1 And whanne thei hadden passid bi Amfipolis and Appollonye, thei camen to Thessolonyk, where was a synagoge of Jewis.
1 Então Paulo e Silas passaram pelas cidades de Anfípolis e Apolônia e chegaram a Tessalônica, onde havia uma sinagoga judaica.
2 And bi custom Poul entride to hem, and bi thre sabatis he declaride to hem of scripturis,
2 Como era seu costume, Paulo foi à sinagoga e, durante três sábados seguidos, discutiu as Escrituras com o povo.
3 and openyde, and schewide that it bihofte Crist to suffre, and rise ayen fro deth, and that this is Jhesus Crist, whom Y telle to you.
3 Explicou as profecias e provou que era necessário o Cristo sofrer e ressuscitar dos mortos. “Esse Jesus de que lhes falo é o Cristo”, disse ele.
4 And summe of hem bileueden, and weren ioyned to Poul and to Silas; and a greet multitude of hethene men worschipide God, and noble wymmen not a fewe.
4 Alguns dos judeus que o ouviam foram convencidos e se uniram a Paulo e Silas, bem como muitos gregos tementes a Deus e várias mulheres de alta posição.
5 But the Jewis hadden enuye, and token of the comyn puple summe yuele men, and whanne thei hadden maad a cumpenye, thei moueden the citee. And thei camen to Jasouns hous, and souyten hem to brynge forth among the puple.
5 Alguns judeus, porém, ficaram com inveja, reuniram alguns desordeiros e desocupados e, com a multidão, começaram um tumulto. Invadiram a casa de Jasom em busca de Paulo e Silas para entregá-los ao conselho da cidade,
6 And whanne thei founden hem not, thei drowen Jasoun and summe britheren to the princis of the citee, and crieden, That these it ben, that mouen the world, and hidir thei camen,
6 mas, como não os encontraram, arrastaram para fora Jasom e alguns outros irmãos e os levaram diante do conselho. Gritavam: “Aqueles que têm causado transtornos no mundo todo agora estão aqui, perturbando nossa cidade,
7 whiche Jason resseyuede. And these alle don ayens the maundementis of the emperour, and seien, that Jhesu is anothir king.
7 e Jasom os recebeu em sua casa! São todos culpados de traição contra César, pois afirmam que existe um outro rei, um tal de Jesus”.
8 And thei moueden the puple, and the princis of the citee, herynge these thingis.
8 Ao ouvir isso, o povo da cidade e o conselho se agitaram.
9 And whanne satisfaccioun was takun of Jason, and of othere, thei leten Poul and Silas go.
9 Então os oficiais obrigaram Jasom e os outros irmãos a pagarem fiança, e depois os soltaram.
10 And anoon bi niyt britheren leten Silas go in to Beroan. And whanne thei camen thidur, thei entriden in to the synagoge of the Jewis.
10 Ao anoitecer, os irmãos enviaram Paulo e Silas a Bereia. Quando lá chegaram, foram à sinagoga judaica.
11 But these weren the worthier of hem that ben at Thessolonik, whiche resseyueden the word with al desire, eche dai sekinge scripturis, if these thingis hadden hem so.
11 Os judeus que moravam em Bereia tinham a mente mais aberta que os de Tessalônica e ouviram a mensagem de Paulo com grande interesse. Todos os dias, examinavam as Escrituras para ver se Paulo e Silas ensinavam a verdade.
12 And manye of hem bileueden and of hethen wymmen onest and men not a fewe.
12 Como resultado, muitos judeus creram, assim como vários gregos de alta posição, tanto homens como mulheres.
13 But whanne the Jewis in Tessalonyk hadden knowe, that also at Bero the word of God was prechid of Poul, thei camen thidir, mouynge and disturblynge the multitude.
13 Mas, quando os judeus de Tessalônica souberam que Paulo estava pregando a palavra de Deus em Bereia, foram até lá e criaram um alvoroço.
14 And tho anoon britheren delyuerden Poul, that he schulde go to the see; but Sylas and Tymothe dwelten there.
14 Os irmãos agiram de imediato e enviaram Paulo para o litoral, enquanto Silas e Timóteo permaneceram na cidade.
15 And thei that ledden forth Poul, ledden hym to Atenes. And whanne thei hadden take maundement of him to Silas and to Tymothe, that ful hiyyngli thei schulden come to hym, thei wenten forth.
15 Os que acompanharam Paulo o levaram até Atenas e, depois, voltaram a Bereia com instruções para Silas e Timóteo irem ao encontro dele o mais depressa possível.
16 And while Poul abood hem at Atenys, his spirit was moued in him, for he saiy the citee youun to ydolatrie.
16 Enquanto Paulo esperava por eles em Atenas, ficou muito indignado ao ver ídolos por toda a cidade.
17 Therfor he disputide in the synagoge with the Jewis, and with men that worschipiden God, and in the dom place, by alle daies to hem that herden.
17 Por isso, ia à sinagoga debater com os judeus e com os gentios tementes a Deus e falava diariamente na praça pública a todos que ali estavam.
