1 Behold what manner of charity the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called, and should be the sons of God. Therefore the world knoweth not us, because it knew not him.
1 Vede quão grande amor nos tem concedido o Pai, que fôssemos chamados filhos de Deus. Por isso o mundo não nos conhece; porque não o conhece a ele.
2 Dearly beloved, we are now the sons of God; and it hath not yet appeared what we shall be. We know, that, when he shall appear, we shall be like to him: because we shall see him as he is.
2 Amados, agora somos filhos de Deus, e ainda não é manifestado o que havemos de ser. Mas sabemos que, quando ele se manifestar, seremos semelhantes a ele; porque assim como é o veremos.
3 And every one that hath this hope in him, sanctifieth himself, as he also is holy.
3 E qualquer que nele tem esta esperança purifica-se a si mesmo, como também ele é puro.
4 Whosoever committeth sin commmitteth also iniquity; and sin is iniquity.
4 Qualquer que comete pecado, também comete iniqüidade; porque o pecado é iniqüidade.
5 And you know that he appeared to take away our sins, and in him there is no sin.
5 E bem sabeis que ele se manifestou para tirar os nossos pecados; e nele não há pecado.
6 Whosoever abideth in him, sinneth not; and whosoever sinneth, hath not seen him, nor known him.
6 Qualquer que permanece nele não peca; qualquer que peca não o viu nem o conheceu.
7 Little children, let no man deceive you. He that doth justice is just, even as he is just.
7 Filhinhos, ninguém vos engane. Quem pratica justiça é justo, assim como ele é justo.
8 He that commmitteth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
8 Quem comete o pecado é do diabo; porque o diabo peca desde o princípio. Para isto o Filho de Deus se manifestou: para desfazer as obras do diabo.
9 Whosoever is born of God, commmitteth not sin: for his seed abideth in him, and he can not sin, because he is born of God.
9 Qualquer que é nascido de Deus não comete pecado; porque a sua semente permanece nele; e não pode pecar, porque é nascido de Deus.
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil. Whosoever is not just, is not of God, nor he that loveth not his brother.
10 Nisto são manifestos os filhos de Deus, e os filhos do diabo. Qualquer que não pratica a justiça, e não ama a seu irmão, não é de Deus.
11 For this is the declaration, which you have heard from the beginning, that you should love one another.
11 Porque esta é a mensagem que ouvistes desde o princípio: que nos amemos uns aos outros.
12 Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one, and killed his brother. And wherefore did he kill him? Because his own works were wicked: and his brother's just.
12 Não como Caim, que era do maligno, e matou a seu irmão. E por que causa o matou? Porque as suas obras eram más e as de seu irmão justas.
13 Wonder not, brethren, if the world hate you.
13 Meus irmãos, não vos maravilheis, se o mundo vos odeia.
14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not, abideth in death.
14 Nós sabemos que passamos da morte para a vida, porque amamos os irmãos. Quem não ama a seu irmão permanece na morte.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in himself.
15 Qualquer que odeia a seu irmão é homicida. E vós sabeis que nenhum homicida tem a vida eterna permanecendo nele.
16 In this we have known the charity of God, because he hath laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
16 Conhecemos o amor nisto: que ele deu a sua vida por nós, e nós devemos dar a vida pelos irmãos.
17 He that hath the substance of this world, and shall see his brother in need, and shall shut up his bowels from him: how doth the charity of God abide in him?
17 Quem, pois, tiver bens do mundo, e, vendo o seu irmão necessitado, lhe cerrar as suas entranhas, como estará nele o amor de Deus?
18 My little children, let us not love in word, nor in tongue, but in deed, and in truth.
18 Meus filhinhos, não amemos de palavra, nem de língua, mas por obra e em verdade.
19 In this we know that we are of the truth: and in his sight shall persuade our hearts.
19 E nisto conhecemos que somos da verdade, e diante dele asseguraremos nossos corações;
20 For if our heart reprehend us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
20 Sabendo que, se o nosso coração nos condena, maior é Deus do que o nosso coração, e conhece todas as coisas.
21 Dearly beloved, if our heart do not reprehend us, we have confidence towards God:
21 Amados, se o nosso coração não nos condena, temos confiança para com Deus;
22 And whatsoever we shall ask, we shall receive of him: because we keep his commandments, and do those things which are pleasing in his sight.
22 E qualquer coisa que lhe pedirmos, dele a receberemos, porque guardamos os seus mandamentos, e fazemos o que é agradável à sua vista.
23 And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ: and love one another, as he hath given commandment unto us.
23 E o seu mandamento é este: que creiamos no nome de seu Filho Jesus Cristo, e nos amemos uns aos outros, segundo o seu mandamento.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments, abideth in him, and he in him. And in this we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
24 E aquele que guarda os seus mandamentos nele está, e ele nele. E nisto conhecemos que ele está em nós, pelo Espírito que nos tem dado.
