1 In tho daies Joon Baptist cam, and prechide in the desert of Judee,
1 Naqueles dias, apareceu João Batista pregando no deserto da Judeia e dizia:
2 and seide, Do ye penaunce, for the kyngdom of heuenes shal neiye.
2 Arrependei-vos, porque está próximo o reino dos céus.
3 For this is he, of whom it is seid bi Ysaie, the prophete, seyinge, A vois of a crier in desert, Make ye redi the weies of the Lord; make ye riyt the pathis of hym.
3 Porque este é o referido por intermédio do profeta Isaías: Voz do que clama no deserto: Preparai o caminho do Senhor, endireitai as suas veredas.
4 And this Joon hadde clothing of camels heeris, and a girdil of skynne aboute hise leendis; and his mete was honysoukis, and hony of the wode.
4 Usava João vestes de pelos de camelo e um cinto de couro; a sua alimentação eram gafanhotos e mel silvestre.
5 Thanne Jerusalem wente out to hym, and al Judee, and al the cuntre aboute Jordan;
5 Então, saíam a ter com ele Jerusalém, toda a Judeia e toda a circunvizinhança do Jordão;
6 and thei weren waischun of hym in Jordan, `and knowlechiden her synnes.
6 e eram por ele batizados no rio Jordão, confessando os seus pecados.
7 But he siy manye of the Farysees and of Saduceis comynge to his baptym, and seide to hem, Generaciouns of eddris, who shewide to you to fle fro the wraththe that is to come?
7 Vendo ele, porém, que muitos fariseus e saduceus vinham ao batismo, disse-lhes: Raça de víboras, quem vos induziu a fugir da ira vindoura?
8 Therfor do ye worthi fruyte of penaunce,
8 Produzi, pois, frutos dignos de arrependimento;
9 and nyle ye seie with ynne you, We han Abraham to fadir; for Y seie to you, that God is myyti to reise vp of these stoones the sones of Abraham.
9 e não comeceis a dizer entre vós mesmos: Temos por pai a Abraão; porque eu vos afirmo que destas pedras Deus pode suscitar filhos a Abraão.
10 And now the ax is put to the roote of the tree; therfore euery tree that makith not good fruyt, shal be kit doun, and shal be cast in to the fier.
10 Já está posto o machado à raiz das árvores; toda árvore, pois, que não produz bom fruto é cortada e lançada ao fogo.
11 Y waische you in water, in to penaunce; but he that shal come after me is strongere than Y, whos schoon Y am not worthi to bere; he shal baptise you in the Hooli Goost and fier.
11 Eu vos batizo com água, para arrependimento; mas aquele que vem depois de mim é mais poderoso do que eu, cujas sandálias não sou digno de levar. Ele vos batizará com o Espírito Santo e com fogo.
12 Whos wynewing cloth is in his hoond, and he shal fulli clense his corn flore, and shal gadere his whete in to his berne; but the chaffe he shal brenne with fier that mai not be quenchid.
12 A sua pá, ele a tem na mão e limpará completamente a sua eira; recolherá o seu trigo no celeiro, mas queimará a palha em fogo inextinguível.
13 Thanne Jhesus cam fro Galilee in to Jordan to Joon, to be baptised of hym.
13 Por esse tempo, dirigiu-se Jesus da Galileia para o Jordão, a fim de que João o batizasse.
14 And Joon forbede him, and seide, Y owe to be baptisid of thee, and thou comest to me?
14 Ele, porém, o dissuadia, dizendo: Eu é que preciso ser batizado por ti, e tu vens a mim?
15 But Jhesus answeride, and seide to hym, Suffre nowe, for thus it fallith to vs to fulfille al riytfulnesse.
15 Mas Jesus lhe respondeu: Deixa por enquanto, porque, assim, nos convém cumprir toda a justiça. Então, ele o admitiu.
16 Thanne Joon suffride hym. And whanne Jhesus was baptisid, anoon he wente up fro the watir; and lo! heuenes weren openyd to hym, and he saie the Spirit of God comynge doun as a dowue, and comynge on hym; and loo!
16 Batizado Jesus, saiu logo da água, e eis que se lhe abriram os céus, e viu o Espírito de Deus descendo como pomba, vindo sobre ele.
17 a vois fro heuenes, seiynge, This is my louyd sone, in which Y haue plesid to me.
17 E eis uma voz dos céus, que dizia: Este é o meu Filho amado, em quem me comprazo.
