1 And the men of Ephraim are called together, and pass over northward, and say to Jephthah, `Wherefore has thou passed over to fight against the Bene-Ammon, and on us hast not called to go with thee? thy house we burn over thee with fire.`
1 Então os homens de Efraim se congregaram, passaram para Zafom e disseram a Jefté: Por que passaste a combater contra os amonitas, e não nos chamaste para irmos contigo? Queimaremos a fogo a tua casa contigo.
2 And Jephthah saith unto them, `A man of great strife I have been (I and my people) with the Bene-Ammon, and I call you, and ye have not saved me out of their hand,
2 Disse-lhes Jefté: Eu e o meu povo tivemos grande contenda com os amonitas; e quando vos chamei, não me livrastes da sua mão.
3 and I see that thou art not a saviour, and I put my life in my hand, and pass over unto the Bene-Ammon, and Jehovah giveth them into my hand -- and why have ye come up unto me this day to fight against me?`
3 Vendo eu que não me livráveis, arrisquei a minha vida e fui de encontro aos amonitas, e o Senhor mos entregou nas mãos; por que, pois, subistes vós hoje para combater contra mim?
4 And Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead, and fighteth with Ephraim, and the men of Gilead smite Ephraim, because they said, `Fugitives of Ephraim [are] ye Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim -- in the midst of Manasseh.`
4 Depois ajuntou Jefté todos os homens de Gileade, e combateu contra Efraim, e os homens de Gileade feriram a Efraim; porque este lhes dissera: Fugitivos sois de Efraim, vós gileaditas que habitais entre Efraim e Manassés.
5 And Gilead captureth the passages of the Jordan to Ephraim, and it hath been, when [any of] the fugitives of Ephraim say, `Let me pass over,` and the men of Gilead say to him, `An Ephramite thou?` and he saith, `No;`
5 E tomaram os gileaditas aos efraimitas os vaus do Jordão; e quando algum dos fugitivos de Efraim dizia: Deixai-me passar; então os homens de Gileade lhe perguntavam: És tu efraimita? E dizendo ele: Não;
6 that they say to him, `Say, I pray thee, Shibboleth;` and he saith, `Sibboleth,` and is not prepared to speak right -- and they seize him, and slaughter him at the passages of the Jordan, and there fall at that time, of Ephraim, forty and two chiefs.
6 então lhe diziam: Dize, pois, Chibolete; porém ele dizia: Sibolete, porque não o podia pronunciar bem. Então pegavam dele, e o degolavam nos vaus do Jordão. Cairam de Efraim naquele tempo quarenta e dois mil.
7 And Jephthah judged Israel six years, and Jephthah the Gileadite dieth, and is buried in [one of] the cities of Gilead.
7 Jefté julgou a Israel seis anos; e morreu Jefté, o gileadita, e foi sepultado numa das cidades de Gileade.
8 And after him Ibzan of Beth-Lehem judgeth Israel,
8 Depois dele julgou a Israel Ibzã de Belém.
9 and he hath thirty sons and thirty daughters, he hath sent without and thirty daughters hath brought in to his sons from without; and he judgeth Israel seven years.
9 Tinha este trinta filhos, e trinta filhas que casou fora; e trinta filhas trouxe de fora para seus filhos. E julgou a Israel sete anos.
10 And Ibzan dieth, and is buried in Beth-Lehem.
10 Morreu Ibzã, e foi sepultado em Belém.
11 And after him Elon the Zebulunite judgeth Israel, and he judgeth Israel ten years,
11 Depois dele Elom, o zebulonita, julgou a Israel dez anos.
12 and Elon the Zebulunite dieth, and is buried in Aijalon, in the land of Zebulun.
12 Morreu Elom, o zebulonita, e foi sepultado em Aijalom, na terra de Zebulom.
13 And after him, Abdon son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, judgeth Israel,
13 Depois dele julgou a Israel Abdom, filho de Hilel, o piratonita.
14 and he hath forty sons, and thirty grandsons, riding on seventy ass-colts, and he judgeth Israel eight years.
14 Tinha este quarenta filhos e trinta netos, que cavalgavam sobre setenta jumentos. E julgou a Israel oito anos.
15 And Abdon son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, dieth, and is buried in Pirathon, in the land of Ephraim, in the hill-country of the Amalekite.
15 Morreu Abdom, filho de Hilel, o piratonita, e foi sepultado em Piratom, na terra de Efraim, na região montanhosa dos amalequitas.
