1 The word that was maad of the Lord to Jeremye,
1 Foi dirigida a Jeremias a palavra do Senhor nestes termos:
2 and seide, Rise thou, and go doun in to the hous of a pottere, and there thou schalt here my wordis.
2 Vai e desce à casa do oleiro, e ali te farei ouvir minha palavra.
3 And Y yede doun in to the hous of a pottere, and lo! he made a werk on a wheel.
3 Desci, então, à casa do oleiro, e o encontrei ocupado a trabalhar no torno.
4 And the vessel was distried, which he made of clei with hise hondis; and he turnede it, and made it another vessel, as it pleside in hise iyen to make.
4 Quando o vaso que estava a modelar não lhe saía bem, como sói acontecer nos trabalhos de cerâmica, punha-se a trabalhar em outro à sua maneira.
5 And the word of the Lord was maad to me,
5 Foi esta, então, a linguagem do Senhor: casa de Israel, não poderei fazer de vós o que faz esse oleiro? - oráculo do Senhor.
6 and he seide, Whether as this pottere doith, Y mai not do to you, the hous of Israel? seith the Lord. Lo! as cley is in the hond of a pottere, so ye, the hous of Israel, ben in myn hond.
6 O que é a argila em suas mãos, assim sois vós nas minhas, Casa de Israel.
7 Sudenli Y schal speke ayens a folk, and ayens a rewme, that Y drawe out, and distrie, and leese it.
7 Ora anuncio a uma nação ou a um reino que vou arrancá-lo e destruí-lo.
8 If thilke folk doith penaunce of his yuel, which Y spak ayens it, also Y schal do penaunce on the yuel, which Y thouyte to do to it.
8 Mas se essa nação, contra a qual me pronunciei, se afastar do mal que cometeu, arrependo-me da punição com que resolvera castigá-la.
9 And Y schal speke sudenli of a folk, and of a rewme, that Y bilde, and plaunte it.
9 Outras vezes, em relação a um povo ou reino, resolvo edificá-lo e plantá-lo.
10 If it doith yuel bifore myn iyen, that it here not my vois, Y schal do penaunce on the good which Y spak, that Y schulde do to it.
10 Se, porém, tal nação proceder mal diante de meus olhos e não escutar minha palavra, recuarei do bem que lhe decidira fazer.
11 Now therfor seie thou to a man of Juda, and to the dwellere of Jerusalem, and seie, The Lord seith these thingis, Lo! Y make yuel ayens you, and Y thenke a thouyte ayens you; ech man turne ayen fro his yuel weie, and dresse ye youre weies and youre studies.
11 Assim, portanto, dirige-te agora nestes termos à gente de Judá e aos habitantes de Jerusalém: Es o que diz o Senhor: nutro o desígnio de lançar-vos uma desgraça, tenciono um projeto contra vós. Voltai todos, portanto, do mau caminho, emendai vosso proceder e vossos atos.
12 Whiche seiden, We han dispeirid, for we schulen go after oure thouytis, and we schulen do ech man the schrewidnesse of his yuel herte.
12 É inútil, responderão eles, seguiremos nossas idéias e cada um de nós agirá de acordo com as más inclinações de seu coração obstinado.
13 Therfor the Lord seith these thingis, Axe ye hethene men, who herde siche orible thingis, whiche the virgyn of Israel hath do greetli?
13 Eis por que assim fala o Senhor: Interrogai as nações pagãs: quem jamais ouviu semelhante coisa? Foi perversidade sem nome a cometida pela virgem de Israel.
14 Whether snow of the Liban schal fail fro the stoon of the feeld? ether coolde watris brekynge out, and fletynge doun moun be takun awei?
14 Acaso será abandonado o rochedo que domina a planície pela neve do Líbano? E esgotar-se-ão as águas fluentes, que, frescas, correm das montanhas?
15 For my puple hath foryete me, and offriden sacrifices in veyn, and snaperiden in her weies, and in the pathis of the world, that thei yeden bi tho in a weie not trodun;
15 No entanto, o meu povo me esqueceu! Incensa ídolos quiméricos, que o fazem tropeçar pelo caminho, o caminho de outrora, conduzindo-o por veredas {tortuosas} de caminhos não trilhados.
16 that the lond of hem schulde be in to desolacioun, and in to an hissyng euerlastinge; for whi ech that passith bi it, schal be astonyed, and schal moue his heed.
16 A um deserto será reduzida a terra, objeto de perpétuo assobio; e o que por ele passar, estupefato, meneará a cabeça.
17 As a brennynge wynd Y schal scatere hem bifor the enemy; Y schal schewe to hem the bak and not the face, in the dai of the perdicioun of hem.
17 À semelhança do vento de leste, eu o dispersarei ante seus inimigos. E lhe voltarei as costas e não a face no dia da desgraça.
18 And thei seiden, Come ye, and thenke we thouytis ayens Jeremye; for whi the lawe schal not perische fro a preest, nether councel schal perische fro a wijs man, nether word schal perische fro a profete; come ye, and smyte we hym with tunge, and take we noon heede to alle the wordis of hym.
18 Vinde, disseram então, e tramemos uma conspiração contra Jeremias! Por falta de um sacerdote não perecerá a lei, nem pela falta de um sábio, o conselho, ou pela falta de um profeta, a palavra divina. Vinde e firamo-lo com a língua, não lhe demos ouvidos às palavras!
19 Lord, yyue thou tent to me, and here thou the vois of myn aduersaries.
19 Senhor, ouvi-me! Escutai o que dizem meus inimigos.
20 Whether yuel is yoldun for good, for thei han diggid a pit to my soule; haue thou mynde, that Y stoode in thi siyt, to speke good for hem, and to turne awei thin indignacioun fro hem.
20 É assim que pagam o bem com o mal? Abrem uma cova para atentar-me contra a vida. Lembrai-vos de que ante vós me apresentei a fim de por eles interceder e deles afastar a vossa cólera.
21 Therfor yyue thou the sones of hem in to hungur, and lede forth hem in to the hondis of swerd; the wyues of hem be maad with out children, and be maad widewis, and the hosebondis of hem be slayn bi deth; the yonge men of hem be persid togidere bi swerd in batel.
21 Assim, entregai-lhes os filhos à fome e a eles próprios ao fio da espada. Percam suas mulheres os filhos e maridos, morram os homens pela peste, e os jovens caiam sob a espada nos combates.
22 Cry be herd of the housis of hem, for thou schalt bringe sudenli a theef on hem; for thei diggiden a pit to take me, and hidden snaris to my feet.
22 Quando, de súbito, sobre eles lançardes hordas armadas, ouçam-se os clamores partidos de suas casas, já que cavaram uma fossa para prender-me, e armaram laços a meus pés.
23 But thou, Lord, knowist al the councel of hem ayens me in to deth; do thou not merci to the wickidnesse of hem, and the synne of hem be not doon awei fro thi face; be thei maad fallynge doun in thi siyt, in the tyme of thi stronge veniaunce; vse thou hem to othir thing than thei weren ordeyned.
23 Vós, porém, Senhor, que bem conheceis suas conspirações de morte contra mim, não lhes perdoeis tal iniqüidade. Que a vossos olhos o seu pecado permaneça indelével e caiam diante de vós. Agi contra eles no dia de vossa cólera.
