1 Wherof ben batelis and cheestis among you? Whether not of youre coueitisis, that fiyten in youre membris?
1 De onde procedem as guerras e brigas que há entre vocês? De onde, senão dos prazeres que estão em conflito dentro de vocês?
2 Ye coueiten, and ye han not; ye sleen, and ye han enuye, and ye moun not gete. Ye chiden, and maken batel; and ye han not, for ye axen not.
2 Vocês cobiçam e nada têm; matam e sentem inveja, mas nada podem obter; vivem a lutar e a fazer guerras. Nada têm, porque não pedem;
3 Ye axen, and ye resseyuen not; for that ye axen yuele, as ye schewen opynli in youre coueitisis.
3 pedem e não recebem, porque pedem mal, para esbanjarem em seus prazeres.
4 Auowtreris, witen not ye, that the frenschip of this world is enemye to God? Therfor who euere wole be frend of this world, is maad the enemye of God.
4 Gente infiel! Vocês não sabem que a amizade do mundo é inimizade contra Deus? Aquele, pois, que quiser ser amigo do mundo se torna inimigo de Deus.
5 Whether ye gessen, that the scripture seith veynli, The spirit that dwellith in you, coueitith to enuye?
5 Ou vocês pensam que é em vão que a Escritura diz: “É com ciúme que por nós anseia o Espírito, que ele fez habitar em nós?”
6 But he yyueth the more grace; for which thing he seith, God withstondith proude men, but to meke men he yyueth grace.
6 Mas ele nos dá cada vez mais graça. Por isso diz: “Deus resiste aos soberbos, mas dá graça aos humildes.”
7 Therfor be ye suget to God; but withstonde ye the deuel, and he schal fle fro you.
7 Portanto, sujeitem-se a Deus, mas resistam ao diabo, e ele fugirá de vocês.
8 Neiye ye to God, and he schal neiye to you. Ye synneris, clense ye hondis, and ye double in soule, purge ye the hertis.
8 Cheguem perto de Deus, e ele se chegará a vocês. Limpem as mãos, pecadores! E vocês que são indecisos, purifiquem o coração.
9 Be ye wretchis, and weile ye; youre leiyyng be turned in to weping, and ioye in to sorewe of herte.
9 Reconheçam a sua miséria, lamentem e chorem. Que o riso de vocês se transforme em pranto, e que a alegria de vocês se transforme em tristeza.
10 Be ye mekid in the siyt of the Lord, and he schal enhaunse you.
10 Humilhem-se diante do Senhor, e ele os exaltará.
11 My britheren, nyle ye bacbite ech othere. He that bacbitith his brothir, ethir that demeth his brothir, bacbitith the lawe, and demeth the lawe. And if thou demest the lawe, thou art not a doere of the lawe, but a domesman.
11 Irmãos, não falem mal uns dos outros. Aquele que fala mal do irmão ou julga o seu irmão fala mal da lei e julga a lei; ora, se você julga a lei, não é observador da lei, mas juiz.
12 But oon is makere of the lawe, and iuge, that may lese, and delyuere.
12 Um só é Legislador e Juiz, aquele que pode salvar e fazer perecer. Mas quem é você para julgar o seu próximo?
13 And who art thou, that demest thi neiybore? Lo! now ye, that seien, To dai ethir to morewe we schulen go in to thilke citee, and there we schulen dwelle a yeer, and we schulen make marchaundise, and we schulen make wynning;
13 Escutem, agora, vocês que dizem: “Hoje ou amanhã, iremos para a cidade tal, e lá passaremos um ano, e faremos negócios, e teremos lucros.”
14 whiche witen not, what is to you in the morewe.
14 Vocês não sabem o que acontecerá amanhã. O que é a vida de vocês? Vocês não passam de neblina que aparece por um instante e logo se dissipa.
15 For what is youre lijf? A smoke apperinge at a litil, and aftirward it schal be wastid. Therfor that ye seie, If the Lord wole, and if we liuen, we schulen do this thing, ether that thing.
15 Em vez disso, deveriam dizer: “Se Deus quiser, não só viveremos, como também faremos isto ou aquilo.”
16 And now ye maken ful out ioye in youre pridis; euery siche ioye is wickyd.
16 Agora, entretanto, vocês se orgulham das suas arrogantes pretensões. Todo orgulho semelhante a esse é mau.
17 Therfor it is synne to hym, that kan do good, and doith not.
17 Portanto, aquele que sabe que deve fazer o bem e não o faz, nisso está pecando.