18 And summe Epeicureis, and Stoisens, and filosofris disputiden with hym. And summe seiden, What wole this sowere of wordis seie? And othere seiden, He semeth to be a tellere of newe fendis; for he telde to hem Jhesu, and the ayenrisyng.
18 Paulo também debateu com alguns dos filósofos epicureus e estoicos. Quando lhes falou de Jesus e da ressurreição, eles perguntaram: “O que esse tagarela está querendo dizer?”. Outros disseram: “Parece estar falando de deuses estrangeiros”.
19 And thei token, and ledden hym to Ariopage, and seide, Moun we wite, what is this newe doctryne, that is seid of thee?
19 Então levaram Paulo ao conselho da cidade e disseram: “Pode nos dizer que novo ensino é esse?
20 For thou bringist ynne summe newe thingis to oure eeris; therfor we wolen wite, what these thingis wolen be.
20 Você diz coisas um tanto estranhas, e queremos saber o que significam”.
21 For alle men of Athenys and comlingis herborid yauen tent to noon other thing, but ether to seie, ethir to here, sum newe thing.
21 (Convém explicar que os atenienses, bem como os estrangeiros que viviam em Atenas, pareciam não fazer outra coisa senão discutir as últimas novidades.)
22 And Poul stood in the myddil of Ariopage, and seide, Men of Athenys, bi alle thingis Y se you as veyn worschipers.
22 Então Paulo se levantou diante do conselho e assim se dirigiu a seus membros: “Homens de Atenas, vejo que em todos os aspectos vocês são muito religiosos,
23 For Y passide, and siy youre maumetis, and foond an auter, in which was writun, To the vnknowun God. Therfor which thing ye vnknowynge worschipen, this thing Y schew to you.
23 pois, enquanto andava pela cidade, reparei em seus diversos altares. Um deles trazia a seguinte inscrição: ‘Ao Deus Desconhecido’. Esse Deus que vocês adoram sem conhecer é exatamente aquele de que lhes falo.
24 God that made the world and alle thingis that ben in it, this, for he is Lord of heuene and of erthe, dwellith not in templis maad with hoond,
24 “Ele é o Deus que fez o mundo e tudo que nele há. Uma vez que é Senhor dos céus e da terra, não habita em templos feitos por homens
25 nethir is worschipid bi mannus hoondis, nether hath nede of ony thing, for he yyueth lijf to alle men, and brethinge, and alle thingis;
25 e não é servido por mãos humanas, pois não necessita de coisa alguma. Ele mesmo dá vida e fôlego a tudo, e supre cada necessidade.
26 and made of oon al the kinde of men to enhabite on al the face of the erthe, determynynge tymes ordeyned, and termes of the dwellynge of hem,
26 De um só homem ele criou todas as nações da terra, tendo decidido de antemão onde se estabeleceriam e por quanto tempo.
27 to seke God, if perauenture thei felen hym, ether fynden, thouy he be not fer fro eche of you.
27 “Seu propósito era que as nações buscassem a Deus e, tateando, talvez viessem a encontrá-lo, embora ele não esteja longe de nenhum de nós.
28 For in hym we lyuen, and mouen, and ben. As also summe of youre poetis seiden, And we ben also the kynde of hym.
28 Pois nele vivemos, nos movemos e existimos. Como disseram alguns de seus próprios poetas: ‘Somos descendência dele’.
29 Therfor sithen we ben the kynde of God, we schulen not deme, that godli thing is lijk gold, and siluer, ethir stoon, ethir to grauyng of craft and thouyt of man.
29 E, por ser isso verdade, não devemos imaginar Deus como um ídolo de ouro, prata ou pedra, projetado por artesãos.
30 For God dispisith the tymes of this vnkunnyng, and now schewith to men, that alle euery where doon penaunce; for that he hath ordeyned a dai,
30 “No passado, Deus não levou em conta a ignorância das pessoas acerca dessas coisas, mas agora ele ordena que todos, em todo lugar, se arrependam.
31 in which he schal deme the world in equite, in a man in which he ordeynede, and yaf feith to alle men, and reiside hym fro deth.
31 Pois ele estabeleceu um dia para julgar o mundo com justiça, por meio do homem que ele designou, e mostrou a todos quem é esse homem ao ressuscitá-lo dos mortos”.
32 And whanne thei hadden herd the ayenrysing of deed men, summe scorneden, and summe seiden, We schulen here thee eft of this thing.
32 Quando ouviram Paulo falar da ressurreição dos mortos, alguns riram com desprezo. Outros, porém, disseram: “Queremos ouvir mais sobre isso em outra ocasião”.
33 So Poul wente out of the myddil of hem.
33 Então Paulo se retirou do conselho,
34 But summen drowen to hym, and bileueden. Among whiche Dynyse Aropagite was, and a womman, bi name Damaris, and othere men with hem.
34 mas alguns se juntaram a ele e creram. Entre eles estavam Dionísio, membro do conselho, uma mulher chamada Dâmaris, e alguns outros.
