¹ At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report of Jesus,

¹ Naquele tempo ouviu Herodes, o tetrarca, a fama de Jesus,

² and he said to his boys, This is John the immerser. He has risen from the dead, and because of this the powers work in him.

² E disse aos seus criados: Este é João o Batista; ressuscitou dos mortos, e por isso estas maravilhas operam nele.

³ For Herod having arrested John, bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.

³ Porque Herodes tinha prendido João, e tinha-o maniatado e encerrado no cárcere, por causa de Herodias, mulher de seu irmão Filipe;

⁴ For John said to him, It is not permitted for thee to have her.

⁴ Porque João lhe dissera: Não te é lícito possuí-la.

⁵ And though he wanted to kill him, he feared the multitude because they held him as a prophet.

⁵ E, querendo matá-lo, temia o povo; porque o tinham como profeta.

⁶ But Herod's birthday being brought, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod.

⁶ Festejando-se, porém, o dia natalício de Herodes, dançou a filha de Herodias diante dele, e agradou a Herodes.

⁷ Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask.

⁷ Por isso prometeu, com juramento, dar-lhe tudo o que pedisse;

⁸ And she, having been put forward by her mother, says, Give me here on a platter the head of John the immerser.

⁸ E ela, instruída previamente por sua mãe, disse: Dá-me aqui, num prato, a cabeça de João o Batista.

⁹ And he became sad, but because of the oaths, and of those dining together, the king commanded it to be given.

⁹ E o rei afligiu-se, mas, por causa do juramento, e dos que estavam à mesa com ele, ordenou que se lhe desse.

¹⁰ And having sent, he beheaded John in the prison.

¹⁰ E mandou degolar João no cárcere.

¹¹ And his head was brought on a platter, and given to the maiden, and she brought it to her mother.

¹¹ E a sua cabeça foi trazida num prato, e dada à jovem, e ela a levou a sua mãe.

¹² And after coming, his disciples took up the body and buried it, and having gone, they informed Jesus.

¹² E chegaram os seus discípulos, e levaram o corpo, e o sepultaram; e foram anunciá-lo a Jesus.

¹³ Now when Jesus heard it, he departed from there in a boat into a desolate place in private. And when the multitudes heard of it, they followed him on foot from the cities.

¹³ E Jesus, ouvindo isto, retirou-se dali num barco, para um lugar deserto, apartado; e, sabendo-o o povo, seguiu-o a pé desde as cidades.

¹⁴ And having come forth, Jesus saw a great multitude, and he felt compassion toward them, and healed the feeble of them.

¹⁴ E, Jesus, saindo, viu uma grande multidão, e possuído de íntima compaixão para com ela, curou os seus enfermos.

¹⁵ And having become evening, his disciples came to him, saying, The place is desolate, and the hour is now past. Send the multitudes away, so that having gone into the villages, they may buy food for themselves.

¹⁵ E, sendo chegada a tarde, os seus discípulos aproximaram-se dele, dizendo: O lugar é deserto, e a hora é já avançada; despede a multidão, para que vão pelas aldeias, e comprem comida para si.

¹⁶ But Jesus said to them, They have no need to depart. Give ye them to eat.

¹⁶ Jesus, porém, lhes disse: Não é mister que vão; dai-lhes vós de comer.

¹⁷ And they say to him, We have not here, except five loaves and two fishes.

¹⁷ Então eles lhe disseram: Não temos aqui senão cinco pães e dois peixes.

¹⁸ But he said, Bring them here to me.

¹⁸ E ele disse: Trazei-mos aqui.

¹⁹ And after commanding the multitudes to sit down on the grass, having taken the five loaves, and the two fishes, having looking up to heaven, he blessed. And having broken them in pieces, he gave the loaves to the disciples, and the

¹⁹ E, tendo mandado que a multidão se assentasse sobre a erva, tomou os cinco pães e os dois peixes, e, erguendo os olhos ao céu, os abençoou, e, partindo os pães, deu-os aos discípulos, e os discípulos à multidão.

²⁰ And they all ate, and were filled. And they took up that which remained of the fragments, twelve baskets full.

²⁰ E comeram todos, e saciaramse; e levantaram dos pedaços, que sobejaram, doze alcofas cheias.

²¹ And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

²¹ E os que comeram foram quase cinco mil homens, além das mulheres e crianças.

²² And straightaway Jesus compelled the disciples to enter into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, until he would dismiss the multitudes.

²² E logo ordenou Jesus que os seus discípulos entrassem no barco, e fossem adiante para o outro lado, enquanto despedia a multidão.

²³ And having dismissed the multitudes, he went up onto the mountain in private to pray. And having become evening, he was there alone.

²³ E, despedida a multidão, subiu ao monte para orar, à parte. E, chegada já a tarde, estava ali só.

²⁴ But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, being buffeted by the waves, for the wind was contrary.

²⁴ E o barco estava já no meio do mar, açoitado pelas ondas; porque o vento era contrário;

²⁵ And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking upon the sea.

²⁵ Mas, à quarta vigília da noite, dirigiu-se Jesus para eles, andan-do por cima do mar.

²⁶ And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a ghost, and they cried out from fear.

²⁶ E os discípulos, vendo-o an-dando sobre o mar, assustaram-se, dizendo: É um fantasma. E gritaram com medo.

²⁷ But straightaway Jesus spoke to them, saying, Cheer up. It is I, fear not.

²⁷ Jesus, porém, lhes falou logo, dizendo: Tende bom ânimo, sou eu, não temais.

²⁸ And having answered him, Peter said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come to thee on the waters.

²⁸ E respondeu-lhe Pedro, e disse: Senhor, se és tu, manda-me ir ter contigo por cima das águas.

²⁹ And he said, Come. And having come down from the boat, Peter walked upon the water to go to Jesus.

²⁹ E ele disse: Vem. E Pedro, descendo do barco, andou sobre as águas para ir ter com Jesus.

³⁰ But seeing the boisterous wind, he was afraid, and having begun to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.

³⁰ Mas, sentindo o vento forte, teve medo; e, começando a ir para o fundo, clamou, dizendo: Senhor, salva-me!

³¹ And straightaway having stretched forth his hand, Jesus took hold of him, and says to him, O thou of little faith, why did thou doubt?

³¹ E logo Jesus, estendendo a mão, segurou-o, e disse-lhe: Homem de pouca fé, por que duvidaste?

³² And when they entered into the boat, the wind ceased.

³² E, quando subiram para o barco, acalmou o vento.

³³ And those who came in the boat worshiped him, saying, Thou really are the Son of God.

³³ Então aproximaram-se os que estavam no barco, e adoraram-no, dizendo: És verdadeiramente o Filho de Deus.

³⁴ And when they crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.

³⁴ E, tendo passado para o outro lado, chegaram à terra de Genesaré.

³⁵ And when they recognized him, the men of that place sent into that whole region round about, and brought to him all those faring badly.

³⁵ E, quando os homens daquele lugar o conheceram, mandaram por todas aquelas terras em redor e trouxeram-lhe todos os que estavam enfermos.

³⁶ And they besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment. And as many as touched were healed.

³⁶ E rogavam-lhe que ao menos eles pudessem tocar a orla da sua roupa; e todos os que a tocavam ficavam sãos.
