1 But in tho daies, whanne the noumbre of disciplis encreesside, the Grekis grutchiden ayens the Ebrews, for that her widewis weren dispisid in euery daies mynystryng.
1 À medida que o número de discípulos crescia, surgiam murmúrios de descontentamento. Os judeus de fala grega se queixavam dos de fala hebraica, dizendo que suas viúvas estavam sendo negligenciadas na distribuição diária de alimento.
2 And the twelue clepiden togidere the multitude of disciplis, and seiden, It is not ryytful, that we leeuen the word of God, and mynystren to boordis.
2 Por isso, os Doze convocaram uma reunião com todos os discípulos e disseram: “Nós, apóstolos, devemos nos dedicar ao ensino da palavra de Deus, e não à distribuição de alimentos.
3 Therfor, britheren, biholde ye men of you of good fame, ful of the Hooli Goost and of wisdom, whiche we schulen ordeyne on this werk;
3 Sendo assim, irmãos, escolham sete homens respeitados, cheios do Espírito e de sabedoria, e nós os encarregaremos desse serviço.
4 for we schulen be bisi to preier, and preche the word of God.
4 Então nós nos dedicaremos à oração e ao ensino da palavra”.
5 And the word pleside bifor al the multitude; and thei chesiden Styuen, a man ful of feith and of the Hooli Goost, and Filip, and Procore, and Nycanor, and Tymon, and Parmanam, and Nycol, a comelyng, a man of Antioche.
5 A ideia agradou a todos, e escolheram Estêvão, homem cheio de fé e do Espírito Santo, e também Filipe, Prócoro, Nicanor, Timom, Pármenas e Nicolau de Antioquia, que antes havia se convertido ao judaísmo.
6 Thei ordeyneden these bifor the siyt of apostlis, and thei preyeden, and leiden hoondis on hem.
6 Esses sete foram apresentados aos apóstolos, que oraram por eles e lhes impuseram as mãos.
7 And the word of the Lord wexide, and the noumbre of the disciplis in Jerusalem was myche multiplied; also myche cumpany of preestis obeiede to the feith.
7 Assim, a mensagem de Deus continuou a se espalhar. O número de discípulos se multiplicava em Jerusalém, e muitos sacerdotes também se converteram.
8 And Steuen, ful of grace and of strengthe, made wondris and grete signes in the puple.
8 Estêvão, homem cheio de graça e poder, realizava milagres e sinais entre o povo.
9 But summe rysen of the synagoge, that was clepid of Libertyns, and Cirenensis, and of men of Alisaundre, and of hem that weren of Cilice and of Asie, and disputiden with Steuene.
9 Um dia, porém, alguns homens da chamada Sinagoga dos Escravos Libertos começaram a discutir com ele. Eram judeus de Cirene, de Alexandria, da Cilícia e da província da Ásia.
10 And thei miyten not withstonde the wisdom and the spirit, that spak.
10 Nenhum deles era capaz de resistir à sabedoria e ao Espírito pelo qual Estêvão falava.
11 Thanne thei priueli senten men, that schulden seie, that thei herden hym seiynge wordis of blasfemye ayens Moises and God.
11 Então convenceram alguns homens a mentir a respeito dele, dizendo: “Ouvimos Estêvão blasfemar contra Moisés, e até contra Deus”.
12 And so thei moueden togidere the puple, and the eldre men, and the scribis; and thei rannen togidre, and token hym, and brouyten in to the counsel.
12 Com isso, agitaram o povo, os líderes religiosos e os mestres da lei, e Estêvão foi preso e levado ao conselho dos líderes do povo.
13 And thei ordeyneden false witnessis, that seiden, This man ceessith not to speke wordis ayens the hooli place, and the lawe.
13 As falsas testemunhas declararam: “Este homem vive falando contra o santo templo e a lei de Moisés.
14 For we herden hym seiynge, That this Jhesus of Nazareth schal destrye this place, and schal chaunge the tradiciouns, whiche Moyses bitook to us.
14 Nós o ouvimos dizer que esse Jesus de Nazaré destruirá o templo e mudará os costumes que Moisés nos deixou”.
15 And alle men that seten in the counsel bihelden hym, and sayn his face as the face of an aungel.
15 Nesse momento, todos os membros do conselho olharam para Estêvão e viram que seu rosto parecia o rosto de um anjo.
