H2719" of the angel|strong="H4397" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.
