1 And whanne these thingis weren herd, alle the kyngis biyende Jordan, that lyueden in the hilly places, and in `the feeldi places, in the coostis of the see, and in the brynke of the greet see, and thei that dwellen bisidis Liban, Ethei, and Ammorrei, Cananei, and Feresey, Euey, and Jebusey,
1 Depois sucedeu que, ouvindo isto todos os reis que estavam além do Jordão, na região montanhosa, na baixada e em toda a costa do grande mar, defronte do Líbano, os heteus, os amorreus, os cananeus, os perizeus, os heveus, e os jebuseus
2 weren gaderid togidere to fiyte ayens Josue and Israel, with o wille, and the same sentence.
2 se ajuntaram de comum acordo para pelejar contra Josué e contra Israel.
3 And thei that dwelten in Gabaon, herden alle thingis whiche Josue hadde do to Jerico, and to Hay; and thei thouyten felli,
3 Ora, os moradores de Gibeão, ouvindo o que Josué fizera a Jericó e a Ai.
4 and token to hem silf metis, and puttyden elde sackis on assis, and wyn botels brokun and sewid, and ful elde schoon,
4 usaram de astúcia: foram e se fingiram embaixadores, tomando sacos velhos sobre os seus jumentos, e odres de vinho velhos, rotos e recosidos,
5 whiche weren sewid togidere with patchis, to `the schewyng of eldenesse; and thei weren clothid with elde clothis; also looues, whiche thei baren for lijflode in the weie, weren harde and brokun in to gobetis.
5 tendo nos seus pés sapatos velhos e remendados, e trajando roupas velhas; e todo o pão que traziam para o caminho era seco e bolorento.
6 And thei yeden to Josue, that dwellide thanne in tentis in Galgala; and thei seiden to hym, and to al Israel togidere, We comen fro a fer lond, and coueyten to make pees with you. And the men of Israel answeriden to hem,
6 E vieram a Josué, ao arraial em Gilgal, e disseram a ele e aos homens de Israel: Somos vindos duma terra longínqua; fazei, pois, agora pacto conosco.
7 and seiden, Lest perauenture ye dwellen in the lond, which is due to vs bi eritage, and we moun not make bond of pees with you.
7 Responderam os homens de Israel a estes heveus: Bem pode ser que habiteis no meio de nós; como pois faremos pacto convosco?
8 And thei seiden to Josue, We ben thi seruauntis. To whiche Josue seide, What men ben ye, and fro whennus camen ye?
8 Então eles disseram a Josué: Nós somos teus servos. Ao que lhes perguntou Josué: Quem sois vós? e donde vindes?
9 Thei answeriden, Thi seruauntis camen fro a ful fer lond in the name of thi Lord God, for we herden the fame of his power, alle thingis whiche he dide in Egipt,
9 Responderam-lhe: Teus servos vieram duma terra mui distante, por causa do nome do Senhor teu Deus, porquanto ouvimos a sua fama, e tudo o que fez no Egito,
10 and to twei kyngis of Ammorreis biyendis Jordan; to Seon king of Esebon, and to Og kyng of Basan, that weren in Astroth.
10 e tudo o que fez aos dois reis dos amorreus, que estavam além do Jordão, a Siom, rei de Hesbom, e a Ogue, rei de Basã, que estava em Astarote.
11 And the eldere men and alle the dwelleris of oure lond seiden to vs, Take ye metis in youre hondis, for lengeste weie; and go ye to hem, and seie ye, We ben youre seruauntis; make ye boond of pees with vs.
11 Pelo que nossos anciãos e todos os moradores da nossa terra nos falaram, dizendo: Tomai nas mãos provisão para o caminho, e ide-lhes ao encontro, e dizei-lhes: Nós somos vossos servos; fazei, pois, agora pacto conosco.
12 And we token hoote looues, whanne we yeden out of oure housis to come to you; now tho ben maad drye and brokun, for greet eldenesse;
12 Este nosso pão tomamo-lo quente das nossas casas para nossa provisão, no dia em que saímos para vir ter convosco, e ei-lo aqui agora seco e bolorento;
13 we filliden newe botels of wyn; now tho ben brokun and vndoon; the clothis and schoon, with whiche we ben clothid, and whiche we han `in the feet, ben brokun and almost wastid, fro the lengthe of lengere weie.
13 estes odres, que enchemos de vinho, eram novos, e ei-los aqui já rotos; e esta nossa roupa e nossos sapatos já envelheceram em razão do mui longo caminho.
