1 Mi britheren, nyle ye be maad many maistris, witynge that ye taken the more doom.
1 Meus irmãos, não sejais muitos de vós mestres, sabendo que receberemos um juízo mais severo.
2 For alle we offenden in many thingis. If ony man offendith not in word, this is a perfit man; for also he may lede aboute al the bodi with a bridil.
2 Todos tropeçamos em muitas coisas. Se alguém não tropeça em palavra, esse é homem perfeito, e capaz de refrear também todo o corpo.
3 For if we putten bridlis `in to horsis mouthis, for to consente to vs, and we leden aboute al the bodi of hem.
3 Ora, se pomos freios na boca dos cavalos, para que nos obedeçam, então conseguimos dirigir todo o seu corpo.
4 And lo! schippis, whanne thei ben grete, and ben dryuun of stronge wyndis, yit thei ben borun about of a litil gouernaile, where the meuyng of the gouernour wole.
4 Vede também os navios que, embora tão grandes e levados por impetuosos ventos, com um pequenino leme se voltam para onde quer o impulso do timoneiro.
5 So also the tunge is but a litil membre, and reisith grete thingis. Lo! hou litil fier brenneth a ful greet wode.
5 Assim também a língua é um pequeno membro, e se gaba de grandes coisas. Vede quão grande bosque um tão pequeno fogo incendeia.
6 And oure tunge is fier, the vniuersite of wickidnesse. The tunge is ordeyned in oure membris, which defoulith al the bodi; and it is enflawmed of helle, and enflawmeth the wheel of oure birthe.
6 A língua também é um fogo; sim, a língua, qual mundo de iniqüidade, colocada entre os nossos membros, contamina todo o corpo, e inflama o curso da natureza, sendo por sua vez inflamada pelo inferno.
7 And al the kynde of beestis, and of foulis, and of serpentis, and of othere is chastisid, and tho ben maad tame of mannus kinde; but no man mai chastise the tunge,
7 Pois toda espécie tanto de feras, como de aves, tanto de répteis como de animais do mar, se doma, e tem sido domada pelo gênero humano,
8 for it is an vnpesible yuel, and ful of deedli venym.
8 mas a língua, nenhum homem a pode domar. É um mal irrefreável; está cheia de peçonha mortal.
9 In it we blessen God, the fadir, and in it we cursen men, that ben maad to the licnesse of God.
9 Com ela bendizemos ao Senhor e Pai, e com ela amaldiçoamos os homens, feitos à semelhança de Deus.
10 Of the same mouth passith forth blessing and cursing. My britheren, it bihoueth not that these thingis be don so.
10 Da mesma boca procede bênção e maldição. Não convém, meus irmãos, que se faça assim.
11 Whether a welle of the same hoole bringith forth swete and salt watir?
11 Porventura a fonte deita da mesma abertura água doce e água amargosa?
12 My britheren, whether a fige tre may make grapis, ethir a vyne figus? So nethir salt watir mai make swete watir.
12 Meus irmãos, pode acaso uma figueira produzir azeitonas, ou uma videira figos? Nem tampouco pode uma fonte de água salgada dar água doce.
13 Who is wijs, and tauyt among you? schewe he of good lyuyng his worching, in myldenesse of his wisdom.
13 Quem dentre vós é sábio e entendido? Mostre pelo seu bom procedimento as suas obras em mansidão de sabedoria.
14 That if ye han bitter enuye, and stryuyngis ben in youre hertis, nyle ye haue glorye, and be lyeris ayens the treuthe.
14 Mas, se tendes amargo ciúme e sentimento faccioso em vosso coração, não vos glorieis, nem mintais contra a verdade.
15 For this wisdom is not fro aboue comynge doun, but ertheli, and beestli, and feendli.
15 Essa não é a sabedoria que vem do alto, mas é terrena, animal e diabólica.
16 For where is enuye and strijf, there is vnstidfastnesse and al schrewid werk.
16 Porque onde há ciúme e sentimento faccioso, aí há confusão e toda obra má.
17 But wisdom that is from aboue, first it is chast, aftirward pesible, mylde, able to be counseilid, consentinge to goode thingis, ful of merci and of goode fruytis, demynge with out feynyng.
17 Mas a sabedoria que vem do alto é, primeiramente, pura, depois pacífica, moderada, tratável, cheia de misericórdia e de bons frutos, sem parcialidade, e sem hipocrisia.
18 And the fruyt of riytwisnesse is sowun in pees, to men that maken pees.
18 Ora, o fruto da justiça semeia-se em paz para aqueles que promovem a paz.
