1 Haue thou mynde on thi creatour in the daies of thi yongthe, bifore that the tyme of thi turment come, and the yeris of thi deth neiye, of whiche thou schalt seie, Tho plesen not me.
1 Lembre do seu Criador enquanto você ainda é jovem, antes que venham os dias maus e cheguem os anos em que você dirá: “Não tenho mais prazer na vida.”
2 `Haue thou mynde on thi creatour, bifor that the sunne be derk, and the liyt, and sterrys, and the mone; and cloude turne ayen after reyn.
2 Lembre dele antes que chegue o tempo em que você achará que a luz do sol, da lua e das estrelas perdeu o seu brilho e que as nuvens de chuva nunca vão embora.
3 Whanne the keperis of the hous schulen be mouyd, and strongeste men schulen tremble; and grynderis schulen be idel, whanne the noumbre schal be maad lesse, and seeris bi the hoolis schulen wexe derk;
3 Então os seus braços, que sempre o defenderam, começarão a tremer, e as suas pernas, que agora são fortes, ficarão fracas. Os seus dentes cairão, e sobrarão tão poucos, que você não conseguirá mastigar a sua comida. A sua vista ficará tão fraca, que você não poderá mais ver as coisas claramente.
4 and schulen close the doris in the street, in the lownesse of vois of a gryndere; and thei schulen rise at the vois of a brid, and alle the douytris of song schulen wexe deef.
4 Você ficará surdo e não poderá ouvir o barulho da rua. Você quase não conseguirá ouvir o moinho moendo ou a música tocando. E levantará cedo, quando os passarinhos começam a cantar.
5 And hiy thingis schulen drede, and schulen be aferd in the weie; an alemaunde tre schal floure, a locuste schal be maad fat, and capparis schal be distried; for a man schal go in to the hous of his euerlastyngnesse, and weileris schulen go aboute in the street.
5 Então você terá medo de lugares altos, e até caminhar será perigoso. Os seus cabelos ficarão brancos, e você perderá o gosto pelas coisas. Nós estaremos caminhando para o nosso último descanso; e, quando isso acontecer, haverá gente chorando por nossa causa nas ruas.
6 Haue thou mynde on thi creatour, byfore that a siluerne roop be brokun, and a goldun lace renne ayen, and a watir pot be al to-brokun on the welle, and a wheele be brokun togidere on the cisterne;
6 A vida vai se acabar como uma lamparina de ouro cai e quebra, quando a sua corrente de prata se arrebenta, ou como um pote de barro se despedaça quando a corda do poço se parte.
7 and dust turne ayen in to his erthe, wherof it was, and the spirit turne ayen to God, that yaf it.
7 Então o nosso corpo voltará para o pó da terra, de onde veio, e o nosso espírito voltará para Deus, que o deu.
8 The vanyte of vanytees, seide Ecclesiastes, the vanyte of vanytees, and alle thingis ben vanyte.
8 É ilusão, é ilusão, diz o Sábio. Tudo é ilusão.
9 And whanne Ecclesiastes was moost wijs, he tauyte the puple, and he telde out the thingis whiche he dide,
9 O Sábio, usando o seu conhecimento, continuou a ensinar ao povo o que sabia. Ele estudou, examinou e pôs em ordem muitos provérbios.
10 and he souyte out wisdom, and made many parablis; he souyte profitable wordis, and he wroot moost riytful wordis, and ful of treuthe.
10 Procurou usar palavras agradáveis, e tudo o que escreveu é verdade.
11 The wordis of wise men ben as prickis, and as nailis fastned deepe, whiche ben youun of o scheepherde bi the counsels of maistris.
11 As palavras dos sábios são como pregos bem-pregados; são como as varas pontudas que os pastores usam para guiar as ovelhas. Essas palavras foram dadas por Deus, o único Pastor de todos nós.
12 My sone, seke thou no more than these; noon ende is to make many bookis, and ofte thenkyng is turment of fleisch.
12 Filho, há mais uma coisa que eu quero dizer: os livros sempre continuarão a ser escritos; estudar demais cansa a mente.
13 Alle we here togydere the ende of spekyng. Drede thou God, and kepe hise heestis; `that is to seie, ech man.
13 De tudo o que foi dito, a conclusão é esta: tema a Deus e obedeça aos seus mandamentos porque foi para isso que fomos criados.
14 God schal brynge alle thingis in to dom, that ben don; for ech thing don bi errour, whether it be good, ether yuel.
14 Nós teremos de prestar contas a Deus de tudo o que fizermos e até daquilo que fizermos em segredo, seja o bem ou o mal.