14 Therfor `the sones of Israel token of the metis of hem, and thei axiden not `the mouth of the Lord.
14 Então os homens de Israel tomaram da provisão deles, e não pediram conselho ao Senhor.
15 And Josue made pees with hem. And whanne the boond of pees was maad, he bihiyte, that thei schulden not be slayn; and the princes of the multitude sworen to hem.
15 Assim Josué fez paz com eles; também fez um pacto com eles, prometendo poupar-lhes a vida; e os príncipes da congregação lhes prestaram juramento.
16 Forsothe aftir thre daies of the boond of pees maad, thei herden, that thei dwelliden in nyy place, and that thei schulden be among hem.
16 Três dias depois de terem feito pacto com eles, ouviram que eram vizinhos e que moravam no meio deles.
17 And the sones of Israel mouyden tentis, and camen in the thridde dai in to the citees of hem, of whiche citees these ben the names; Gabaon, and Caphira, and Beroth, and Cariathiarym.
17 Tendo partido os filhos de Israel, chegaram ao terceiro dia às cidades deles, que eram Gibeom, Cefira, Beerote e Quiriate-Jearir.
18 And thei smytiden not hem, for the princis of the multitude hadden swore to hem in the name of the Lord God of Israel. Therfor al the comyn puple grutchide ayens the princis of Israel;
18 Mas os filhos de Israel não os mataram, porquanto os príncipes da congregação lhes haviam prestado juramento pelo Senhor, o Deus de Israel; pelo que toda a congregação murmurava contra os príncipes.
19 whiche answeriden to hem, We sworen to hem in the name of the Lord God of Israel, and therfor we moun not touche hem;
19 Mas os príncipes disseram a toda a congregação: Nós lhes prestamos juramento pelo Senhor, o Deus de Israel, e agora não lhes podemos tocar.
20 but we schulen do this thing to hem, sotheli be thei reserued that thei lyue, lest the ire of the Lord be stirid ayens vs, if we forsweren to hem;
20 Isso cumpriremos para com eles, poupando-lhes a vida, para que não haja ira sobre nós, por causa do juramento que lhes fizemos.
21 but so lyue thei, that thei hewe trees, and bere watris, in to the vsis of al the multitude. And while thei spaken these thingis,
21 Disseram, pois, os príncipes: Vivam. Assim se tornaram rachadores de lenha e tiradores de água para toda a congregação, como os príncipes lhes disseram.
22 Josue clepide Gabonytis, and seide to hem, Whi wolden ye disseyue vs bi fraude, `that ye seiden, We dwellen ful fer fro you, sithen ye ben in the myddis of vs?
22 Então Josué os chamou, e lhes disse: Por que nos enganastes, dizendo: Mui longe de vós habitamos, morando vós no meio de nós?
23 Therfor ye schulen be `vndur cursyng, and noon schal faile of youre generacioun, hewynge trees and berynge watris, in to the hows of my God.
23 Agora, pois, sois malditos, e dentre vós nunca deixará de haver servos, rachadores de lenha e tiradores de água para a casa do meu Deus.
24 Whiche answeryden, It was told to vs thi seruauntis, that thi Lord God bihiyte to Moises, his seruaunt, that he schulde bitake to you al the lond, and schulde leese alle the dwelleris therof; therfor we dredden greetli, and purueiden to oure lyues, and weren compellid bi youre drede, and we token this counsel.
24 Respondendo a Josué, disseram: Porquanto foi anunciado aos teus servos que o Senhor teu Deus ordenou a Moisés, seu servo, que vos desse toda esta terra, e destruísse todos os seus moradores diante de vós, temíamos muito pelas nossas vidas por causa de vós, e fizemos isso.
25 `Now forsothe we ben in `thin hond; do thou to vs that, that semeth riytful and good to thee.
25 E eis que agora estamos na tua mão; faze aquilo que te pareça bom e reto que se nos faça.
26 Therfor Josue dide, as he seide, and delyuerede hem fro the hondis of the sones of Israel, that thei schulden not be slayn.
26 Assim pois ele lhes fez, e livrou-os das mãos dos filhos de Israel, de sorte que estes não os mataram.
27 And in that dai Josue demyde hem to be in to the seruyce of al the puple, and of the auter of the Lord, and to hewe trees, and to bere watris, `til in to present tyme, in the place which the Lord hadde chose.
27 Mas, naquele dia, Josué os fez rachadores de lenha e tiradores de água para a congregação e para o altar do Senhor, no lugar que ele escolhesse, como ainda o são.
