1 And the word of the Lord was maad to Jonas,
1 E veio a palavra do SENHOR a Jonas, filho de Amitai, dizendo:
2 sone of Amathi, and seide, Rise thou, and go in to Nynyue, the greet citee, and preche thou ther ynne, for the malice therof stieth vp bifore me.
2 Levanta-te, vai à grande cidade de Nínive, e clama contra ela, porque a sua malícia subiu até à minha presença.
3 And Jonas roos for to fle in to Tharsis, fro the face of the Lord. And he cam doun to Joppe, and foond a schip goynge in to Tharsis, and he yaf schip hire to hem; and he wente doun in to it, for to go with hem in to Tharsis, fro the face of the Lord.
3 Porém, Jonas se levantou para fugir da presença do Senhor para Társis. E descendo a Jope, achou um navio que ia para Társis; pagou, pois, a sua passagem, e desceu para dentro dele, para ir com eles para Társis, para longe da presença do Senhor.
4 Forsothe the Lord sente a greet wynd in the see, and a greet tempest was maad in the see, and the schip was in perel for to be al to-brokun.
4 Mas o Senhor mandou ao mar um grande vento, e fez-se no mar uma forte tempestade, e o navio estava a ponto de quebrar-se.
5 And schip men dredden, and men crieden to her god; and senten vessels, that weren in the schip, in to the see, that it were maad liytere of hem. And Jonas wente doun in to the ynnere thingis of the schip, and slepte bi a greuouse sleep.
5 Então temeram os marinheiros, e clamavam cada um ao seu deus, e lançaram ao mar as cargas, que estavam no navio, para o aliviarem do seu peso; Jonas, porém, desceu ao porão do navio, e, tendo-se deitado, dormia um profundo sono.
6 And the gouernour cam to him, and seide to hym, Whi art thou cast doun in sleep? rise thou, clepe thi God to help, if perauenture God ayenthenke of vs, and we perische not.
6 E o mestre do navio chegou- se a ele, e disse-lhe: Que tens, dorminhoco? Levanta-te, clama ao teu Deus; talvez assim ele se lembre de nós para que não pereçamos.
7 And a man seide to his felowe, Come ye, and caste we lottis, and wite we, whi this yuel is to vs. And thei kesten lottis, and lot felle on Jonas.
7 E diziam cada um ao seu companheiro: Vinde, e lancemos sortes, para que saibamos por que causa nos sobreveio este mal. E lançaram sortes, e a sorte caiu sobre Jonas.
8 And thei seiden to hym, Schewe thou to vs, for cause of what thing this yuel is to vs; what is thi werk, which is thi lond, and whidur goist thou, ether of what puple art thou?
8 Então lhe disseram: Declara-nos tu agora, por causa de quem nos sobreveio este mal. Que ocupação é a tua? Donde vens? Qual é a tua terra? E de que povo és tu?
9 And he seide to hem, Y am an Ebrew, and Y drede the Lord God of heuene, that made the see and the drie lond.
9 E ele lhes disse: Eu sou hebreu, e temo ao Senhor, o Deus do céu, que fez o mar e a terra seca.
10 And the men dredden with greet drede, and seiden to him, Whi didist thou this thing? for the men knewen that he flei fro the face of the Lord, for Jonas hadde schewide to hem.
10 Então estes homens se enche-ram de grande temor, e disseram-lhe: Por que fizeste tu isto? Pois sabiam os homens que fugia da presença do Senhor, porque ele lho tinha declarado.
11 And thei seiden to hym, What schulen we do to thee, and the see schal seesse fro vs? for the see wente, and wexe greet on hem.
11 E disseram-lhe: Que te faremos nós, para que o mar se nos acalme? Porque o mar ia se tornando cada vez mais tempestuoso.
12 And he seide to hem, Take ye me, and throwe in to the see, and the see schal ceesse fro you; for Y woot, that for me this greet tempest is on you.
12 E ele lhes disse: Levantai-me, e lançai-me ao mar, e o mar se vos aquietará; porque eu sei que por minha causa vos sobreveio esta grande tempestade.
13 And men rowiden, for to turne ayen to the drie lond, and thei miyten not, for the see wente, and wexe greet on hem.
13 Entretanto, os homens remavam, para fazer voltar o navio à terra, mas não podiam, porquanto o mar se ia embravecendo cada vez mais contra eles.
14 And thei crieden to the Lord, and seiden, Lord, we bisechen, that we perische not in the lijf of this man, and that thou yyue not on vs innocent blood; for thou, Lord, didist as thou woldist.
14 Então clamaram ao Senhor, e disseram: Ah, Senhor! Nós te rogamos, que não pereçamos por causa da alma deste homem, e que não ponhas sobre nós o sangue inocente; porque tu, Senhor, fizeste como te aprouve.
15 And thei token Jonas, and threwen in to the see; and the see stood of his buylyng.
15 E levantaram a Jonas, e o lançaram ao mar, e cessou o mar da sua fúria.
16 And the men dredden the Lord with greet drede, and offriden oostis to the Lord, and vowiden avowis.
16 Temeram, pois, estes homens ao Senhor com grande temor; e ofereceram sacrifício ao Senhor, e fizeram votos.
17 — ausente —
17 Preparou, pois, o Senhor um grande peixe, para que tragasse a Jonas; e esteve Jonas três dias e três noites nas entranhas do peixe.
